I have had a lot of time on my hands recently and have had the opportunity to see quite a bit of movies...so yeah, why not recommend something to you.......so I will try to give a little bit of critic about the movie along with the trailer from youtube.com.. these will not be in any particular order..I will add more movies as time goes by, so stay tuned!! These are movies that I have just recently viewed.
The Diary of a Mad Black Woman ~ starring Tyler Perry
www.youtube.com/watch
I believe this is Tyler's first movie...I really enjoyed this one! It is alot of fun. When I first saw it was surprised by the gimmick of a man dressing up as a woman, not alot of people can do this and actually be funny, but Tyler has accomplished it. There are some corny parts, slow times, but over all, worth the popcorn and beer that you will enjoy with it.
The Last Winter
www.youtube.com/watch
I was really surprised at this one, I had seen the cover and was a little reluctant to check it out. The last thing I need to see is another violent, want to be horror film. Really dark and clever, very little special effects, the plot was good without it, tho' effective when needing to allow you to see the unexplainable. Set in Alaska, a group tries to coupe with being out in the middle of nowhere when they become overwhelmed by odd behavior and a native American folklore story of a demonic relation.
Wristcutters: A Love Story
www.youtube.com/watch
With the recommendation from a very nervous person, I took a chance on this film. In fact I was talking to a friend who is clinically depressed and also had tried to commit suicide, I was surprised that she liked it. I liked this movie for it's quirky-ness and darkness. With a chuckle here with the never ending hole in the car were things disappear, to the appearance of Tom Waits. Also with a few twists of where the characters end up after committing suicide. For me the only draw back is the ending..I would have expected something unexpected to happen to the main characters, but overall I do recommend this one..
Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice
www.youtube.com/watch
Jury still out on this one. When I was curious enough about it after passing it a few times, the woman that was checking me out at the counter had a smirk, and I think I got the smirk after watching this movie. Made in 1969, it is worth seeing for the lingo, fashion, and last but not least, the sexual revolution of the era story, which left me asking for more. If I could rate this movie, hmmm, B- or C+. It is worth seeing for Natalie Wood, she is a good actress, but not for the very hairy Elliot Gould.
Where the Wild Things Are
www.youtube.com/watch
I highly recommend this movie. Very loosely based on the childrens book..and I suggest do not bring children under 10 or 12. Really meant for young adults and adults. It really reminded me of my childhood. The effects and acting are excellent and ever so slightly dark. The music is great and I just loved this movie.
The Addiction ~ Starring Lili Taylor and Christopher Walken
www.youtube.com/watch
Shot in black and white, this has to be one of the best vampire movies that I have seen in a while. A student-Lili Taylor finds herself pulled into the dark side of the city guided by Christopher Walken.
I shot Andy Warhol ~ starring Lili Taylor
www.youtube.com/watch
Based on Valerie Solanas' life, and also her book, Scum Manifesto..it accounts her shooting Andy Warhol. I also recommend picking up a copy of Scum Manifesto, very interesting. I really liked this movie..
Little Britain series
www.youtube.com/watch
One of my favorite British comedies, it is a series of sketches that is narrated by Tom Baker (better known at Dr. Who). From Computer says no to Vicky Pollard, I found myself laughing at the not so pc way at looking at people.
The Mighty Boosh series
www.youtube.com/watch
One of the more unusual British comedies that I have watched..I found it odd and dark..often chuckling or with my jaw dropped with confusion and glazed eyes, I continued watching, like passing a car wreck.
Anna Lacusta~Starring Eartha Kitt
www.youtube.com/watch
In this clip, it isn't the official trailer. Worth seeing if you like a dark story of Anna and her struggle to find herself. Also starring Sammy Davis Jr. Anna is a prostitute taken in by her family and sold to a man for marriage. She finds herself trying to be the daughter that her father always wanted her to be and living the life to stay alive.
Pulp~starring Michael Caine
www.youtube.com/watch
Well, Pulp was a movie that I randomly rented, not knowing anything about it. I was pleasantly surprised, especially with appearance of Mickey Rooney in it. If you enjoy light entertainment and especially if you are a fan of dark humor, then this is a must.
Paranormal Activity
www.youtube.com/watch
I saw this on Friday, very limited release. No surprises, especially if you have been around the block when it comes to horror movies. It was compared to Blair Witch Project by a local critic..to be honest, Blair Witch was a little more frightening compared to this movie, but I didn't think Blair witch was that scary!! What I did like about it was the special effects in it, but I could tell there was acting involved and the effects with the humans gave it away. along with the ending credits stating that it was a fictitious account. I did tense up a few times but nothing to make me jump, and if there was no Blair Witch Project, I would possibly be a little scared. I heard a conversation about this today at a coffee shop, these two gentlemen were saying they were terrified and would never see another horror movie again, give me a break!! I have seen much scarier movies than this. I do recommend this if you are interested in fictional paranormal activity, wait till it gets to a dollar theater or possibly see it on cable.. It is a little creepy and like I say. has some good special effects
The Invention of Lying
www.youtube.com/watch
If you are a fan of British humor and/or a fan of Ricky Gervais, I recommend this. Not as good as Ghost Town..but worth the money. I would say it's a chuckle movie. It takes a shot at life in general, which includes, in my opinion, how we have not been able to really tell the truth to anyone, and shots at religion.
Zombieland
www.youtube.com/watch
I knew when I went and saw this it would be funny..but I didn't expect it to be as funny as it is. I really like movies that surprise me for the good, even though you go into it expecting it to be funny. The first bit of it was a bit gory, but serves it's purpose. Stay for after the credits for a bit of a surprise with Woody Harrelson and the surprise actor that appears in the movie pretending to be a zombie in Hollywood to survive. Great popcorn movie!! Sometimes I think this would almost be turned into a video game.
Sunshine Cleaning
www.youtube.com/watch
Just rented this..a little disappointed but had a great message! Had it's chuckle moments, with many dry moments...
