about me
Few artists provide an audience with a veritable bevy of audible delicacies that are dripping with irony, but laced with sincerity. Driven by melody and guitars, candy-coated with synths and creative production, one only need scratch the surface of Heartbreak Club's sound to find the cynical and self-deprecating, but ultimately empathetic, undercurrent that pervades Teddy Hernandez’s lyrics.
Indeed, few independent artists can substantiate such claims. Heartbreak Club however is an emotional headfuck teaming with credentials: The new EP ...lamecore, essentially a thinly veiled launching pad for the single “Bethanie”, is out now. ‘Bethanie’ has received healthy airplay on local, national and community radio; the ‘Bethanie’ video clip receiving extensive coverage on RAGE (ABCTV), YouTube et al, and both the EP and the vibrant stage show have been met with consistently positive reviews (e.g Drum Media, zines, The Punk Rock Show).
Coverage has not been limited to merely the music press, with the video clip of ‘Bethanie’ featured on the cover-CD of Australian PC User Magazine (March 2007, circulation 330,000). Heartbreak Club has an acquired wealth of touring experience, having played alongside national and international acts such as The Sleepy Jackson, Jonah Matranga, Faker, Bodyjar, Behind Crimson Eyes, The Devoted Few, Ground Components, Sekiden, Spod and Karnivool in supporting and festival (eg Strikeback) capacities, on top of their own interstate headline touring.
Despite the group’s insistence of being a rock band, Heartbreak Club fans often refer to the quartet as powerpop or lame-core. Irrespective of labels bestowed upon them, HBC continue to capture the hearts and minds of kids from the globe over.
HBC truly came together when Teddy, Sullo and Carter locked themselves into their studio (HBC H.Q) in late 2005 with Producer Luke Garfield (Lout) to record a quick EP, and to have it mastered by Rick O'Neil (U2, Faith No More etc.). …lamecore is available thru Reign Records.
Perhaps it is Heartbreak Club’s ability to mock and embrace the emotional conventions of western-world youth, mainly through the self-deprecating eyes of Teddy, that gives the outfit universality not encountered with many rock outfits. Heavily influenced by The Get Up Kids, Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, Green Day, The New Amsterdams, Zolof the Rock 'n' Roll Destroyer, Smashing Pumpkins, The Pixies, Blink 182, Weezer and Dido, it’s evident Heartbreak Club are understudies to popular but genuine outfits from where their own “candy-coated substance” is born. They are currently in pre-production of their debut album.
