sometimes you make me laugh
usually you just drive me crazy
which is why i luv ya like the sun and moon
especially when you roast a chicken for me, watch football, make fun of philly sports fans, pull the tackle n tickle and talk on the phone like 'important guy'
and thats why you are my brothafromanuthamotha and why I will always call you when I am making soup

"soul-felt"
and one for good measure
"genuine"

Oh Robbie...
Who fucking knows what to say?
Nice beats! You're one of my favorite DJs and I don't like listening to DJs.
Nice lion hat. I see you in it all the time and I still feel a little bit stupid because I don't understand it. And I like that.
Nice facial hair. I'm a fan of facial hair and you're one to experiment. That's cool too.
Oh, and then there's all that crap about you being a super cool guy with a good heart and a hard working demeanor. You know. That crap.
It's been great getting to know you. And here's to a lot more of that. Soon I may know how to blackmail you. (don't worry... I take bribes)

PRESS INFO: Robert Kowal / rob@sffunk.com / 415-971-4527
TICKETS: $12 adv.at www.sunsettickets.com. $12 at the door before 11pm
DETAILS: Sunset presents an evening of eclectic electronica featuring Orlando drum and bass legend AK1200, bombing San Francisco on his “Weapons of Tomorrow Tour”. The night will also feature live four-piece house and breaks from BLVD featuring MC Souleye, Compression SF’s slamming DJ tag team 2 Cents and local funk maven Motion Potion.
Dave Minner earned his name in the Orlando clubs in the early 90’s; dubbed AK1200 by DJ Icey because “he sounded like an AK-47 on the 1s and 2s”. With an ear for the edge, AK1200 was instrumental in helping keep breakbeat alive in the U.S. underground scene after it had lost popularity in the U.K. As the early '90s saw the birth of jungle and, later on, drum'n'bass in the U.S. underground, AK found his place as a tireless pioneer of the new sound. He toured extensively, scored a residency at San Francisco's legendary club Spundae, and published the magazine Junglized with musical colleague DJ Jeffee. His pattern was fairly predictable: He would champion a new subgenre only until everyone else had heard about it and jumped onto the bandwagon. When that happened, he'd veer off into another new niche of electronica that no one had yet heard of. Finally, in the mid-'90s, he decided to focus on producing and remixing, jumping into a prolific career that included collaborations with the likes of Keoki and Rabbit in the Moon, A Tribe Called Quest and the Crystal Method In 1999, he came full-circle, headlining the national Planet of the Drums tour which blasted its way through Mighty in June.
His forthcoming mix “Weapons of Tomorrow” highlights tracks from virtually unknown producers from across the globe. In order to highlight undiscovered talent and contribute to the future of the scene, he asked for submissions on a D&B message board and the response was massive- hundreds upon hundreds of tracks. AK selected 20 that he believed were representative of the genre’s progression. He affirms that each track “has the production quality that rivals most anyone else out there and if I were to get this tune off Dom or Dylan or Andy C, I would be playing them to death, so why discount these producers? Because they haven’t made it yet? That’s when I realized that this is exactly what the DnB world needs to create a bit of momentum again: all fresh blood.”
2007 found San Francisco’s hottest live house and breaks trio, BLVD, adding an MC, a constant touring schedule and a veritable legion of fans. An extended residency in Colorado last Spring introduced them to MC Souleye, who has become a fixture in the band. His vocal contribution added extra flavor to the ever-evolving electronic soup conjured by drummer Dylan McIntosh, bass/keyboardist Tripp Baines and guitarist Curtis Sloan. The results have been obvious, with an ever-expanding audience following them to high profile slots at places like Symbiosis, Lightning in a Bottle, and the Burning Man Festival.
2Cents is a drum and bass duo made up of longtime Compression residents Aye~n and Mal who know more about jungle than the average Lion. Eclectic electrician Citizen Ten will open the main room while the backroom will feature breaks/mashup enthusiast Motion Potion, electro/minimal purveyor Victor Vega, and Beat Church founder Neptune.

DETAILS: New Years has a big ego and he’s been talking a lot of trash about how great he is. We think he’s ripe for an ass-kicking. Seriously, for professional party-goers, New Years may be the worst night of the year to go out; dressing up, stifling traffic, and ridiculous cover charges just to get IN, then dealing with overcrowding, over-hyped music, couples fighting publicly, and drunk amateurs barfing on your shoe. On December 28, Sunset Promotions & the Fringe, the folks who brought you Funksgiving and Freqo de Mayo, rip the lid off New Years and drop a dukie on the whole over-hyped farce that New Years has become. Join us as we ring in the day before the worst night of the year with a malt liquor toast, piñata drop at midnight, the broken countdown, ghetto-formal (pimp and ho yo!) attire, a cheap ticket (10 bucks) , and some UNDER-hyped, OVER-funky music featuring two heroes of the East Coast underground music world Fort Knox Five and DJ Rekha.
Fort Knox Five has been churning out newschool funk with an oldschool sound for years now. With some of the most coveted limited-release breaks records on the planet emerging from their Washington DC-based Fort Knox Recordings label, FK5 has emerged as a leader in the struggle to make dance music relevant to folks who like the live sound. Along with Allgood Funk Alliance, Kraak & Smaak, Wicked Lester and Bay Area adherents like Romanowski, FK5 makes funk that sounds like… well… funk. With elements of dub, Latin, Brazillian and that unique FK5 behind-the-beat syncopation theirs are some of the only
dance tracks that stand out from the rest. The jefe of the junta, John Horvath will be representing the brand with a DJ set that’s sure to bring the house down.
DJ Rekha (Basement Bhangra, NYC – www.myspace.com/djrheka) is celebrating the release of her critically acclaimed debut album, DJ REKHA presents BASEMENT BHANGRA (named after her world famous long running NY monthly party) Born in London, proudly raised in New York, Rekha Malhotra is a cultural instigator who’s established herself as a musical pioneer and community activist. Newsweek recognized her as one of the most influential South Asians in the US, and she has been praised by The New York Times, CNN, The Fader, Village Voice, and The Washington Post, among others. She has been relentless in her mission to bring South Asian Music and Culture to New York by spinning at events like P.S. 1’s Warm Up Series, Central Park’s Summerstage, Soundlab and Brooklyn Museum’s First Saturdays as well as her own parties including Mutiny, Bollywood Disco and the incredibly popular Basement Bhangra. She is known for her extraordinary musical range and was even chosen by documentarian Sarah Jones to work on the Obie Winning show “Bridge and Tunnel.” Rekha was also picked to be Associate Producer and Music Supervisor for the NPR Documentary “Feet in Two Worlds.”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Diplo (Fools Gold, Philadelphia – www.myspace.com/diplo): There are few DJs or producers on planet earth who have accomplished as much in as little time as Wes Pentz. From the art-scene at the Guggenheim in New York, to the bullet-riddled favelas of Rio di Janeiro to the sweat-soaked streets of Bombay and Bangladesh, Diplo has redefined the concept of “world music”. His merger of electronic backbeats, international rhythms, obscure influences and uncompromising vocals defined a sound, a style, and wildly successful series of releases known as Hollertronix. He spent years circling the globe with London superstar MC M.I.A. in a collaboration that broke down genre walls and dropped a few political bombs as well. He is credited with bringing Brazil’s Baile Funk sound to the US, reworking “Dirty South instrumentality into high art” (Now Magazine) and challenging every commonly held notion about Djs and producers. Recently he confounded the Fools Gold label with Nick Catchdubs as a vehicle for further aural mayhem. He estimates that his own tracks and reworks comprise more than 80% of his sets, and the energy he puts into these tracks is only matched by the energy he unleashes while performing them. On New Years Eve at Temple, he will play an exclusive 2 hour set beginning at the stroke of midnight.
DJ Rekha (Basement Bhangra, NYC – www.myspace.com/djrheka) DJ Rekha is celebrating the release of her critically acclaimed debut album, DJ REKHA presents BASEMENT BHANGRA (named after her world famous long running NY monthly party) Born in London, proudly raised in New York, Rekha Malhotra is a cultural instigator who’s established herself as a musical pioneer and community activist. Newsweek recognized her as one of the most influential South Asians in the US, and she has been praised by The New York Times, CNN, The Fader, Village Voice, and The Washington Post, among others. She is known for her extraordinary musical range and was even chosen by documentarian Sarah Jones to work on the Obie Winning show “Bridge and Tunnel.” Rekha was also picked to be Associate Producer and Music Supervisor for the NPR Documentary “Feet in Two Worlds.” DJ Rekha’s talents further extend into her own production company Sangament, which produces live concerts and provides specialized music consulting services to numerous businesses in the record industry.
Pharrell (Fluokids, Paris – www.fluokids.com) Pharrell is the "CEO" of the european audioblog "fluokids", at 23 years old he already has his own residence on the french national radio, played with most of the major artist of the new electronic scene, opened for Justice on their last French tour, and promotes the monthly 'panik' party in Paris. Behind the decks, he's not just runnin' the dancefloor hits of the moment, he always try to bring some new stuff, from his first techno feelings to the last electronic bangers.
Nick Catchdubs (Fools Gold, NYC – www.myspace.com/nickcatchdubs) Nick Catchdubs is a Brooklyn-based DJ and co-founder of the Fool's Gold record label. For the past four years he's been playing shows with the likes of MIA, Spank Rock and the Clipse, and rocking parties around the globe with a mix of hip hop, electro, dancehall, rock and more.
Motion Potion (the Fringe/ Mutaytor, SF – www.myspace.com/motionpotion)The “Dj for people who hate Djs” (SFWeekly) seems to have something for everyone. Funk impresario, mashup enthusiast, and live collaborator with Parliament-Funkadelic, Rebirth Brass Band and the turntablist for the 45-piece indie techno circus known as the Mutaytor. His career has been an attempt to break down genre and scene barriers, playing every conceivable kind of music in the course of a night, a set, or a seven-minute mash-up. His productions aim to unify the dance club and the concert hall with juicy, listening music (rock and funk) arrayed over breakbeats. His mix CD's range wider than most label's catalogs; live mixes that range from underground hip hop to electronic breaks to world fusion to rare southern rock (downloadable at www.musicv2.com/artist/motion_potion). The common denominator seems to be "the funk" whether it be funky urban electronic breaks, funky underground hip hop, funky nu-school rock and electroclash, or just plain sho'nuff motherfunkin' FUNK.
DJ Richie Panic (Robot Rock/Frisco Disco – www.myspace.com/richiepanicisagod) Richie Panic has been one of the foremost innovators on the SF DJ scene for years now. His “Frisco Disco” party at the old Arrow Bar with Jeffrodesiac was one of the few local weeklies that deserved to be called “legendary”. From rock to punk to disco to house to ghetto-tech to becoming one of the city’s foremost tastemakers and an absolute authority on electroclash, Richie Panic is a San Francisco institution.
Eric Sharp (Rockit Science/Pacific Sound - www.myspace.com/ericsharp A staple of the San Francisco hosue scene, Eric Sharp seems to be anywhere and everywhere. From “Rockit Science” warehouse parties to the city’s most notable clubs, Eric drops every flavor of house under the sun. What sets him apart is his infectious enthusiasm for music and nightlife. Eric loves the hell out of life, music and probably you too; which is evident anytime you bump into him, or when you’re lucky enough to hear him spin.
Miss Toats & Richard Oh? (Big Stereo – www.myspace.com/bigstereosucks) Hosts of the weekly Tuesday night “Big Stereo” parties at Pink in the Mission, Miss Toats & Richard Oh?!! Make musical waves by staying ahead of the grain. Electro, rock, house, disco: the choicest cuts, the dopest downloads, the most haphazard fashion can all . It’s the music they take seriously, not themselves.
Janaka Selecta (Dhamaal - www. myspace.com/janakaselekta) For more than 5 years, Janaka Selekta organized and took part in some of the most groundbreaking underground musical gatherings in the Bay Area. The Dhamaal collective parties, taking place at Club 6 merged classical live Indian music with the most modern electronic beats, as well as South Asian fashion, cuisine, and artwork. In addition to Dhamaal \ Janaka has organized the massive “Worldly” parties, hosting international superstars like State of Bengal, Karsh Kale, General Midi and Cheb I Sabbah as well as weekly Outerworldly parties at Madrone Lounge. DETAILS: The Funk is coming back and Uncle Jam wants YOU! After a spectacular kickoff party on January 18, Funkonnection returns to San Francisco on February16 with a massive lineup featuring the Godfather of Hip Hop Culture, Afrika Bambaataa, DC nufunk hero Allgood Funk Alliance and Calgary future-disco maven Neighbor. Local heroes include Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist (True Skool), Chauncey B (Dalva) and residents Motion Potion, Tal M Klein and Malarkey. With Bambaataa making his first-ever appearance at Mighty at this already buzzed-about party, tickets are sure to go fast.
Arika Bambaataa, whose name literally translates to “affectionate leader” is one of the three main originators of break-beat deejaying, and is respectfully known as the “Godfather” of Hip Hop culture as well as the Father of the Electro Funk Sound. He was the first to coin the term “Hip Hop”, encompassing the elements of music, graffiti, dance and knowledge, thereby identifying Hip Hop as a unique culture unto itself. After his 1982 hit sensation, “Planet Rock” , Bambaataa organized the first international Hip Hop tour of B-Boys, Graffiti Artists, DJs and Emcees, providing the world with a glimpse of the cultural revolution called Hip Hop. He has consistently made records nationally and internationally, and has helped to define the cutting edge of music throughout from rap, through electro, to house and electronic breaks.
Allgood Funk Alliance has been churning out newschool funk with an oldschool sound for years now. With some of the most coveted limited-release breaks records on the planet emerging from their Washington DC-based Funk Weapons label, AGFA has emerged as a leader in the struggle to make dance music relevant to folks who like the live sound. AGFA makes funk that sounds like… well… funk. DJ Neighbor is a rising star from Calgary’s surprisingly explosive nufunk scene. With a sound that modernizes classic disco and electro, his releases on the “Homebreakin” label have garnered him acclaim throughout the world. Recent hits like “Bro Chant” and “Man Juice” have only solidified his reputation as one of the most exciting new producers in the nufunk world.
ABOUT FUNKONNECTION: Some of the greasiest characters in the Bay Area have joined forces to change all that. Motion Potion, (he of the legendary Nickie’s “Whatdafunk” parties and SF Funk Festival), Tal M Klein (the nufunk producer whose Plastic Starfish album follows 4 killer recent funk Eps) and Malarkey (who single-handledly revitalized the North Bay funk scene with his “Juke Joynt” parties) have made a solemn pledge to the memory of James Brown to help his legacy live on.
Funkonnection will feature the artists working to bring the oldschool sounds of the ONE to the dance-floor with modern production. This “nufunk” universe is expanding by the day with artists from Europe (Kraak & Smaak, Dr Rubberfunk, Torpedo Boyz, Bonobo), South America (Quantic), Canada (Smalltown Djs, Wicked Lester, Neighbor) and the States (Fort Knox Five, Allgood Funk Alliance, Nikodemus, Ursula 1000) joining forces to rescue the funk from dollar-bin obscurity. Now the Bay Area, one of the funk’s seminal birthplaces will have its own monthly chance to celebrate this fusion of the old and the new at everyone’s favorite funky dance-club, Mighty. And so you know we’re serious, Funkonnection comes complete with the SF Funk Festival décor and free fried chicken served at show-time..

DETAILS: On February 29, a diverse range of musical and visual artists band together for a party so crazy that it could only happen every four years; “Pirates vs Klowns” – the Leap Day Leap. Featuring a costumed crowd enjoying 6 hours of live music, performance art, circus and cabaret performance, and even some huge DJ sets. The centerpiece of this feast for the senses will be the first SF appearance of 2008 by the indescribable 43-piece music/performance-art/dance ensemble, The Mutaytor. Other highlights include a debut duo set by breakbeat stars Uberzone & Bassbin Twins and a visit from UK dubstep wiz Kromestar. Adrian & the Mysterious D. and Big Dolla will host the “Bootie Pirate Mashup Room” in the front, while Antennae, Ripple & Boggle host “Full Melt” dubstep and acid crunk upstairs. Motion Potion, Victor Vega, Absurge, and Rocket of the Fringe hold down the eclectic funk, breaks, electro and live art downstairs. LA’s legendary Cirque Berzerk will be on-hand to show off their high-flying aerials in the main room.
The Mutaytor is part hip-grinding techno-retro-funk, part audience-interactive post-modern circus. The act takes elements of Parliament-Funkadelic, the Crystal Method, Underworld, and Blue Man Group and throws them directly at the audience as riotous surreal entertainment. With tons of fresh material and an emphasis on instrumental prowess (with 2 guitars, keys and bass joining the huge drum-line), their sound is tight, the show manic, the vibe all-inclusively friendly. There's nothing like a Mutaytor show; they are on stage, above the audience, IN the crowd. With their sonic redesign, recently showcased at their home in Black Rock City (punctuated by a burst courtesy of 2000 lbs of propane), it’s clear that The Mutaytor is a force to be reckoned with.
Uberzone is the brainchild of southern California native Q (named after the "gizmo" -loving James Bond character). Like his namesake, Q is a die-hard collector of all things electronic, and has been collecting electronic-music gear since his early teens. His early singles, "Botz" and "The Freaks", were critically acclaimed club tracks that established Q as one of the leading American producers of breakbeat music. His remixes of Sarah McLachlan, The Crystal Method and BT also established him as one of the biggest names in the American dance scene. Spin Magazine named Uberzone as one of the six producers to create "the biggest beats ever." Bassbin Twins were born in Los Angeles, moved to Belgium, and are now based in San Francisco. Started in 1992 simply because of a "love for the beats", they've recorded for Skint, Belgian Breaks, Southern Fried, and others, as well as their own numerous one off indpendent releases. A live Bassbin Twins show is a remix of all their favorite music. Their innovative tunes range from breaks to house to drum 'n bass. Anything and everything can get woven into the mix. Eclectic in nature, the connection lies in the unique rub they put on each track.
Adrian & the Mysterious D have spent the past 5 years as the West Coast’s leading champions of bootleg culture. Their wildly successful “Bootie” parties rip up SF twice a month, and have also touched down in LA, New York, Paris and China. A member of the Mutaytor and a solo DJ of wide acclaim, Motion Potion is known for his infusion of funk, rock, latin and pop themes into organic and electronic breakbeats. An-Ten-Nae uses a similar approach, but drops his hooks into downtempo drop breaks and dubstep. The Fringe Arts Collective has spent the past 3 years aiming to “bring culture to the counterculture” with live painting and music. Fringe DJs Big Dolla, Tim Dietz, Victor Vega and Absurge will be rocking the bassment.

Sometimes we don't notice the hidden gem right before our eyes and such is the case with Tal M Klein and Romanowski . San Francisco's top nufunk producers have been churning out quality funky beats for years but seldom gain much notice in their own hometown. On April 18, Tal celebrates the release of his uber-funky "Plastic Starfish" album, a record so chock full of breakbeats, guitar licks and clav hits that it could just as easily have come from Motown, Westbound or People. 2006 saw Romanowski release "Party in my Pants" which was the finest nufunk record ever to come out of San Francisco. On Aprtil 18 at Funkonnection, Tal will play in the main roomas Roman celebrates James Brown's birthday in the back with resident Motion Potion.
With 30 odd releases, 2 Mix CDs, a Breakspoll Award, his music used on Toyota car ads and the 'CSI' TV show, and a back catalogue being played by everyone from breakbeat dons the Plump DJs, freakout funksters The Cuban Brothers, and baltimore godfather Scottie B, Nick Thayer is no stranger to variety. With a full length artist album due this year one can only make vague gestures as to style or content, but one thing is for sure: 'pretty much what I expected' will not be a term that is bandied about.
Nick Thayer has performed everwhere from worldwide superclubs such as Fabric, Home, and Ministry of Sound through to dingy bars in far flung corners of Eastern Europe or North America. So what can you expect from Nick Thayer? 'The unexpected' is an answer often given in these situations, but not here. It would be too ironic. Rather, expect a musical version of top shelf liquor. Three times better than the house standard and it'll leave you feeling like you're the one worth six figures.

4:20 Motion Potion (Mutaytor/Fringe) bombs Boston - Free!
(events » nightlife)
Sunday, April 20, 2008 - 10:00 PM
"You can take the boy out of Boston, but you cant take Boston out the boy..."
On Sunday, 4:20 one of Boston's native sons returns home for a celebration of all things Funky. The Boston-born DJ/producer/and San Francisco tastemaker known as Motion Potion plays his first Boston show in over 5 years. A resident at Bonnaroo, Vegoose & Berkfest and live cohort of the Mutaytor, Parliament-Funkadelic and Rebirth Brass Band, MoPo is among the most eclectic and inventive live djs on earth. In just the past year he has shared bills with Cut Chemist, Afrika Bambaataa, Bassnectar, Freq Nasty, Icey, Fort Knox 5, Freestylers and Tipper. Mopo is known for sets that can run as long as 6 hours, seamlessly genre -bending soul, breaks, rock, world, and hip hop into a soulful stew that is the funk for the 21st Century. From 2001-2004 he was the resident DJ at the mishmash of fun known as Berkfest playing the defunct gem's final beats. For the past 4 years he has helped to coordinate the Fringe Arts Collective, Rednose District, and and Mutaytor efforts at Burning Man. But going home to his roots, the night will be all about the funk. Expect to hear the stuff you know morphed into something new.
The first beat drops at 10 and will not stop till 2. Yup, it's free!

DETAILS: Sunset Promotions and the Fringe, the team that has brought you such epic parties as “Freaksgiving” and the “Icebreakers Ball” team up again for their third annual twisted take on the annual Mexican holiday . It’s “FREQO DE MAYO 2008”at its new location, Temple Nightclub with an all-star cast of future world breaks, Latin, house, electro and mashups that includes tech-hop legend Tipper. NYC world-breakbeat pioneer Sabo (Sol Selectas-Turntables on the Hudson) will update the Latin sound while Toronto’s Phat Conductor and LA’s Ground Control provide a treatise on breakbeat. Midtempo acid crunk will throb its way in through Antennae and Mozaic. And for the first time ever, the entire Fringe DJ posse will appear under one roof, including electro kidz Absurge and Victor Vega, eclectic beatslingers Mycho Cocoa, Dylan “BLVD” Cahill and funk-mash-breaks killers Tim Dietz, Big Dolla, and MoPo.
A description of Tipper? What's the point? He never says a word anyway. Nobody knows anything about him, apart from his music. So how do we find out about this nearly translucent geezer from England? Go see him at a show and he'll be standing on stage looking half-bored, not moving nearly fast enough to be scratching like that, while he blows the speaker cones to pieces and leaves everyone in the crowd standing around with their jaws dropped. Try to catch up with him after his set and he's already gone back to the hotel for sleepy time. Hype and fluff about who he is and where he's been and what he's all about doesn't do justice to his compositions or the impact they make on those who hear it. So, we'll probably never know anything about him, apart from his music, and if you listen closely enough over time he hopes you'll understand everything he is trying to say.
The Phat Conductor is one of Canada's leading underground exports, holding it down since 1995 with gigs as far as Switzerland, the U.K, Burning Man, NY and the legendary Shambhala Music Festival in the rainforests on British Columbia. His diverse style covers all genres from Electro House, Techno, breakbeat, Hip-Hop, Dancehall, DnB & IDM/Glitch. No matter what the venue, The Phat Conductor can suit his style to the crowd and keep your dancefloor rocking. Throw loads of original tunes and the fact that he works with live video into the mix and you have a sure fire crowd pleaser.
Sabo production in the last four years has gained international recognition and brought him to DJ in countries like Brazil, Spain, Dominican Republic, Austria, Mexico, and Kosovo, as well as various cities in the US. He has six EP releases on his own label Sol*Selectas, two 12" releases on Wonderwheel Recordings, and a full length album on the way in '08 for Irma Records in Italy, with production partner Zeb. From Brazilian to Afrobeat, Disco to Reggae, Hip Hop to Dub, Miami Bass to House, Latin to Techno, Sabo is known to be locked into each style as if it were the only thing he's been spinning for the past 10 years, and he flows seamlessly from one genre to the next. He's been a special guest at Turntables on the Hudson parties for the last 5 years, is an instructor at the Scratch DJ Academy, and was nominated to URB magazine's Annual 'Next 100' in 2006.
MoPo (Motionpotion) is one of the country’s foremost purveyors of reinvented roots music, from nufunk to rocktronica to tech hop, MoPo takes the stuff you know and supercharges it. AnTenNae (Get Freaky) is an underground hero for his embrace of new styles including his own signature “acid crunk” style. Mozaic (Raindance) has long been known as a premier purveyor of cutting edge eclectic electronica. Ground Control has quietly pushed himself to the forefront of LA’s underground breakbeat scene.Victor Vega and Absurge are the Fringe crew’s resident electro and minimal experts, Big Dolla and Tim Dietz hold down the funk, breaks and mashups, while Mycho Cocoa and Dylan Cahill (drummer for local power trio BLVD) simply can’t be categorized. The Fringe is a collective of nearly 100 people dedicated to pushing evolutionary music on an unsuspecting public. For three years straight, the Fringe has hosted marathon soundsessions at the Burning Man Festival and has hosted numerous parties in the Bay Area to support their artistic habits. Fringe painters perform at most events and have shown off their work at various local art shows.

DETAILS: ‘A.Skillz’ is one of the world’s funkiest beatmeisters. His fierce production skills and turntable dexterity has seen him explode onto the scene, collaborating with hip-hop legends and making music for worldwide brands. At only 26 years old his incredible deck talents involve fusing funk, hip-hop and breaks with his unique style of scratching and mixing. His reputation as a true party rocker has won him prime-time slots across the as well as gigs around the world at major festivals and music industry.
In 2003 A.Skillz released his debut album “TrickaTechnology” alongside Finger Lickin's very own Krafty Kuts. The album was a nod towards musical influences like De La Soul, James Brown and Jurassic 5, true Finger Lickin' Funk that enlisted the talents of some of the world's best hip-hop and funk artists including Kurtis Blow, Real Elements and Ashley “Freakpower” Slater. February 2004 saw A.Skillz and Krafty Kuts team up on the TrickaTechnology Tour with live MC’s from the album playing shows all over the UK. The duo then went on to DJ together leaving audiences and dance floors astounded with their skills on four decks and four CDJ’s, playing at Glastonbury Festival, Pacha (Ibiza) and a live session for Steve Lamaq on BBC Radio 1. In October 2004 A.Skillz then embarked on his first solo tour of Australia which saw him play to sell out crowds in all major capital cities, gaining new fans and respect from fellow DJ’s along the way. He followed this by extensive gigs in the UK and a busy studio schedule producing music for Channel 4 (Talk Back), Renault (TV advert) and Sony Playstation (Gran Tourismo 4).
Since then, he’s had a mini-mix for Annie Mac that was voted best mini-mix of the year by Radio 1 listeners, beating industry heavyweights such as Basement Jaxx, Mylo and Scratch Perverts. He followed this with a series of remixes including The Fort Knox Five and a re-rub of his own track Simple Things. Besides a plethor aof singles and hot remixes, A.Skillz has seen his US notoriety explode due to a series of bootlegs, including reworks of the Beatles Strawberry Fields Forever and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
There are few people who have done more to support funky breakbeat music in the Bay Area than Seismic’s Murphstar, Sunset’s Motion Potion and LiveSessions AnTennae. Between them, the three have produced hundreds of parties featuring a who’s who of dance music legends and along the way have helped creted some new ones. In high demand for their skills on the decks, the three have never played the same bill and with A.Skillz already on the bill, the show is shaping up to be a barn burner.

BURNING MAN
This year should be as spectacular as ever at Burning Man. For those of you who are still sitting on the fence, I can't encourage you enough to GO. If you don't have a ticket, check Craigslist and Tribe as right now, there are doubtless folks trying to sell theirs. I've heard a lot about "Nobody's Going" this year, including some old favorites like the Space Cowboys and El Circo. But I would remind everyone that in the past, as beautiful things disappeared, other beautiful things rose up to be recognized. Lush, Sol System, and Xara are all great names from years past that have gone away, and so many wonderful camps have taken their place. Furthermore, this is a major year for a comeback of the Funk. My Funkonnection partner DJ Malarkey and I have organized TWO awesome funk parties at major camps (Wednesday at Nexus and Thursday at Cyphertown) and Plug4 - (they of LA's Root Down) are making their comeback as well. It all adds up to some great reasons for you to go THIS YEAR.

The Mutaytor w. Breakscience feat. Adam Deitch this Saturday at Mezzanine
(events » live music)
Saturday, May 16, 2009 - 9:00 PM
Six months after stealing the show at the sold out Sea of Dreams NYE party, the Mutaytor returns to San Francisco with a massive 30+ piece lineup and a bevy of fresh new music. Touring on the acclaim of their 2008 release Yelling Theatre in a Crowded Fire” the Mutaytor has grown from an electrified cabaret act into a rock-electronica monster. The songs on “Yelling Theatre” were their most elaborately crafted, instrument-packed and live-band optimized. Consequently, the show has grown accordingly from one with a musical experience to match the acts already substantial visual spectacle. Producer-composers Buck Down and Atom Smith have moved out from behind their laptops and taken positions behind guitar and keys respectively, and percussionist Brady Spindle moonlights on acoustic guitar now as well. With bassist John Avila (Oingo Boingo) turntablist Motion Potion, 3 drummers and a full horn section, the result is a musical output matched only by the energy of the visual team.
The Mutaytor fortifies this massive musical prowess with well-choreographed performances by dancers, aerialists, hoopers, contortionists and fire performers, many of whom are considered the cream of Los Angeles’s performance-art crop. The culmination of this transformation was realized at February’s sold-out “Art of Change Inaugural Ball” at LA’s Mayan Theatre, when a huge crowd delighted to the triumph of a brilliant album realized in a theatrical setting. The Mutaytor has become to modern music, what Aida was to opera.
Break Science is the culmination of a career of beat bending by its brainchild, Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee, who lends his keyboard soundscapes to Adam’s modern palate. Whether performing a DJ set with drums / programming or helming a live band, Break Science is club music in the vein of a “live mix tape,” blending live trip-hop, broken-beat, dub, drum & bass and hip-hop. Break Science takes Deitch’s hip-hop beats and flips them through drum&bass and a mesh of styles to form a live remix that pushes the boundaries of live electronic music. This is the future – where technique meets technology in a hybrid that only Adam Deitch could imagine.
