Heading to Thailand
Mon, December 24, 2007 - 11:38 AMWe'll be heading to two areas I haven't been to; the Similian Islands and Chang Mai. The first time I was in Thailand was 2 weeks after the Tsunami so we didn't get a chance to go the the west coast due to the devastation and influx of volunteers. It will be nice to see some of the region.
Let me know if you have any suggestions for these areas of places to stay or things to do, off the beaten path. We may make it to Pai for a day or two as well.
Blessings on this winter holiday. May you find warmth, community and peace.

yay Thailand!
I'm not sure if it's the beaten path or not, as I've only been to Thailand the once, but~ I went to a beautiful temple in Chiang Mai called Doi Suthep (unsure of spelling).
And, my friend says the "unicorn house" in Pai is phenomenal. Have fun! ^_^ |

Chiang Mai: I lived there for 3 months in nursing school. I loved that city. Went back last year, and still loved it. Let me know if you need a place to stay, I can recommend a couple places.
Definitely see Doi Suthep and the Queen's Gardens at the Royal family's winter palace. Do the hike all the way up the hill at the Palace to the reservoir. It was beautiful when I was there. Eat at the Riverside Restaurant. Night Market goes without saying. Do the elephant camp thing. It's super touristy, but they are beautiful, intelligent, and graceful creatures who need to be supported. They are generally very well cared for in the camps, and are an important part of Thai heritage. Elephants used to do all the work of heavy machinery there, and now that they've been replaced, they have nothing better to do than play 'soccer'. Check out every single temple you can find. There's some crazy temple with roof detailing that's made out of aluminum, but I can't remember where it is. There's a swiss restaurant up on a hill - I think it's called Galae or something. Ask around for the swiss place with all the flowers - eat there, the flower arrangements are awesome and the view is really great. Don't miss the mall. It's such a caricature of western commercialism - the crowded shops all selling the same thing, the crazy mannequins, the 'let's scare the tourists' fried bugs shop... I thought it all hysterical, but I suppose it could be sad, too. Get someone to tell you about the history of Old Chiang Mai. It's been taken over by several civilizations. The wall that's visible in spots around the old city is some thousand years old or something like that. Let me know how the Similan Islands are, I'd love to go back! |

Hey Chels.
I'm one of the friends mentioned above. I am likely heading to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and other area north before i meet Kara and others down south for some diving and beach fun. Can you tell us about places to stay and elephant tours? I'm looking into them now in Lampang. |
