Dad

My father died last Saturday. This was both expected and not. He had been diagnosed with a slow growing form of cancer which tended to metastasize back in 2004. He had surgery in 2006 to remove a tumor from his lungs, and another procedure in 2...

Millions of Strawberries

Marcia and I went over the curve,
Eating our way down
Jewels of strawberries we didn't deserve,
Eating our way down.
Till our hands were sticky, and our lips painted,
And over us the hot day fai...

Yesterday I was looking for my friend Lissa’s husband Jay on-line. UCSD had just hired someone who might have been his dissertation advisor (a Chaucer scholar from Stanford), but I couldn’t remember Jay’s last name. When I could...

Two hours start to finish.
I woke up at 2:15 with a gush of fluids. I hadn’t change positions or coughed or done anything else to precipitate the flow. I got up, put on my bathrobe, went to the toilet in our bathroom. Thought a bit more and changed to the hall bathroom where I felt more comfortable closing the door and turning on the light. It felt less like I might wake Tom up in that bathro...

He had surgery in 2006 to remove a tumor from his lungs, and another procedure in 2007 for a tumor in his brain. He had recently completed radiation treatment for growths on his collarbone and his femur. We thought we were out of the woods; he would rest up and we would go visit in August. Instead, he felt very weak, and, on Tue...

Till our hands were sticky, and our lips painted,
And over us the hot day fainted,
And we saw snakes,
And got scratched, and a lust overcame us for the red
unmatched
Small buds of berries, till we lay down--
Eating out way down-- and rolled in the berries like two
little dogs
Rolled
In the late gold
And gnats hummed

Yesterday I was looking for my friend Lissa’s husband Jay on-line. UCSD had just hired someone who might have been his dissertation advisor (a Chaucer scholar from Stanford), but I couldn’t remember Jay’s last name. When I couldn’t find him at his last known (to me) institutional affiliation, IU, South Bend and was unsuccessful with the search terms “Chaucer” “Piers Plowman” and “Jay” I tried the terms “Lissa Hunt” and “Jay.”
What I found did provide me with Jay’s last ...

I love Gaia very much. From the start, she always has made me feel comfortable to be myself. Her intelligence is intense, but yet so down to earth. She is also one of the best mothers I have seen in action. If you haven't seen her in action with Freejammin, watch her sometime. she describes and teaches him in a way any preschool teacher would be proud of. Just constantly talking to Freejammin about life and his environment. It really is such a beautiful sight.

This woman is my life partner and the mother of our magnificent child. So, if you know her, you see that I am extremely fortunate. But so are you, if you get to know her and she smiles at you the way she smiles. She is one of the gentlest, friendliest people I have ever met, and she is very likely the best mother anyone could have (just ask FreeJammin' about the latter!). At the same time, she can be sharply critical because she's (1) very observant, (2) articulate as all getout, and (3) concerned that the people around her create the best possible world. Her knowledge of many realms is encyclopedic, and she is better than anyone I know at connecting people with similar interests and at knowing what person what source of information should intersect with someone. She also keen to the sensual pleasures, and really knows how to enjoy life!!!! (Yum!!!!) She makes a great beer recipe too, and is so at-home cooking or brewing beer that she clearly could have made a career as a lab scientist. In addition she has a sharp scientific mind, yet she's not limited to scientific ways of knowing. She's about as smart as anybody you'll ever meet. All that and she lets me be me. I'm so so lucky that she's good at relationships, too; we've made it through some pretty rough spots and we're still together--and having a great time too!
So, you see, we're all extremely fortunate for this Gift of LIfe.

Gaia is a loving, caring, and understanding person. I've always had a strong connection with her and I love her like the sister I never had. When I need someone to talk me down, she teaches me patience.

Gaia
Spend time with this woman
she will slow you down
she will hand you a beer if you drink then she will tell you the why, when and where it was made
she accepts whatever you are. into. or what you are thinking at the moment if it is positive it is all good with this woman
then she looks into your eyes and make you feel like you are the most amazing person on earth
the best part is her best friends her husband and son
