about me
Hi everyone. My name is Reason or Megan or whatever you think suits me best!

I started poi as a hobby 10 years ago but was never really serious about it and didn’t practice consistently. I dropped it for a while and didn’t start to seriously get into fire dancing until 2007. I’ve been performing with fire semi-consistently for 2 years. I use poi, palms, orb, and am looking to expand beyond that to whatever tools might interest me next.

Fire dancing is purely an extra activity for me. I work full time and am also going to graduate school full-time. I do not have the time to commit to steady practices nor am I in a financial position to pay for classes at this time. I truly enjoy getting together when I can with like-minded people to help each other expand our skills.

I find fun and peace in fire dancing. For me, it is an art and not a business. I have been paid to perform and occasionally get offers although I do not market myself or proclaim to be a professional or advanced in any way. I have very little dance training and just enjoy the way that fire makes me move and feel. I am certainly not opposed to accepting donations for performances or charging a minimal fee for shows when appropriate to cover the costs of fire permits, insurance, travel, fuel, etc. I do not believe however that this beautiful art should be financially unattainable for those seeking to learn or enjoy.

On a serious note, I am an advocate of safety. I don’t know everything there is to know about fire safety and I certainly have made my own mistakes. I just hope that the individuals I associate with are conscious of their surroundings and this is especially true in an environment where there are spectators that are counting on performers to know what they are doing. I have been known to speak up when I see unsafe conditions such as people that bring their lit fire tools around white gas, leaving the lids off of their white gas containers, smoking around the fuel station, performing without a Safety, are a Safety that is preoccupied with other things and not keeping their eye on the person who is counting on them, using their tools in a manner that has yet to be thoroughly practiced in a controlled environment, etc.. If I say anything to you, please do not take it as arrogance on my part. I believe it’s all of our responsibility to look out for one another and I would hope the same from you if you see me doing something unsafe.

I’m looking forward to continuing to be an active member of the Fire Community here in Sacramento!
