shared pain is lessened, shared joy is increased

the lesson of the moth
By Don Marquis, in "archy and mehitabel," 1927

i was talking to a moth
the other evening
he was trying to break into
an electric light bulb
and fry himself on the wires

why do you fellows
pull this stunt i asked him
because it is the conventional
thing for moths or why
if that had been an uncovered
candle instead of an electric
light bulb you would
now be a small unsightly cinder
have you no sense

plenty of it he answered
but at times we get tired
of using it
we get bored with the routine
and crave beauty
and excitement
fire is beautiful
and we know that if we get
too close it will kill us
but what does that matter
it is better to be happy
for a moment
and be burned up with beauty
than to live a long time
and be bored all the while
so we wad all our life up
into one little roll
and then we shoot the roll
that is what life is for
it is better to be a part of beauty
for one instant and then cease to
exist than to exist forever
and never be a part of beauty
our attitude toward life
is come easy go easy
we are like human beings
used to be before they became
too civilized to enjoy themselves

and before i could argue him
out of his philosophy
he went and immolated himself
on a patent cigar lighter
i do not agree with him
myself i would rather have
half the happiness and twice
the longevity

but at the same time i wish
there was something i wanted
as badly as he wanted to fry himself

D.D. Fred: You see when something's not working right, the best thing to do is tear it apart to make it better.

Let joy fill every Briton's heart / For now the country's going to make it / At last a King who looks the part / At last a Queen who looks good naked / Blackadder, Blackadder, A monarch with panache / Blackadder, Blackadder He's got a nice moustache / Everything he wants he'll get / The world is now Blackadder's oyster / Most Prime Ministers are wet / But Baldrick he is even moister / Blackadder, Blackadder, A dog who's got his bone / Blackadder, Blackadder, A bastard on the throne / Blackadder, Blackadder, His beard is neatly curled / Blackadder, Blackadder, He's going to rule the world

I am drunk and you are mad
Who’ll take us home and make us glad?
Said a hundred times, if you had
Two or three cups less, won’t be bad.

In this town I do complain
Every person seems insane
In this place madness like rain
Washes wisdom down the drain.

In the tavern of my soul
Carpet of joy will unroll
My soul is out of control
When trapped in a soulless hole

Captain Jack Harkness: The last time I was sentenced to death, I ordered four hyper-vodkas for my breakfast. All a bit of a blur after that... I woke up in bed with both of my executioners. Lovely couple, they stayed in touch! Can't say that about most executioners.

Rose Tyler: Actually, Doctor, I thought Jack might like this dance.
The Doctor: I'm sure he would, Rose, I'm absolutely certain. But who with?

The Doctor: Who am I to argue with history?
Rose Tyler: Usually the first in line.

The Doctor: [on Jack] If ever he was a captain, he's been defrocked.
Rose Tyler: Yeah? Shame I missed that.
Captain Jack Harkness: Actually, I quit. No-one takes my frock.

Rose Tyler: Are the words 'distract the guard' heading in my general direction?
The Doctor: I don't think that's such a good idea.
Rose Tyler: Don't worry. I can handle it.
Captain Jack Harkness: I've gotten to know Algie quite well since I've been here. Trust me, you're not his type. I'll distract him. Don't wait up.
The Doctor: Don't worry, he's a fifty-first century guy. He's just a little more flexible when it comes to... 'dancing'.
Rose Tyler: What do you mean?
The Doctor: Well, by his time you lot are spread over half the galaxy.
Rose Tyler: Meaning?
The Doctor: So many species, so little time.
Rose Tyler: You mean that's what we do when we get out there? We seek new life and...
The Doctor: Dance.

Ghazal 838

if you pass your night
and merge it with dawn
for the sake of heart
what do you think will happen

if the entire world
is covered with the blossoms
you have labored to plant
what do you think will happen

if the elixir of life
that has been hidden in the dark
fills the desert and towns
what do you think will happen

if because of
your generosity and love
a few humans find their lives
what do you think will happen

if you pour an entire jar
filled with joyous wine
on the head of those already drunk
what do you think will happen

go my friend
bestow your love
even on your enemies
if you touch their hearts
what do you think will happen
Translated by Nader Khalili
Rumi, Fountain of Fire
Cal-Earth, September 1994

AT THIS PARTY

I don't want to be the only one here
Telling all the secrets --

Filling up all the bowls at this party,
Taking all the laughs.

I would like you
To start putting things on the table
That can also feed the soul
The way I do.

That way
We can invite

A hell of a lot more
Friends.
