11 ETZNAB: Viva Oaxaca!

   Wed, November 22, 2006 - 3:25 PM
Not long ago, I, like many other people throughout the world, responded to a plea to the world community to bear witness to the political struggle taking place in Oaxaca, Mexico. The plea came from an assembly of Oaxacan citizens who are engaged in a power struggle with government at both the state and federal level. What began as an legal strike by schoolteachers in Oaxaca has escalated to a conflict of national and international significance.

November 20, 2006 was both a New Moon and the ninety-sixth anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. The painting you see here was co-created by Teresa Wild and I in honor of the people of Oaxaca who are endeavouring to bring about peaceful social change in the face of militant government oppression.
