Here's the second CD, with the music mostly influenced by the Middle East, India and Afghanistan.
Look on CD Baby! It should be there.

The second "David Brown and the Krewe of Sound" CD is now finished and off to CD Baby for launching online. This one,
Folksongs From an Imaginary Land" features rock with Middle Eastern and Afghan-Indian influences. It also has a few old cuts that were in the can for years, one done during the making of Tameem's CD, and the other intended for a DVD project that never went anywhere.
We are continuing to record, as we still have a lot of material still left plus what I am now writing. I don't think the next CD will be out for a while, though, after this flurry of activity.

Saturday I'm off to master the next CD; this one will made up of some older tracks and new ones, all sharing Middle Eastern/Central Asian/Indian influences.
There is still material in the can for the 3rd CD, and more being recorded. I've been upgrading the drum and bass sounds a bit in the studio, too.
We've been doing a lot of the instrumentals, so the next batch of stuff should include more songs. I want to redo a couple old ones and a bunch of new ones.

Well we finished deciding on what cuts to use and in what order last Saturday night for the first CD of the new music. 14 tunes, app. 66 minutes, with a variety of styles and even a couple of vocals!

My wife Barbara played drums, percussion, keyboards, and vocal; Jack Braet played clarinet, soprano, alto and tenor sax; I played electric, acoustic and steel guitar, electric bass, keyboards, vocal, wrote, arranged and was producer/engineer.

Now we needs: to master it, replicate it, get the artwork, decide on a name, etc. all the hard stuff, the music is the easy part.
I'm going to begin work on the next CD soon, I still have about 40 pieces not finished and am writing more all the time.

So it's Feb 2009, and as the dust settles I am a reborn guitarist; I've sort of lost my obsession for all things world music related and have reverted to true form as a rock guitar player....bass and keys too. I have been putting all of my attention into my own original music and am much the happier for it.
Many years ago Dariush Sami told me that I should play fewer instruments and use my knowledge to write new music. It took a number of years for me to catch up, but that is where I am now. I find that what I learned from all the other musics of the world has influenced me, but I can no longer try to "color in the lines" as opposed to doing what I want.
Plus I don't have to take care of this ridiculous instrument collection any more, just keep my guitars and such in shape.
Hey, want to buy a slightly used ney?

After July 4, new tribe

The local dancers entered the Mendocino 4th of July parade, and I dusted off the mizmar and marched with them. Lots of fun, and one reed worked the whole parade. That's a big deal to mizmar player!
I was a bit apprehensive to parade on the 4th with a Middle Eastern group, but we had signs about peace in the ME, and we were very well received!
I also started a new tribe, http://tribes.tribe.net/mizmarzurna - mostly to share info, particularly after reading an older thread on mizmar and sort of being challenged by Elliot's comments on how few American he thinks play mizmar or zurna decently. So it's time to share our knowledge and do what the other musicians and dancers have done over the years, upgrade our abilities!

I just got back from Kosmos Camp, and had a wonderful time. I had a chance to start a New Orleans Jazz workshop, and had a better turnout than expected. Plus, I got to play with many great musicians, and had a chance to do a Jazz performance with Liam Furey and Kim Atkinson. Later I joined Antonia and Yorgos to play for Greek dancing, played flute with the salsa band, and rebaba and buzuq with Faisal, Elliot and Hector for the Arabic dance set.
Now I'm trying to get as much work done as possible before Lark.
