Perhaps the strand that broke was laid tighter than the other two? In a low stretch rope it might not stretch enough to allow the other two strands to share the load before it broke. It seems more likely that it was the other two strands that save...

I haven't found a reference for it - with the loose outer bights it looks very Chinese and I only have a couple of Chinese knotting books to hand.

Well something I've been pondering for a few months... when I turn the radio on during my commute the rock channels don't seem to be playing music at all - just ads and inane DJ prattle. But when I'm driving home from a club in the wee small hours or late for work in the morning (events that are totally unrelated of course) there's plenty of rock music all over the dial.
