I found myself half way around the world in the Middle East celebrating Winter Solstice on the beach of the Mediterranean Sea while Hanukkah was coming to a close and Christmas around the corner...and only to find out that most of the Christians in Israel celebrate Christmas on Jan. 7th, not Dec. 25th. What a surreal experience to be in the Old City of Jerusalem on Christmas Day with a 360 view of the Old City at sunset and from the Christian Quarter sang silent night thru the streets as they came to a close for the day. And to mingle with 4 different religions that occupy this holy of holy land in walking distance of each other was an experience I will never forget. I felt so at home in Tel Aviv. The Israelis are quite warm and friendly and treat you like family. The city is beautiful and young!!! Great night life as well as breathtaking history:) Not a usual travel destination for most on a holiday, but for some reason it was perfect for me. What beautiful people I met on my journeys all thru Israel! Happy New Year to all!!

Winter Solstice, or Yule, is held on or around December 22nd. It marks the shortest day of the year (in the Northern Hemisphere) and is an important holiday to those who follow the old ways.

The Winter Solstice marks a crucial part of the natural cycle. In a real sense, the sun begins anew its journey toward longer days, times of new growth and renewal of the world once again. In a spiritual sense, it is a reminder that in order for a new path to begin, the old one must end and that spring will come again.
