I must say that was a beautiful harvest to an amazing summer of festivals for me. a homecoming from many years of travelling to pursue the most highest vibrations in music. On a high mountain ridge in the foothills of the sierra madres which Jerry Garcia and dead family used as a retreat, to a next-level eco-conscious trance gathering, I felt a real culmination of my path in the past 12 years as a music lover. The drive south from Canada along Oregon and California’s coastline to hear some of my favourite trance and downtempo producers really drove home many of the lessons that I have learned as I have been part of these gatherings for half of my lifetime.
At first I was not going to post anything about this trip, as my camera doesent work and I was just having a great time dancing, but after the hallucinogen in dub set, I had to tell you guys all about it. It was killer! They had a live band backing them up (guitar bass & drums) and simon was playing electric guitar and ott on the laptop and midi keyboard. Totally rockstar! Way better than any of their dj sets that I have heard them play, even if it was a little unrehearsed. They even busted into “she sells sanctuary” by the cult. Hilarious!
Basically, Symbiosis was the best third of Shambhala. For those of us who spend our time going between the beach, portal and seed stages, this was the party to be at. Beside a big hip-hop presence musically, there were all the quality aspects without the “ravey” element of shambles. 2500 people instead of 10000, with a very eco-conscious angle, diverse vegetarian vendor food, clean portalets and very little sketch factor in the audience. Some downsides to the site was the lack of water (we are used to a river to bathe in and drinking water), poison oak everywhere, poor directions and treacherous one-lane road in with steep cliffs on each side (very dangerous and hard on vehicles). The rain on Saturday helped damp the dust down but there was little preparation for it at the stages and the road could have turned into a mudslide, stranding us there if it had gone on longer.
It was great for me to see a good 20+ Canadians there representing in different ways. Sons of Aurora, Sweet Anomaly performing, naaskow stage managaing, kaitlyn and jeet k doing workshops, art by luke brown and st even (his new stuff with sequoia is great!), visuals by Tech Safari, dancing with Gypsy Slippers, camping with 20hzTerry and Victorians, and driving down through the redwoods and hot springs with Cloud Dancer and Cristos. Great to see some global talent and premier north american djs, as well as hang out with them. Kode IV, for example was 50+ and grooving for hours after his set with the rest of us. People were disappointed by the fact that headliners like eat static, entheogenic didn’t clear customs but it was an amazing trance night/morning session going from naaskow and trevor moontribe to ticon, d-nox, triptych and motion’s (tetraksys) new project solead into an afternoon of dub with bluetech, hallucinogen in dub, shpongle, telefon tel aviv, and shakatura. After that, and a completely glitched out dubstep night with all the west coast heavies like lorin, glitch mob etc (I have decided, after much listening, that its not my “cup of tea”, but everyone was loving it in the highly prevalent fashionista dept.), everyone was non-existent on Sunday night. Friday night offered a fun session in the woods and many top-notch live pa’s with great percussionists, guitarists and MCs. Downtempo highlights were Ott (of course), Liquid Stranger and Youth, Nori, Outersect, as well as the producer from Waterjuice. One criticism with flow that I noticed is that some of the time in the early evenings, one would hear the same music on each stage, like a great dub dj with an mc, or that they all shut down simultaneously. Good flow for each stage, but maybe not for the whole festival. Pretty awesome all around for year 3 of this kind of thing in NA. Lots of great reviews on the symbiosis tribe as well as links to photos.
This guy from LA posted a short video on a streaming site. It captures the essence, if you want to bother downloading the divx plugin from the site:

id like to bring up this concept that i have noticed as cross-referencing various dance cultures across the country. party archetypes - so often i am in different towns and i meet someone who looks identical to a friend in our scene. often this person has either completely different or identical skills, but some are more or less evolved in different directions. VERY curious. for instance , i showed a photo of our friend cass at earthdance on my camera to a girl in edmonton who looked exactly the same (how did SHE get to OUR earthdance?). or often there is an older person with a big heart that goes to the parties that always helps everyone out like mary ellen or erratika and commie. i have met a karen (like as in in fish and karen) whose name was caroline in quebec, only this girl is french and is a photographer. this weekend there were breakbeat versions of both fish and jay michael. in quebec there is a psy trance dj named chris who looks identical to chris from organix. there are 4 bald guys in different cities whose names i always mix up, as well as 2 guys in vic and seattle that i always call by the opposite name. that classic raver girl who must be in her teens with the whole outfit. the drunk local who has absolutely no idea what is really going on but turns out to be a really nice guy with a big heart. i have met brians in vancouver and seattle that look the same. the balmoral house has THREE chris's. i have been told that people have met ME in places i have never been (often, in fact).
i wonder if someday ill be at a party and all the faces blur into everyone that i have ever partied with and it will all be the archetype of the people i know at their highest potentials. this could go in a lot of tangents.
safely said, there will be only 1 shiraz and only 1 squishelle.

International scale psy trance party in canada! better late than never. my camera died on saturday morning, so i grabbed a couple of pictures at the end off of ektoplazm and ravewave.ca to complete the experience.
watch for the video page with footage of solar (deliria, mexico), his deco and lapse-time photos of the setup.
