I saw some playa-gray socks two years ago before I went, but I had already bought a bunch of black ones, so I passed. I think they were at Target. I wore socks to protect my feet from my cheap sandals, but they probably help avoid playa foot also.

A friend told me there are some good springs near Bridgeport, north of Mono Lake, fairly close to the 395. But he also said there are lots of springs all along the route when it's next to the Sierras, so maybe get a published guide to California ...

I waited about 2 hours in 2006 but I got there at about 6 am Monday, before the office had opened. Last year we got there about 1 PM Monday and there was no line. I think generally the waits are short as long as the office is open when you start.

My friend recommends a place called Atomic Cycles in Van Nuys. They fix old bikes and sell repaired older bikes. They also do custom work that's probably not so cheap.
