Re: Tang Dynasty Classical Chinese Dance Workshop, Savannah, GA - Sat. Dec. 5th. (in Chinese History) Sadly almost all of the tribes that I take an interest in seem to be moribund. :-)

My research is in English history, Yoyo, but I take an interest in a much wider area. Yes, I am interested in the Tang dynasty also though the seminars I took ... read more

Re: Baba Yaga (in Dark Goddesses) Just the stories I read as a child. I think I have all of the main details here but if I discover more I'll let you know.

"Public Enemies", directed with considerable panache by Michael Mann, tells the story-or part of the story-of John Dillinger, a bank-robber of Depression-era America, so notorious that he was labelled ‘public enemy number one’ by J. Edgar Hoover, then director of the emerging FBI. Johnny Depp does a first class job in bringing Dillinger to life as the perfect American anti-hero without, it seems to me, drawing on ‘tough guy’ or gangster stereotypes. Dillinger himself turned into a sort of f... read more

Christmas Day, the 25th of December, the day that Jesus was born in a manger, is it not? Well, actually, no, it isn’t. The Gospels make no mention of the day, or the time of year, when Christ entered the world. It was centuries after his death that the Church alighted on 25 December.

And why that specific date? For the simple reason that the church was adept at grafting its own feast days on to pre-existing pagan holidays. Late December was the very height of the Roman holiday, the time of... read more

I love film noir and Body Heat, starring William Hurt and Kathleen Turner, is one of the best movies in this genre. Made as long ago as 1981, Turner plays Matty Walker, a ruthlessly ambitious woman, a femme fatale in the most complete sense. A married woman, she becomes sexually involved with Hurt, who plays Ned Racine, a small-time lawyer. Their original meeting seems entirely coincidental but, bit by bit, as the story unravels, it becomes clear that Matty has deliberately chosen Racine i... read more

Nothing really ever happens in isolation but as part of a sequence. I must say that the continuing obsession with 2012 and the coming Armageddon continues to cause me lots of impish amusement, as if this eagerly anticipated event, and, yes, some do seem to anticipate it eagerly, is of seminal significance, a case sui generis. That’s rubbish of course, as anyone who has any knowledge of the currents and eddies of history will tell you. I’ve already written about Asahara but let me pilot yo... read more

Here below is a response that I wrote to a question on one of the social networks I belong to. I'm recording it here as well as on my Ana the Imp page on Blogger.

OK, I really don’t want to comment on the particular issues you have raised about Saddam’s rule in Iraq, or his attributes as a father (though you might want to check how Uday, the eldest son, turned out), and I certainly don’t want to say anything about American domestic politics!

In fact I’m going to sidestep your specif... read more
