</a>
<div>Boris Yeltsin died of heart failure at the age of 76.
For the first time I’m saddened by death of a politician (not human being). And although his real death as a politician has happened about 10 years ago, for me he will always be the leader who rallied the country to fight off military coup in 1991, ended the Soviet Union and founded an independent Russia. He then positioned himself to become Russia's first president, committed to democracy, constitutionalism and a market economy.

What was your perception of him?

<div>to see my friend Alex. I must have spent less than 3 hours there. When I finally left and stepped outside the grim walls with barbwire I saw the sun rolling down behind ugly little hills covered with dull, brown grass. It was the best view I've seen in my life!
Stop for a moment, drop what you are doing and take a moment to enjoy and appreciate things you've come to take for granted. Even during your darkest moments when you think you got nothing going for you...you are blessed with the most precious of gifts that so many would give everything for - FREEDOM! </div>

Choices (inspiring story)

<div>John is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"
He was a natural motivator.
If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, "I don't get it!
You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"
He replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or ... you can choose to be in a bad mood,
I choose to be in a good mood."
Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.
Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or... I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.
"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested.
"Yes, it is," he said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood.
You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life."
I reflected on what he said. Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.
After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back.
I saw him about six months after the accident.
When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins...Wanna see my scars?"
I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.
"The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter," he replied. "Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or...I could choose to die. I chose to live."
"Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked.
He continued, "..the paramedics were great.
They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'. I knew I needed to take action."
"What did you do?" I asked.
"Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said John.
"She asked if I was allergic to anything 'Yes, I replied.' The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity'."
Over their laughter, I told them, "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."
He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude... I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.
Attitude, after all, is everything.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34.
After all today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.
You have two choices now:
1. Forget about this
2. Tell it to the people you care about.
You know the choice I made.

Do you have a story?
I wanna hear it!!!!!!

<div>So, as many of you may know, I recently returned from my trip to Europe that took me to Moscow, Kiev, Prague and Berlin. I've been getting a lot of questions about it and I decided to have a party to show the pics and tell the story, and most importantly to reconnect with all my friends.
Please join me next Sunday, August 6, 6 pm at my place in UTC. Send me a PM and I'll give you directions. I'll have some drinks and snacks, but feel free to bring anything you want to share.
I'm looking forward to see every one of you!!!

1. Some time this June is the 25th anniversary of my graduation from school and the 20th anniversary of my graduation from Moscow State University. I studied Japanese economy, culture and language and graduated with dual degree as economist and Japanese language interpreter. I cooperated with KGB on one assignment that required my Japanese language skills. Back then I was 6”3, had blond curly hair, blue eyes and 0 body fat…just kidding!
2. I came to this country in 1991 to go to grad school. I lived in Los Angeles until 1996 and then moved to San Diego. LA period of my life was very hard financially and very eventful. I witnessed a 7.2 Northridge earthquake, LA riots; I was shot during robbery attempt. In 2000 I got my MBA in finance.
3. I often wonder, but never regret, about the choices I made in life. I left Russia full of drastic changes and once in a lifetime opportunities. By the time I went back few years later some of my friends were millionaires and some were dead.
4. I’m not money motivated – people in my job (investments analyst) make 2-3 times more than what I make. But I work in a house on the beach, I don’t stress out at work and I’m pretty much my own boss (75% of the time my real boss is out of the office).
5. The worst day of my life was when my father died. I hate myself for 2 things – I was not there to take care of him (he was in Russia) and it hurt more when a woman I loved left me. From what my mother was telling me I knew that my father was sick, but I had no idea how serious it was. She was trying to protect me and was hiding the truth from me. I don’t hold it against her…At some point I’ll have to go back to Russia to take care of her, I’m not letting the same thing happen again.
6. There are not many things I’m afraid of – death doesn’t scare me for example. Is it form the lack of appreciation of all wonderful things I have or just plain stupid? I don’t know…But one thing is just dreadful for me – to become sick and helpless, unable to take care of myself. I can’t bear a thought of becoming a burden on somebody…
7. I truly loved 2 women in my life. One was my wife and a mother of my son. The other one was the reason I left them. When she broke up with me I was heart broken to the point of being on the verge of suicide. Thanks to my wonderful friends from Burner community I’m over it now. I’m grateful to all of you for saving my life, my sanity and all the love you bestowed upon me. I am very thankful to my ex-wife for remaining my friend in spite of everything I put her through. My son is 9 now, his name is Nicky (ask me about a story behind his name), he’s totally adorable (took after his father, I guess) and I love him. I don’t think I’m a good dad – despite all the time I spend with him I get bored fast…so egotistical of me, I know…
8. I have terrible luck with cars, and incredible luck surviving car crashes. Out of 5 cars I owned since moving to San Diego 4 were involved in an accident, 3 of which resulted in total loss. I was lucky to walk away from all of them with just one scratch on my finger. I cut my finger on a piece of a door glass when I was crawling out of my car that flipped over few times. (that story is too long and unbelievable for this blog, but definitely worth hearing)…
9. I’ve come a long way from an arrogant yet sad snob I used to be, but I’m far from being a person I want to be. 3 things that bother me most are my lack of drive and excitement about life, selfishness and rudeness…sometimes you’ll hear most stupid and offensive things come out of my mouth. I most certainly don’t intend them to be that way and I apologize to all of you for things I’ve said or will say. I know its not an excuse and I’m working on it, trust me!
10. Its been my conviction for a while that I’m not gonna live much past 60 if at all, so I’m trying to live to the fullest, cramping as many things as I can in every day I’m blessed with. I sleep 5-6 hours per day.

Ok, its more than 8 things, but I was tagged 3 times, so I added 1 item for every tag after the 1st one.
I tag Jen, Justin, Beene, McKenzie, Zoey, Robot, Fox, Kiwi. You'll get PMs from me.

Peace and Love,

Victory Day

<div>Victory Day is the only Soviet era holiday that has not lost its significance to me. This is the day when I’m especially proud to be Russian.
For those who doesn’t know, Victory Day marks the capitulation of Nazi forces to the Soviet Union and other principal Allied nations in Berlin on May 8, 1945. Russia celebrates a day later because, although the German army surrendered on May 8, it was not until May 9 that the final surrender ceremony took place in Berlin.
Victory Day is a holiday filled with joy, pride, and grief as well. My homeland’s triumph in that war came at an enormous cost, with some 27 million lives lost. Let's remember the cost and the importance of this Victory for all people in the world. Victory Day truly is a holiday we all share, a common holiday for the peoples of Russia, European countries, USA and all other nations. The memory of this day gives special meaning to our modern peacetime life. Everything we are used to taking for granted is so fragile and precious. World peace is ours to protect and preserve…it is our common responsibility! Lets not forget about that!!

<div>So its been 6 month since I joined the Tribe. A little more than a year since changes in my life brought me to the burner community. And its been a great year! No, its been a fucking awesome year!!! But somewhere amid the glamour of meeting beautiful people, jumping from one party to the next, having all kinds of fun I forgot about important things I wanted to do, things I meant by the phrase “helping people, making the world a better place” in my profile. In the last couple of months I have done nothing besides seeking pleasure for myself. Its time for me to get back on track. And I wanna start right here, in my community of friends and return the love that was so generously bestowed on me. I am offering free help in the field of finances to anybody in need of financial advice.
I realize it is not the most important thing on most burners’ minds, but for instance everybody needs to file tax returns (there is only one month left until the deadline).
Im going to post about this in several tribes and give a bit more info about my background and expertise.
Hope to hear from you...

Peace and Love,

<div>So I crashed my second Subaru in 8 months..and though I don't think much about it, every now and then in my mind I go back to the events of that day asking myself WTF happened? And I finally figured it out - I was driving the way those cars were not designed for...So now I got myself a fast enough car to really do something stupid in!</div>

Snow season continues - New Years Hoidays

    </a>
<div>Spashkas were on a mission to kick some major butt in SF at “The Sea of Dreams”-AnonSalon party. After 2 days and nights of skiing/boarding (it actually was more like swimming) in Tahoe it started snowing like crazy the morning of 12/31. We got so stuck on HWY 50 trying to get out of So.Lake Tahoe its unbelievable. My car was the first one to give up…We decided to punish her later (that we did – see the pix) and jump started the byach, but turned back to So.Lake Tahoe. Instead of going to SF we ended up partying in Tahoe with some friends. Still kicked so much ass that were kicked out of the condo the following day. But NY morning, after resting for just coupla hours we hit the slopes in Heavenly and it was heavenly indeed! It was free (we bummed lift tix from some peeps), it was lots of snow and fun and it was rewarding! The mountain was on standby and could close any time…we came back twice and finally got on the lift. That day Alex made a major progress on snowboard after a little tip from me. I was (on skis) giving lesson to a friend who begged us to take her with us. She had a major breakthrough too, how cool was that?!!
Driving from Tahoe was a bit of a challenge (it was white and fluffy, aka snow) - nothing we couldn't handle, but still...took us about 20 hours to get to SD, I drove all night and went straight to work.We put on and took off snow chains 5 times, turned back twice due to road conditions, tried 3 different routes, totaled 1 car (mine, overdid on spanking it for bad behavior), went through 2 rent a car places and 1 airport, but I made it! So my holiday was a blast!!!

    </a>
<div>I opened mine by getting on snowboard! My cousin gave me my first lesson…
Feels so awkward to move downhill with your back first. Even worse facing downhill, your board across the slope, scratching off thin layer of snow…skiers looking at you with a hint of reproach in their eyes. Feels weird to be on the other side of the barricade for a change! But we all need it - learn others’ point of view, learn to be tolerant and most importantly, learn how to have fun TOGETHER!
