My Testimonials

July 10, 2007
Helena is one of my idols and mentors. If I could dance like anybody in Arizona, I would choose her. But it isn't because of her dancing (which is great), but the aura she sends forth at all times. She is in charge of herself, vibrant with great energy, and is a person you want to look up to. Her dancing always sends this message to me. She is truly first lady of belly dance in Arizona we are blessed to have her in our community.

Long before I met Helena (which was 25 years ago) I heard stories of the legendary lady. Somethimes when you build up your expectations of something you are often disappointed with the real thing, but NOT so with Helena. She absolutely cannot disappoint. Her achievements on stage are unparalleled. I have never known a dancer to have wider audiance appeal. We are all dazzled by her stage persona but what really impresses me is her never compromised unselfishness and helpfurness to all in the dance community. No matter what you ask of her she is there. Thanks for everything.

Helena is the epitome of grace and stature. she is elegant, regal and rich in carriage. when she floats into a room, you know the energy has just shifted. my student troupe is full of new dancers and young dancers. even with their untrained eyes, they have commented on "that lady" b/c even if you dont know who she is, you know she is SOMEONE!

Helena is the First Lady of Bellydancing! She is regal, beautiful, and embodies a timeless grace. She inspires all who are fortunate to see her in action. Watching her makes me want to be a better dancer.

The dictionary has thousands of words.
One of them describes Helena: ethereal.
She makes my eyes water. She is just that good.

HELENA VLAHOS
Sometimes our best ideas are born when we least expect it. Helena relates that just such an occasion gave rise to the act that put her into the Guinness Book of World Records and earned her quite a bit more than Mr. Warhol's touted 15 minutes of fame. The famous act involves first flipping a dollar bill in the crease of her belly. Then she proceeds to lay out a row of nine quarters across her tummy just below her navel. Using her belly muscles, she flips the quarters; twice up and down, one at a time, and finally every other one at a time! When asked how this came about, Helena takes us back to a performance in 1968 at the People Tree in Calabasas, California.
Since Helena had taught herself to perform belly rolls while reclining with her arms propping her up, she incorporated the position into the belly roll segment of her act. Naturally, appreciative patrons would shower her with tips as she performed. Then on this particular night, a customer placed a bill right where it caught perfectly in her belly fold, causing the note to flip neatly over. The crowd went wild! Helena realized that here was something really unique she could add to her show. With her typical determined attitude, she began to practice the act in her spare time. At first she worked only with the bill, but then thought, why not give coins a try. After experimenting with various coins, she settled on quarters as working the best for her. Years of persistence finally led to her mastery of an incredible nine coin row, a feat that hasn't been matched since.
