"Armenian in World Dance"
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 10:09 AMWhen I was approached, I so wanted to give credit to my mother and father and their musical talent and careers. The researcher stopped me and said, "I would love to really know more about you!" So I gave him my all.
I shared my life in dance which started professionally at the age of one in 1969, took him through some of my experiences with our music and culture, and related my love for not just the music but our romantic and passionate people. I related to him what it was like to be a dancer deep in the heart of the "Immigrant Experience" and the special bond that the peoples of the Near and Middle East formed together in this country. I also told him that my return to belly dancing after a break for a time in the 1990's helped me to heal a devastating illness that crippled me for a time.
The researcher Artsvi Bakhchinyan, was very pleased. He said he had spoken to a lot of people, but that I was the only one who "could provide any details."
Look for my "youtube video" in the next few weeks or so.
The photo above is me at age six upon return to NYC after a tour out of town. I had been dancing since age one and playing zil since age two. At this time I began a seven year run on Turkish Television.

Romantic and passionate people
Oh, yes, I can vouch for that! Our dear friend and neighbor is Armenian, & when he & his young wife moved in, our sleepy neighborhood of reserved anglo-americans (except for a couple of us latinas) suddenly awoke to what it really means to be neighborly! This boy of a 50 yr old just knocked on our door the day they moved in, coffee in hand, & walked into our hearts as if we were old friends. He is the life of the party, gregarious and generous, a playmate to all the neighborhood kids, a born romantic with his wife, and lives with all his heart. He reminds me of when I was a kid & my spanish parents had all their friends over for food & music all the time. One can never forget in his presence that life is good. :-)
And I just love that picture of you, I hope you have it framed! |

Thank You Again!
The photo was taken in a series in NYC, this one I got with the slug underneath and was publicity (8X10)-got a box full-never framed it, though. Too much moving around! The other photos in this same outfit we got in a much larger size and was in my "portfolio." They show different dance moves, even floor work. I hope Johanna and I will finally write our book one day and I can share those as well.
Aember, your Armenian friend is exactly the type I grew up with in the Belly Dance culture. Hospitality, friendliness, "joie de vive" for life. I miss that in my life now, but know that I will "come home" again really soon. Will let everyone know when the Armenian book comes out. Sounds wonderful. He spoke to dancers in other "genres" like ballet as well. |

Ah, Eddie! Ah, Hagopian!
Thanks Astrid! Great musicians! Never met Hagopian but Eddie's an old friend of the family. He and Haki Obadia did Johanna's "charts" for the Oriental duo act she created for she and her husband Bill back in the early 60's-became the Oasis Ballet.
I was dancing at home last night to Eddie's first Strictly Belly Dancing record. Great energy-wakes me up! And that was when they had dancers in mind when they made records. Great tempo changes-variety of moods-and big finishes for great spins! Ah, I love it! A full spectrum for the dance artist! |

Mishaal, my teacher, introduced me to these fabulous musicians. We sometimes have 1970ies style bellydance events, and I actually got lucky one day and found an old Kochak CD at Tower records store for 5 $ in the bargain grab box. ; ) I have 2 Kef Time CDs of Hagopian.
