I loathe them and the whole illusion of freedom that Americans delude themselves into believing the car provides. Maybe not learning to drive until I was 28 had something to do with it. All that steel, plastic, and glass. It's like driving your own semi-automatic weapon. That off my chest: My car is on the fritz. I don't give a shit about having it fixed. I'm taking my time It's a small thing. Just the ignition lock, I've started rid... read more
I don't know what it is about Seattle and the name brands that it has given rise to that just reek of smug petite bourgeoisie pretense:

Starbucks Eddie Bauer Nordstrom's REI Once upon a time they were all nice local stores (for local people) that were affordable, had quality products, and great customer service. Now they are "brands" as insufferable as the people who value them as such. Way back in the early 70's when I lived in Seattle (back when one could afford an apartment on a pi... read more
In "The Variety of Religious Experience" William James writes about "religious awakening." I found the variety in the title lacking, the book being almost entirely about the Christian conversion experience, and confined mostly to protestants-aka all the heathen that haven't sold their soul to the Mother Church in Rome.

I walked away from the book envious of the Christian conversion experience. It's so dramatic and cathartic and seems to stick with people. I've noticed this with friends of... read more

It's so WHITE!!! I sometimes feel like Haley Joel Osmand in the Sixth Sense, but instead of saying "I see dead people" I want to say "I see white people." I don't think anyone in Portland would get it. I tend to suffer from "cultural schizophrenia." I spent the first twelve years of my life in a very small (pop 895)... read more
It seems as though it's been an unusually cold and wet spring, but it's hard to tell.

I tell people that when my mother moved the family here from Nebraska, it rained for 10 years and then I moved to Sacramento. Something I've noticed with this cold spring is that the bloom time for the azaleas and rhododendrons seems to be extended. Maybe it's just the overcast and the contrast of the florescence, the only bright things around in all the grey. But still. Illustrated is one of my faves,... read more

Re: Seed potatoes?
(in Seed Exchange)
I've grown potatoes grown from the supermarket.
They turned out just fine. They aren't as big as the one's from the store, (this may have something to do with climate on not using petroleum based fertilizers) but they taste better. Home grown p... read more discussion post on Mon, July 21, 2008 - 7:24 PM

Just stumbled across this thread today.
Looks as though it was started a while ago. In my early experiences with the faeries (which kept me away from them for so long) I walked around with the label "schizophrenic." I was able to keep it toget... read more discussion post on Sun, July 20, 2008 - 9:32 AM
Re: Door to door religious visits - how do you feel about them / how do you respond?

I got a street sign from New Orleans (one that looks like the authentic ones that are in the French Quarter) that says "Voodoo" on it and posted it prominently. It seemed to dissuade quite a few judeo-christo facscist types.
