</a>
<div>so I'm throwing a party, rocking the winebar again. on a vaguely unrelated note, it's almost my birfday. got a buncha folk excited to play moozaks, come chillits.
and no, the comic is in no way related to this post. I just agree that literary criticism is a crock o'shit. but I was really good at it back in cahlidge.

________________________________________

So it's official. The first night we did at the Vino Vixens winebar totally went off, and now it's a monthly on first fridays. Keep your eyes peeled (that phrase makes no sense to me), we got some funshtuff in store for the coming months.

A 3000+ square foot non-smoking winebar with plush couches, art, ambient lighting... Vino Vixens is my new favorite venue in town. We will rock this place propah, with the ambient/downbeat stylee.
And it's free !!

::Lineup::
Ahsan (Hey That's Me!/Ambient Awakenings)
I'll be opening the night dropping them mentallist ambient jams. And it's my birthday. Come marvel at my multitasking prowess as I DJ while getting spanked AND sipping wine. I too am bewildered at how I manage not to spill...

Bot23 (E.L.M.)
Beau is one of my favorite local DJs. He's known for his banging electro DJ sets and production, but we've snagged him to throw down some melodic downtempo. The Bot does not disappoint.

Tertyl (11:11)
It seemed like Tertyl played every other party when I first moved to Portland, almost a decade ago. I don't think he's played out much recently, which is a durned shame, cuz he is a fine DJ. His downtempo sets are a rare treat. Hopefully his sexytymemuzik will overpower our next act...

The Cockblockers (Chickenhed)
I know it's called Ambient Awakenings, but that is a nip misleading. Jasno (not a typo) and Philly will workits from down to midtempo, delving into realms of minimal techno, psy and whatever else they damn well please. And for reals. I must apologize in advance, for NOBODY gets laid when I book these guys.
[Prove me wrong, ladies. Prove me wrong.]

<div>so apparently, we've been asked to pull an ambient area out of our asses for emergnsee. luckily, we are colon scrapers of the highest caliber, and we certainly do store ambience up there aplenty. the absence of a budget won't hold us back much... but yes. ambience at night, at this point planned 1am to dawn friday and saturday nights. look for a 30 ft dome, probably glowy. and, like, hella ambient.

things we need that u might have:
-deco (long flowy fabrics especially)
-cushy ness
-rugs/carpets
-foam pads
-a truck or large van and willingness to haul some shtuff, prolly just rugging/cushy ness
-we have 4 hammocks, could always use another!

and no, we can't get u a discounted ticket for contributing, getting tix for ourselves at this late stage has been like squeezing rocks to make lemonade. we would love u mega heap and such tho, and take good care of your shtuff. though it is an outdoor, and sometimes dirt happens, so keep that in mind.

yippee. our winebar night on thursday (which, btw, totally went off and exceeded all expectations) reignited my jones for event production, especially the last minute seat of the pants variety. but yes, excited. have not made it out to this fest in a few years, soooo stoked to see filastine, his sets are not to be missed.

so yes! come over and hang out, and be all ambient n shit.

UPDATED:
other stuff we may need...
-tarps
-lighting... we are pretty restricted on power, so am hoping for LED lighting to manifest as a low-power alternative to christmas lights
-what else am I forgetting?? tell me!</div>

hello beautiful ppl, I am uber stoked to kick off what we hope to be the first in a series of nights at the pimpest wine bar in town, Vino Vixens (2929 SE Powell Blvd). And they serve beer too!

When I first walked into their backspace, I knew I had to throw a party here. a 3000+ square foot non-smoking space with plush couches, art, ambient lighting, it is easily the best venue I've come across in Portland. And we will rock this place propah, with the ambient/downbeat stylee...
And it's free !!

::Lineup::
Ahsan (Hey That's Me!/Ambient Awakenings)
I'll be opening the night with ambience on a jazzy tip. Come say hi, try to sweet talk me into buying u a drink.

Devon (Ambient Awakenings)
Local Don of Dubadelic Downbeat, Patrick brings it in a big way. Come checkits.

Deafchild (Team Cowper)
Ian is easily one of the finest DJ's in the Pacific Northwest. Half the time I've seen him play on a big lineup, he upstages the headliner. He almost never gets asked to play down/mid-tempo sets, so this will be a rare treat. psy acid chunky housey breaky whatever, Ian rocks it.

brew/hike/camp advice for the drive up north..

<div>so! next week, I'm gonna drive up from LA back to PNW, was looking for suggestions of places to stop, particularly in norcal. in the eternal debate of beer versus nature, I am leaning to making this a brewery tour, or at least stopping at a few breweries between hikes n such.

will be hugging the coast till SF, with a likely stop in big sur. any tips on camping/hikes in that area would be very appreciated, or anywhere else along the coastal route.
coupla days in the bay, long enough to hit up some friends, a fire jam, and a digital arts fest (how cool does this shit look? http://01sj.org/?p=508 ) before getting my drink/hike on further north.

Norcal breweries I plan to visit so far:
Russian River Brewing in Santa Rosa (u can't find their beer anywhere cuz they're TINY and ridiculously good)
Anderson Valley in Booneville
North Coast Brewing in Eureka

those destinations would have me hugging the coast again, which is fine by me. looking for suggestions of other breweries anywhere along the california coast or in the bay area, or even southern oregon, and for fave camp/hike spots along that same route.
and don't bother suggesting mendocino brewing. while it is along my route, they're one hit wonders with their eye of the hawk ale.
oh ya! also wanna hit up redwoods country somewhere along the way for a hike.

I was trying to convince a friend to let me fly them down to LA to join me for the drive back up, but it doesn't look like he can get the time off. if anyone else that isn't excessively creepy or smell funny wants to start their summer propah with a meandering coastal roadtrip, hollah !

good god I'm excited. haven't been on a real roadtrip since alaska two summers ago.
'tis the season...</div>

<div>I'd be rocking out to jamie lidell tonight at berbati's. one of the more interesting techno producers around who also produced two of the best soul albums of recent decades. unfortunately, I will also just miss his LA and SF shows, so counting on friends to allow me to get my soulgroove on vicariously.

<div>I typically go thru way too much music to care to post about any particular album, but in case any yall were wondering, jamie lidell's new album is the best damn soul album since, well, since his last album 3 years ago. doubly more impressive for him being a scrawny, pale-ass british techno producer.
while I wouldn't say this track is the best one from the new album, the video does get props for featuring him making out with a unicorn.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T--j0_yxBaY
rock that shit, stands up to the classics of the heyday of soul. I can already tell it will be a fat, sunshiney slice of my summer '08 soundtrack.

and a grand summer it will be.
gave notice at work, friday will be my last day. hot, hot, hot shit. after turning down the job offer in saigon that this was supposed to lead to, the realization of not wanting to be here kinda settled in. LA was far more livable than I thought, but it is not for me right now. gonna head back to the PNW and apply to schools in the fall.
and while I had been looking forward to moving overseas, it was not the right time or place. I grew up in a congested, polluted 3rd world city and it just ain't where I'm at. though I was really looking forward to being able to order pho in vietnamese, woulda made me that much more exotic (short of getting a bone thru the nose or DJing crappy world electronica, I may be running outta options in that department).

at some point this month, will go help my mom and sister move, and get some chill time with my one year old nephew. not only does the little bugger look like me, but he also has the same tendencies I did at that age: he really likes to draw on the wall, and is a big fan of jamming foreign objects into the VCR slot, the mail slot, or any other crevice in reach (Freud? Freud? Bueller?).
but yes, it should be fun. I for one am looking forward to getting to draw on the wall and have someone else take the heat for it.

I will stay in LA long enough to hit lightning in a bottle at the end of may (wow, it has been a coupla years since festivals have gotten to dictate my summer schedule), and then take a stumbling wander of a drive up north. seattle is the destination I have in mind. that is as concrete of a statement I care to make with the luscious uncertainty of an open summer. looming.. oh man. just kinda conjures ice cream melting on the tongue. lemme savor it for now.

feel no way sister, big tings a gwan.
time longer den rope, en effry ting goan be irie...</div>

<div>I just worked three days with a fever, and it was great.
well, actually it sucked donkey balls, but it sucked enough that I am giving notice to my boss and leaving this place soontime.
the job wasn't bad, and LA has a lotta charm, but it wasn't the fit for the moment. plus, this is the longest I've been in one place for a few years now.
it is said that travel is equal parts flight and pursuit. sometimes it's hard to tell the two apart.
a cross-country drive has felt pressing for other reasons, and now I can pull it off. and ya, resettlement be imminent.

<div>so I'd decided to take up argon's january challenge, in decidedly half-assed and watered down form. he's abstaining from meat/dairy/dope/booze/TV/sex for the whole month. I'm only rocking it till next week, and I'm not doing the dietary restrictions. I've tried cutting out meat before, and it just makes me feel sluggish and hungry. I was eating well too, but there's something to be said for listening to one's body. and I knew I wasn't gonna stick to the TV restriction when I realized Daily Show was coming back on, so I allow myself an hour/day.

it is sorta silly reasoning, but I pushed back doctor visits for my busted wrist from the end of december till next week, I thought maybe I could nuke that shit with detox and acupuncture n herbalist shtuff to improve my chances at not needing further surgeries. and yet I am so ready to be done with this, it's been almost a freakn year. I'm content with the limited mobility I currently have, a bone graft would nip that away and make me feel like a chump for going thru a year of intense physiotherapy only to lose those gains.

if that is the case, it's not time-sensitive so I kinda want to postpone surgery a few years to enjoy what I got that much longer. the thing is that if I do get it now rather than later, the seattle crime victims coverage will still pay for it. I never really had faith in government social programs, but they have totally hooked me up over the last year, even after moving to LA.
anyhoo, I just hate having this hanging over my head and I want to know one way or another. it's all I can think about and it is really getting to me. meh, the decreased mobility doesn't bug me that much, I think I am looking more for the symbolic victory of completing the healing process.

I am banking on chinese herbal gunk and twice weekly acupuncture helping me out. short of sticking a crystal up my bum to heal my wrist chakra, I had been receptive to hippy suggestions left and right. the most frequently mentioned herb for broken bones seems to be comfrey, but I put that stuff on my wrist a few times a day, every day for the first 3 months out of a cast without any tangible benefit. so yes, my faith in these alternative remedies has been worn thin. the one thing that I do believe worked was reiki, for the nerve damage, not structural, and emotional shtuff.

someone even suggested applying uber concentrated oregano oil. I must say, it was kinda nice smelling like pizza for a month, and honestly, girls actually seemed to respond to it, better than I think they would to cologne ("ooooh, u smell... SPICY"). I think it mostly intrigued them cuz they were expecting me to smell like sandalwood and toasted cumin.
on a sidenote, my favorite hippy pick up line till I realized it conjures watersports: "come bathe in my tantric river of light..." I have yet to try it out, I will report back.

while I'm rambling randomly, I just discovered that one of my current fave tunes (an epically terrible german techno remix of rubber ducky) has a youtube mashup.

    </a>
<div>I was supposed to be going in for wrist surgery today, but I made a last minute decision to reschedule for a week later. thus I can throw down at LA decom saturday! my first and last fire performance of the year... now I just gotta pull a choreography outta my ass. rescheduling was definitely a convenient choice...

my wrist has not been healing despite 9 months passing, so a bone graft awaits and I will be back in a cast for some time. most folks with this severe injury get about 50% mobility back, but I'm rockn at least 60%, so that is good. apparently this surgery won't improve that and may reduce mobility further, but if I don't get it, then 20 years down the line I will have debilitating arthritis. the doc says that if I was 70 or if I "plan to live fast and die young", he'd tell me not to bother with surgery. I plan to live fast and live long, thank u very much.
so yes, fire performance makes a dandy of an excuse to postpone confronting this. honestly, don't know why I don't just get this surgery next month. or next year. it is not a pressing procedure and may make things worse, and the real benefit of it won't be evident for 20 years...

man I'm not looking forward to being in a cast again. after half a year of excruciating physiotherapy, I will be back to square one. but been there done that, it'll be easier this time around, and I won't be unrealistically optimistic. the real tragedy is that my reach-around capacity will be effectively halved, again. I just wanna be done with this all and move on, but it doesn't seem to end. and while I'm whining, apparently I need eye surgery for an unpeeling retina, another fine product of the blunt end of a gun. I hear it is a fairly simple procedure, still an annoying reminder.

getting pistolwhipped silly was an awakening of sorts. it tuned me in to a part of the human experience that I had felt totally disassociated from, and just could not relate to before. I never understood how one person could choose to inflict physical harm upon another, let alone kill. the revenge fantasies subsided long ago, but I can see that we all have it in our capacity, as lovey dovey as we may be. I'm not sure yet what I gain from such an understanding, something to dwell on... if not for the whole gimpitude thing, I'd almost say I was glad this shit happened, almost.

depictions of violence strike me differently now. sometimes when watching/reading the news, a faceless statistic will just trigger something within me, and I'd find myself awash in emotions not my own, a visceral torrent of anguished cries from nowhere.
it creeps the living shit outta me.
and frankly, these empathic surges don't fill me with the hope for our species that I long to feel. there are beautiful pockets of being all around us, and I am desperately craning my neck to see a wave of change on the horizon... it won't stop me from trying to live the example, but discouraging nonetheless.

regarding my physical healing process, folks have been feeding me lines of thinkn positivity n such. I have been living it as long as I could, but being realistic and coming to terms, well, mayhaps there is something to be said for that. my shattered wrist is now inflexible scar tissue, and yet I can function and go about my day. encountering jars and macho handshakes can suck, but other than that it aint too bad. most folks with such an injury have chronic pain, and my wrist is practically painless when it's straight. spinning fire gets kinda intense, but if anything it just amplifies the rush.

on a brighter note, LA is proving surprisingly livable. easily the best food of any city I've lived in, for that alone it is worthwhile. there is so much going on that u miss 99% of it by necessity, and yet it's still nice knowing that it is out there as it passes u by. mos def, there is a vibrance to the shades of grey in this concrete jungle. tho I do know I won't be here for the long term, it's just too spread out for me to feel the sense of community I grew accustomed to in portland and seattle.
peace in the middle east,

Physics - Presented to Jack Harvey, John Culveno, Warren Payne, Steve Cowle, Michael Lawrance, David Stuart, and Robyn Williams of Australia, for their irresistible report "An Analysis of the Forces Required to Drag Sheep over Various Surfaces."

Aviation: Patricia V. Agostino, Santiago A. Plano and Diego A. Golombek, for discovering that hamsters recover from jetlag more quickly when given Viagra.

Medicine: Daniel M. Livingstone and Hersher T. Murphy of The Agricultural Institute of Central Iowa, for demonstrating that a shaved llama is more prone to contracting Syphillis.

ok, so I made that last one up (the rest are real), but man, could u imagine such a study's design protocol? don't look at me like that, it's no less twisted than the logic of getting a hamster jetlag and then giving it viagra.

a slow evening @ work = playa rant

<div>this is for all yall frantic folk playa-bound. u know who are... tryna figure out how to feed, bathe, and clothe yourself for a week in the desert when u can barely manage in the city... scrambling to duct tape a costume outta stuffed monkey pelt and glowsticks while staking out parameters/expectations/safe words with your significant other (threesome thursday!). only to realize the week before that u contracted hepatitis from your housemate's fish tacos (and no, that isn't a euphemism but it should be), and that u don't have a ride cuz the driver neglected to ask for time off work...

may u suddenly grasp the abysmal structural integrity of that PVC shade monstrosity u spent the last month designing. may your dope stash run out halfway thru the week so that u must dwell in sobriety with how much sand is in your underpants and how silly u look in that faux fur/neon kink/assless chaps ensemble. may u also realize that sandy underpants defeat the point of assless chaps.

may u wake up in a strange tent sandwiched between a day-glo midget and your old college anthropology professor (seriously, there are so many anthro professors on the playa. they even have a meetup where they get together and whine about not having their BM-centric "fieldwork" taken seriously. apparently academia doesn't give a rat's ass about the social ramifications of naked hippies.).

the point is, it's not worth the effort, cuz u won't make it anyhoo. no one will.
http://www.theonion.com/content/node/29344

I'm sure some of u have already seen that, but it is new to me. I give props to the onion for cracking jokes that only a freaky sliver of their readership would get.

I suppose I am more than a little bummed not being able to get the time off work to rock the playa this year. while it will be nice to save a grand, I will miss having a happy reunion with some very dear folk...
on the plus side, I will now definitely make it to symbiosis a few weeks later, for a happy lil reunion along with the sickest festival lineup I have ever seen.
peace in the middle east,

<div>it was a good birthday, except that, at dinner, my raw ahi burger was actually seared. that annoyed me. it was still tasty, but it's the principle, dammit.
but yes. to make up for that disappointment, I better throw myself a party this weekend.
I like the whole birthday thing as an arbitrary celebration of life. mostly, it's just a good excuse to bring friends together. nobody wants to get together to celebrate groundhog's day, I've tried.
I know I have said it before, but this really is one of my favorite lineups. a spattering of live electronic/experimental, and some yum diddly DJs. hopefully the music will be weird enough to keep the party small, but if not, we will make the proper ambience adjustments to pick off the weak of the herd.
seriously though, a damn fine assortment of eclectic electronica. details to follow.
ambient/glitch/dub/IDM and whatever the fuck morning may bring... it's a party.

<div>hmm.
nnyesss. I have a funny story involving a latenight encounter in the hallway with a naked landlord wielding a sledgehammer. it was ok though, for two reasons; he's not my landlord, and the fellow's an artist, so he's allowed to be a weirdo. he was expressing grumpiness at us being loud and waking him and making an artistic statement at the same time, or something. I think that the world is a funny place... and that the understatement is a lost art. ain't no subtlety in swinging a sledgehammer.

I feel like I've come along a ways, sitting on a hill with a nice view of whole heap big tings a gwan, down the road n such. and the pacific ocean. killer view of the ocean, living a block away for the next month. still gimp, wrist has reached where it should have been several months ago, and the last appointment was less than hopeful. I just started shaking hands again, but have realized that was premature. whatever. token gestures are overrated.

I have never felt so entwined and disassociated from the beautiful mess that is the human condition. I live in LA, and yet that is a good thing. so ya, contradictions abound.
will be moving to southeast asia sometime in the fall, probably vietnam. I would just backpack thailand for coupla months, but that's so cliche... freakn hippies. good thing them southeast asians have wimpy handshakes.
I got a job for a freight import/export biz that will let me travel and live overseas, and that is pretty sweet. I really do love the PNW, but I wasn't quite feeling myself as of late. things changed, and I just felt an itchy distance with the ppl and places I've known for years. part of it is certainly that I was having trouble integrating the experiences of the last half year, think I need to step away to reconcile them bits n pieces. but a catalyst is a good thing. I suspect I'll be back at some point, it may be a year or few.
I have heard thru the grapevine a grumble or two of me slipping away with little warning. it's ok, I'll slip back with little warning too, so it'll even out.
one love, bitches.

<div>figuring out if I can pull things together to make this work. this is a last minute decision, not sure who among my friends are making it out there, I do not have a ride yet, wondering if any folk are making the trip and are coming back either sunday or early monday, I got a flight to catch on monday so this detail would be crucial.
if anyone can offer a ride or knows of a ride, plz lemme know!

<div>hoozah. was in denver for a few days, just made it over to boulder to visit a dear friend, been here less than a day and already have some nifty whack stories, got some drunken frat boy's blood on me, which really was not my fault, honest. I don't go looking for trouble, I just seem to have to deal with it a fair bit. long story, wasn't really violent as much as just a wasted clumsy guy. by the end of it, he was apologizing profusely and professing his love for us and going on about how awesome we were. I think he would have given me a noogy if I gave him half the chance...
denver was ok, but boulder kicks ass, I've met a lotta folks that remind me of portland family, though there are lotsa frat boys too, a funny mix. about to venture into the mountains and do some exploring. a funny thing I was not expecting, there are gobs of nepalese folks here, I think they are attracted to the mountains of this region, though I doubt this can compare to the himalayas...</div>
