Introduction to the Indian Martial Art – Kalarippayattu (events » sports / rec) Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 2:00 PM 154 RSVPs ~An Introduction to the Indian Martial Art – Kalarippayattu~

When : Saturday & Sunday 2pm – 4pm, December 1 & 2, 2007

Where: Vara Healing Arts, Berkeley – 850 Talbot Avenue in Albany off of Solano

Cost: $70 per person both days (Advanced Registration Required at 510-526-9642)

About the course: Kalarippayattu, literally meaning “martial practice inside a school,” has deep roots in Ayurveda and Yoga and has also contributed to the traditional art and dance forms of Kerala, India. Acknowledged to be the oldest of all martial arts, it is a comprehensive discipline with an emphasis on:

- Rigorous physical training cultivating a single-pointed focus and physical well-being
- Effective self-defense, armed and unarmed
- Pressure point techniques, known as Marma, used for healing or self-defense
- Philosophy based on the Vedas, India’s ancient texts
- Unique massage system related to Ayurveda for treatment of ailments and injuries

The introductory course will focus on learning the foundations of this martial art. Students will practice forms which teach the core concepts of the art. Training will be physically demanding, and accessible to students of all fitness levels.

About the teacher: Parag Mody has studied and taught various Japanese and Chinese martial arts for almost 20 years, and has been focusing exclusively on Kalarippayattu for the last six years. He is a student of C. Mohammed Sherif, whose family hails from a lineage of Kalarippayattu teachers. Parag also teaches Hatha Yoga.

Join us for a wonderful, intimate evening with Bansuri flute master Deepak Ram. Deepak is an incredibly versatile artist who is well known for his evocative performances in traditional North Indian classical music, his collaborations with musicians of other genres, his innovative compositions and for his excellence as a teacher. Deepak Rams's first love is North Indian classical music. Indeed, he is an accomplished soloist. He is a delightful and captivating performer, combining technical mastery with personal charm.

Deepak began his formal training in bansuri and tabla under Sri Jeram Bhana in South Africa in 1975. Two years later he was off to Mumbai, India to study flute under the late Sri Suryakant Limaye (Indias's master flute maker); he simultaneously spent a short time under flautist, Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao. Deepak has six solo albums to his credit and as a session musician can be heard on over twenty five albums. His bansuri can also be heard on movie soundtracks, such as The Fast And The Furious, Matrix Revolutions, Stealth, India-Kingdom of the Tiger and the Indian film, Maya.

We will use forward bends and twists to prepare for a sweet Pranayama practice. Open to students of all practices that are seasoned beginners to advanced.

Maty Ezraty was the original founder of Yoga Works in Santa Monica California and directed the Teacher Training Program there for over 16 years. Maty wrote the Yoga Journal Asana Column in 2001. She is known for her joyful, engaging and determined apporach to teaching correct form. Teaching since 1985 Maty has been a student of many senior Iyengar teachers which reflects in her practice and how she teaches.

Chuck Miller has been practicing yoga earnestly since 1971 and finally learned Ashtanga Yoga from Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois in 1980. Chuck enjoys teaching with a focus on the wholistic nature of Ashtanga Yoga, teaching it as both a philosophical system as well as a strong practical method. Chuck is known for his gentle but deliberate hands-on adjustments which are both reassuring and challenging.
