about me
I'm a high-functioning geek. I can survive cocktail parties and other social functions unscathed and without letting on that I surreptitiously yanked all the hosts mp3s onto my phone while making idle chat.

When not trying to blend in with polite society I help organize the LayerOne information security conference, and do general monkey-work for Defcon and Toorcon. I'm also involved with the local LA2600 and DC213 meetings.

Really, I'm just completing the trifecta of LiveJournal, MySpace and Tribe, since we've now evolved to the point where we're too cool for email.

String Drivel

... visited an ecological disaster area, got yelled at by an irate old man at a rest area, crawled under a man-made mountain of hay, car parts and paint, stood atop an active hydrogen sulfide mud pot, wandered through abandoned buildings, and witnessed first hand what century of exposure to alkali salt storms can do to a town.

So, it's 5 AM and I'm processing pictures instead of sleeping. I think that officially makes me a junkie. Just starting to learn how to make proper use of the new flash, but wow it makes a huge difference in situations like this.

Thanks to Project Alma, Scooter, Helen, Paris, and everyone else for an awesome evening. Pics are up at the link below. If you want full-res copies of some of them just drop me a message.

Instead of killing the turkey, it was turned over to CIA for waterboarding and ghost transport to Syria. Members of the jury who entered the unanimous guilty verdict against the turkey on drug and weapons violations are now coming forward with reports of bribery and coercion by government officials throughout the process. The guilty verdict came as a blow to many legally embattled avians who were looking to this case as a turning point in the judicial treatment of non-hominids. "Gun running? ... read more

"I see your point but I still want to stab you in the skull with a length of rebar."
-Found on a support forum for an online game

See, it's this kind of detached self-awareness and honesty with others that makes "internet culture" what it is. Well, that and a lot of porn and whining.

Just got back from Burning Man and into the office. Maybe it's different for veterans, but after my first time out I'm having an interesting time adjusting. On the drive back, my brain kept interpreting random lights off on the side of the road as people spinning fire. This morning, I woke up at around 5:00 in my apartment, convinced I was in a large tent in the middle of a white out. Not just a dream carried over - I really felt like I was covered in dust and couldn't see clearly for all of ... read more
