Spent yesterday evening at the Vallejo Symphony's fundraising gala. Went in Renaissance garb with one of the guilds (St. George) to add atmosphere. That was fun 'cause people thought we were a hoot. What was surprisingly entertaining was the live auction. I had no idea people still had money! Somebody paid a shitload to sit in the orchestra while they played (I think it was $500.) Our Gloriana bid and won something grand...was it swimming with the dolphins? Or was that the Dauphin...? ... read more

A HIGHLY entertaining read, "The Dirt on Clean" takes the reader through time with respect to cleaning the body in the western world, for the most part. Interesting for Ren Faire participants (especially sans showers this year) are a few tid bits from the book below:

Walsingham suit consists of a doublet, Venetian hose, and a Scholar's gown. The Venetians are made of an exquisit silk double twill set on the bias for a slim, sleek look. Walsingham suit back of scholar's gown...Dog-gone, it's long! It's made of: outer fabric (black wool), lining (grey/black duppioni silk), and black piping. Eventually, the collar will be covered by silver fox, I believe. There are three types of trim at the bottom, all gimp/soutache and one that shows through to the grey lining.

Walsingham suit sleeve from behind...best view I have so far with my icky camera. Here you see the sleeves constructed and beaded. They are made of: outer fabric (cotton velvet on bias), foundation fabric (light-weight linen on straight grain), 1/4" cotton cording, lining (silk), piping at the wrists, "lace" trim in the "valleys" between the cording, and crystal beads for bling. Oh, and lacing strips to lace to the doublet. Kinda pretty...
