I've endured the emergence of the electronic scenes on 7 continents,worldwide.In a constantly moving flux,from New York to New Zealand,spanning 78 countries in 18 yr's,of which,36+ nations have provided the backdrop to developing the impetus/grass-roots stages of various "soundsystem"(s).Festivals,raves,free-parties,protests,collective arts conventions,anniversary/annual gatherings,and new,inventive,hybrid methods of installation/presentation.Designating to develop and improve standards of presentation and execution for forward-thinking,active,visable,and ever-changing collectives.From backrooms to blissful beaches:this nomadecy resulted in co-operating at all levels of fully mobile & adaptable,multi-technical "soundsystem"(s):with various members inter-changing between,betwixt,above & beyond the limits of resposibility,and the call of duty.Plus,facing the sheer amount of flux us as we toured accross aforementioned nations and continents.

Thusly,I have become quite adept at inter-mingling,these various roles & reponsibilities:and ,although,they are known roles for entertainment production everywhere,.............the "soundsystem"s' definitive rules bend and transmography into a feeling,completely inate to this position,unlike a touring band or group.It really needs to include what trials and tribulations can amount when trying to work with no bounds on arenas:from numbers of 100 thru to1.6 million,at every stage along this wonderful journey-it's been a very special priviledge and pleasure at every turn. Due to an overall theory;............................ "shake well,serve chilled".



**Dj/DAT/CDJ DJ SETS/MIXES:This entails the co-production of multi-layered,well-syncopated music & atmosphere,by use of everything from D.igital A.udio T.apes,Cd's,or records to provide a useful function for the sound crew,on which they can base,lights,interactive visuals,etc.Usuually done in 1-3 hr. "sets",it's not unusual,upon request & motivation,by both crew & patrons for any given party or festival-to continue for as long as the people reamain in motion,or the power source is dissipated.Always an inventive mix,and always a great translator/de-coder for the feeling amongst the crowd.This effort has to be flexible,and imaginative enough to hold the feeling of the event,and convey the various stages of the evening/to/morning transitions.

**PROGRAMMIN/EDITING TECH.,SOUND ASST:Usually done on-site by the professional(s),who concentrate primarliy on capturing the sights,& sound of the given event,by recording(s),or video-enhanced tape logues to mix down at a later date,in studio conditions.Technically demandiing,it also makes for a focus for carefully maintaing a solid ear & attention to changing levels in or around the various equiptment of choice.I've usually been given only a small,less crucial portion of this effort.as years of skill & dedication usually result in second-to-none-results.Again,the primary result & pre-cursors to this position have been my areas.And the assistance with the execution of it.


**DECOR/STAGE DESIGN:This position entails the sizing,blue-printing,framing,and construction of staging for everything from dance platforms,to framework to be used for technical areas & equiptment protection,right back to float/mobile designs for festivals and parades.It makes it all seem "painfully uphill" during the blueprinting/concept stages due to the stipulation towards fitting within safety codes,and bulk product(s) being delivered onsite.Not until the final crew-mangement get a look at the finshed product(s) does it bear any form of rewards.As the bar,club,or festival site takes shape and realizes it's new form.It involves mostly hands-on cutting,sizing,joining & fiitting,painting & texturing,finishing,and glazing.All manner of drop cloth/backdrops to projection screens,and the multi-transitions with lighting effects are co-ordinated with the other pockets of technicians involved with a fluid execution. Due to ther nature of average time-constraints,and the effects of changing weather conditions(when executing outdoor performances @ festival grounds)+ utilizing a mobile creation unit,or mobil-craftshop,between venues & festivals(usually doubling as accomodation for the rest of the crew...)It tends to border on quite tedious conditions,pressured by every changing moment,and on-site visitor or phone/txt communications.It demands having a good sense of time commitment and utilizing crew co-ordination to the utmost,as well as a immessurable amount of patience and adaptation skills.Costume design & Stage Dancing:One of the least rewarding and obviously exhausting positions ,both mentally & phyically,it makes the stage applications a design reality.And catapults said crew-member into a very obviously trying position,after working at other positions during the day,or week(s),before the event.As a motivator to,sometimes,VERY cold crowds,and motionless attendees-the result can be an attention-grabbing leader & benevolent liason of all things groovy-OR-sinking into a desire for a trap-door on the stage.Costumes are usually in consultation with the lighting tech.,and visual artist(s)when utilizing stage-transitions throughout the performance,and made to be moved in.Again,safety is paramount:so alot of the best ideas can be made,but,in the end ,.....made sadly unusable by a pilythora of reasons;from alergic reactions to materials,excruciating pain caused by surface contact,binding & friction,fire-retardency,right back to revieling circumctances.Ultraviolet transitions are my favorite due to versatily and range of application(s).Stage-dancing has seemed to "come with the territory" when visiting festivals & larger parades where participation on floats becomes neccesary;always good for a laugh & a giggle.


**INSTALLATION TECH./ASST.:Again,can entail all sort of connecting,supporting,hanging,giu-wiring,securing:all depending on the desired installation chosen.Sometimes alligned to the theme of the party or festival,or any number of tangents: based alot on the materials at-hand.As the"inter-active"level,is always just a moment away,depending on the zeal of the crowd,and sometimes the ignorance of security-"I never meant to harm the installation"scenarios abound,..............so,last minute-reparations are common.Sometimes,the integrity of the artists vision may be compromised,and have the most unexpected results,.........perhaps,unexpectedly,to the betterment of the whole effort.Although,time connstraints and man-power are priorities,artistic merit is about utilizing function & adjoining it to the fashioning process,when encouraging participation.


**PROMOTIONS/PUBLIC REL's/PROM.MAN.:This position is crucial to the indexing stages of creating the basis for everything from a stable relationship with performers/artists,right back to delivering funding proposals?& bridging gaps in relationships with local & federal authorities.It can usually include scheduling and confirming touring plans,co-ordination,reservations and payments,tour vehicle operation(s) and maintenance,etc.The networking process can be slow & painfully arduous,and very demanding.Translating different dialects & languages,to simply addressing concerns of varying nature,reguarding terms of contracts,stipulations for single or troups/groups of performers.A healthy respect for "the point of fatigue" is neccesary when setting tour itinerarires,and timing/schedules for groups and counsels.Conffering on pressing issues,can really provide the difference between a solid production,or a mis-matched,ill-fated "comedy of errors",waiting to happen.Understanding,defining,and relating to these issues,is one thing-planning the strategies to overcoming the sheer diversity of problems,is another.This position also fills in the "empties"along the journey,door person,security,and babysitter are always on the job list.The promotion aspect has always been an avenue to transversing the public medium,by means of flyering,postering,and networking at lightspeed:to as many ears as will listen to advertising on the personal level(s).


**CHILL-OUT/CHAI SAVANNAH:This has provided the interum development to a rapid and successful angle for utilizing a wide-ranging career in the service industry:as a 2nd chef.The "chill-out cafe"and "chai-tent"(indian tea tent)environ have been a staple for of the aformentioned festival circuit and a interegal part of the thoroughfare to/from the sites.Concentrating on a slightly less rigerous music policy,these mobile locations provide a break from the demands of transition/migration to/from festivals,or a welcome guide thru crowded cities en route to larger performances.At times,in conjunction with local cafes & restaraunts:they also encourage communication on a slightly different medium than the events themselves.Crew togetherness/compatibility are usually welcome results,as well as a safe haven for families and younger participants,to take in forums & childrens entertainment.Placing,and designing conceptual"savanahs"en route has been an effective way of curtailling problems associated with commuting great distances to/from remote sites,and to/from cities along ajoining autoroutes/highways.It has also proven to be a useful tool in providing pre-festival maps/routing,& info,and co-operating with pressures from local authorities,to decrease environmental concerns/dangers,caused by extreme distances to festival locales.It has also helped by way of minimalizing risks,that may result,in marring the reputation/face of firms/collectives,and their realtionships with charity & non-profit organizations.In terms of "damage control",in general,100% success rate,overall.

**GENERAL PARTY DUTIES:In the early years,parties were parties,most were illigal and outlawed in one way or another?!,.........and there were no specific "positions" to fill.And as intoxication was a major key,far more than functionality or professionalism-this position definition is left open for you,the reader:to not only remember-in your own experience-what,this part,of the whole effort is all about:-also,......to give a picture of how the inter-changability and adaptability comes into the forefront of any "constructed" entertainment effort.The things usually forgotten until the last minute would have been at the forefront of duties:securing equiptment,electric/power sources,providing artistsic endevours,re-scheduling line-ups/transport,etc.Right across the board to the most crucial of demands;kicking-in warehouse doors,avoiding police sweeps,communicating locales/for fields & open yards,moving huge groups within city limits between clubs/after parties.Having a good sentimental journey..???
Taking "credit",for any of this period,isn't paramount,but,has bearing to my own meandering experience.Good "trail & error-experiments in terror/hit & miss" period,to learn from our,..........little mistakes.


**OVERVIEW The strength in our differences?? The,"collective experience",in all facets of festival production & execution are responsible for cohesing a good,tight network of possibilities,and solid realationships for future events.As well as a realized "circuit-board" for seasonal participation,for those on the move,and a successful method of ensuring each artist always has a opportunity to shine.Collaborating for natural events(i.e:solstice/equinox,eclipse,spiritual/esoteric dates...)also link & index international networks in a dual-hemispheric family,operating a seasonal grid-work of constant deployment of ability. As this is usually independent of the fettings of the"dance-industry"/agency agendas: these operatives are frowned upon by more established groups.
Usually,the high costs involved,make these performances/festivals inacceassable to lower-income families,aboriginal groups/travellers,and the disenfranchised.Operating outside these constraints provide this artistic network with added freedom & flexibility to compound the strength in adversity & difference. A lot of the pressures involved with presentations,right across the board-is the securing of possible venues & open-Areas.Presently,one of the methods employed by groups world-wide,is to involve focus and primary attention to the non-profit groups that stand to gain from backing these ventures.In turn,receiving added exposure to their needs,and a solid chance to state the definition of their efforts to a broader cross-section of the public.All in all-a successful effort for those who may,or may not,utilize this platform. This has made a perfect qualification/transformation point for travellers/nomads to not only involve art,music,and participation in the dulldrums of everyday life-but,transform and manifest "blueprints into footprints" for others to follow in the future.As the electronic torch will be carried by generations to come,but,current maintenance is in the hands of the under/overground of today.
"You can put out a candle,but,you can't put out a fire"-the more oxygen and preventive measures you take to extinguish it,only serves to give it more life and vigour,also........exposure.From a disco phenomenon of yesterday,to the proud history the international dance communtiy carries today:it has a very tribal root that will only grow & evolve wherever bi-peds are effected by alpha-frequencies' and drum beats? So be it..............
