about me
Recently I've come to realize the primacy of place, and the value in "keeping it local." The economic structures and systems of survival we depend on need to be re-designed to provide self-sufficiency and sustainability, for the essentials of life - including culture and spirituality - using what is available in ones own biotic community and geographic region. Mankind has been living too long as if it were above the laws of nature, expanding civilization beyond its natural limitations. The sooner the blundering control systems of authority get out of the way and let the natural balance and order of the wild be re-established the better.

Max Cafard on Daoism:

"Laozi was the mythic "Old Sage" of ancient China. We're not sure whether he actually existed but we do know that he founded Daoist philosophy. His legendary DAODEJING, the "Classic of the Way and its Power," is a subtle treatise that radically challenges our views of everything--including ourselves, nature and the world around us. I like to call it "The Anarchist Prince," for just as Machiavelli's Prince is a manual for rulers who wish to master the art of ruling, La... read more

In America there is so much talk of freedom and liberty from both the left and right, but both sides seem to mean different things when they say it. There are lots of people whose idea of freedom is only the freedom to attempt to insulate yourself from the world around you and your responsibility to it. Any kind of regulatory attempt made to curb ecologically or otherwise destructive behavior is seen as an outrageous infringment on personal liberty. No one wants to be told what to do by anyon... read more

"The Oxford English Dictionary has it this way:

Of animals - not tame, undomesticated, unruly.

Of plants - not cultivated.

Of land - uninhabited, uncultivated.

Of foodcrops - produced or yielded without cultivation.

Of societies - uncivilized, rude, resisting constituted government.

Of individuals - unrestrained, insubordinate, licentious, dissolute, loose. 'Wild and wanton widowes' - 1614.

Of behavior - violent, destructive, cruel, unruly.

Of behavior - artless, free... read more

Here is the essay "Notes Towards a Neo-Luddite Manifesto" by Chellis Glendinning:

"Most students of European history dismiss the Luddites of 19th century England as 'reckless machine-smashers' and 'vandals' worthy of mention only for their daring tactics. Probing beyond this interpretation, though, we find a complex, thoughtful, and little-understood social movement whose roots lay in a clash between two worldviews.
The worldview that 19th century Luddites challenged was that of laissez-... read more

The great Emma Goldman on patriotism:

Excerpts from her essay "Patriotism - A Menace to Liberty"

"WHAT then, is patriotism? 'Patriotism, sir, is the last resort of scoundrels,' said Dr. Johnson. Leo Tolstoy, the greatest anti-patriot of our times, defines patriotism as the principle that will justify the training of wholesale murderers; a trade that requires better equipment for the exercise of man-killing than the making of such necessities of life as shoes, clothing, and houses; a tra... read more
