Simply put: Xinc is one of the finest people I know. Every interaction with him is a privilege.

about me
I'm a high-functioning geek. I can survive cocktail parties and other social functions unscathed and without letting on that I surreptitiously yanked all the hosts mp3s onto my phone while making idle chat.
When not trying to blend in with polite society I help organize the LayerOne information security conference, and do general monkey-work for Defcon and Toorcon. I'm also involved with the local LA2600 and DC213 meetings. Really, I'm just completing the trifecta of LiveJournal, MySpace and Tribe, since we've now evolved to the point where we're too cool for email.

Owing to the general sinking ship vibe Tribe's had the past few months, I haven't really been using the site much. But I just logged in and there are pro-Proposition 8 ads all over the place. My question is simple: WTF? I mean, seriously, did someone actually specifically buy ad space on Tribe, knowing that very large segments of the userbase are from the burner, hippy, BDSM, alt and poly communities? It just doesn't seem like a receptive audience to what is essentially legislated bigotry.

Yesterday evening I had an jarring reminder about the importance of mindfulness, and the pitfall of passivity. After a four-year hiatus of motorcycle riding, a close friend who I taught to ride a decade back decided I needed to get back into the sport. He's in the process of moving and asked me to "hang onto" his bike for a few weeks so he wouldn't have to deal with it - a clear wink-wink, nudge-nudge attempt to get me hooked again. As if the intent wasn't overt enough, he started sending me ...

... visited an ecological disaster area, got yelled at by an irate old man at a rest area, crawled under a man-made mountain of hay, car parts and paint, stood atop an active hydrogen sulfide mud pot, wandered through abandoned buildings, and witnessed first hand what century of exposure to alkali salt storms can do to a town.

So, it's 5 AM and I'm processing pictures instead of sleeping. I think that officially makes me a junkie. Just starting to learn how to make proper use of the new flash, but wow it makes a huge difference in situations like this.
