about me
A "pro" belly dancer since the age of one.
I worked many of the classic night clubs and restaurants from childhood to adulthood including the original "Sirocco," "The Paradise Oriental Restaurant," "Sagapo," "The Green Valley" and the "Aziza Club" in NYC and the "Averof" in Boston and many others. I was a regular guest for seven years on the "Turkish Voice" T.V. program that broadcast in the NorthEast and in Ankara, Turkey and was produced by Farouk Fenik, the head of Turkish Tourism and Airlines in NYC. I've been accompanied since childhood by many of the greatest musicians in the world of belly dance including recording artists "Baba" Ajdin Aslan, oud, Anesto Athanasou, Bouzuki, Freddy Elias, violin, Harry Bedrosian, oud and Mitch Kaltsounas, drum, to name a few. My mother, Johanna, was a "Greektown" NYC dancer and dance company director of the "Oasis Ballet" in the heyday and my father was Middle Eastern recording artist/composer/actor Samir Al-Tawil. I've traveled and performed all over the U.S. I am of Lebanese/Syrian Arab and Armenian descent and American (Cherokee and Osage Indian, Celtic, British, and French Gypsy.) My mother Johanna was the first dancer from Greektown NYC to have a dance company ("Johanna's Oasis Ballet"), to be featured in an article in "Dance" magazine with her husband at the time "Turhan" and was the first dancer in Greektown NYC to dance with multiple veils, play "Kashik," dance with a fire pot on her head, play on patrons water glasses with her cymbals, and wear a "scarf" skirt, her own design, which she marketed to many dancers as a costumer. Her dance pupil Aiyupa was the first in Greektown NYC to dance with a sword, a routine which Johanna created for her with input from Ajdin Aslan, her longtime business associate and member of "Oasis." After Aiyupa's retirement, Johanna became known for the sword dance at venues all over the country including Greektown, Chicago. My specialties include authentic Middle Eastern "Martial" type sword dance, Black Sea fire dance "Laz," "Karsilama," classic belly dance, veil, and a variety of line dances from the Arabic, Turkish and Greek tradition including "Dabke," "Syrto-Ciftelli," "Zembekiko," and "Kasop/Hasopiko/Hora/Kazatsky." I also perform a retro "Burlesque" act with singing and comedy as my alter ego, "Zsa Zsa Gabber," which is actually a tribute to the history of American "show business" culture from the 1890's through the "Golden Age" of "Variety" in the 50's and 60's. As a jazz singer I have performed with some of the original members of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and been accompanied by musicians who played for Judy Garland. As a jazz dancer I have performed with the "Straw Hatters Dixieland Band" and the "Fat Sam Band."

Wow, cool Anthea! My Dad Samir Al-Tawil was still alive in the 80's. (Well-he's an "international man of mystery" and may not be dead actually-but I believe he probably is according to some sources I interviewed recently). Ya never know, Salina ma...

"Sahara City" Nightclub, Egypt
(in Belly Dance Legacy)
Well, I enjoyed so much the bio of Norma Warah's mentor Princess Madiha. Ironically, I just heard the latest about the "Sahara City" night club Madiha performed in many years ago. When my Dad Samir Al-Tawil was teaching at the University in Cairo ...

Prince Obeid Turjoman of Saudi Arabia, a close friend of my mother and father, taught my mother the sword dance "Al Ard" which I do today in one of my Arabic acts. (The Prince even accompanied her on Oud at a banquet he threw in her honor for the...

Butterfly wings lady is not oriental. It's Loie Fuller an early "modern" dancer in the craze around the time it was fluid looking-Isadora Duncan era-pre-Martha Graham "angular" looking "modern."
Victorian society would have never allowed reveal... read more discussion post on Fri, May 9, 2008 - 10:50 AM
I am proud to announce that I was included in the research project "Armenian in World Dance" by the State Museum of Art and Literature in Yerevan, Armenia. There will be a companion book published with my bio and reminiscences about my dance career and life and the special impact it has had on me through my ethnic identity.

Ah! This is what I'm up to besides working on my new costumes! Got my hands in dirt yesterday and it felt so good. Planted these little beauties in some pots I got marked down last Fall. Yellow and one blue. Clay pot we already had and Johanna put her Mother's Day begonia in that one. What a blast. Celebrated it early! Mother's Day founded by a lady in West "By God" Virginia. They don't much like to tell about her on the news. West Virginia the "step child" of America. (Undeservedly!)

My friend Bill took some photos of me outside in the lovely Springtime! My eyes have been itching a little from allergies, but I don't think it shows too much!

Still working on costumes (sewing is tedious hard work, never underestimate that if you don't do it). About done on two and will be ready to roll. The coin/paillette belt in this photo will be in a black and gold outfit with "Persian Lace" type skirt. Looked at a used car yesterday, an Escort station wagon. Used to have one-need ... read more

It is almost done. Worked on it last night while listening to a vintage 50's album "Hits from Guru Dutt." Songs are from Indian Cinema directed by a fellow named Guru Dutt. The songs are fantastic!
Two years ago, the week of my birthday, I found my beautiful sister Renee' Bushong through a miracle involving Morocco, Eddie Kochak and the unbelievable maze of belly dance history that has enveloped my life like a spiderweb. Renee' and I were entangled together in this web.
