Lessons for Barack Obama

Barack Obama and his supporters are exuberant after their victories this
last weekend in the Washington and Nebraska precinct caucuses, in the
Louisiana primary and the Maine municipal caucus. But they would do well
to remember that since the mid-1970s the Democratic National Committee
has spent countless hours plowing firebreaks between expressions of t... read more

The stories of the last two Taliban recruits are particularly depressing, not because of their military recruitment, which followed a well-established pattern, but because of what happened to them in Guantánamo. Yousef al-Shehri was just 16 years old when he was captured by Northern Alliance soldiers, in a group of around 120 fighters, after the surrender of the northern Afghan city of Kunduz in November 2001. Although dozens of juveniles have been held at Guantánamo, the U.S. (one of only tw... read more

..Wars are waged in someone else's name Not in mine. ..

Around us we hear the calls for war
new nations have nuclear bombs
alleged good guys use depleted uranium
in conventional weapons of mass destruction

The pressure
still lies harshly
on the memories of those whose silence
meant others would die

The pressure

on those whose labour

Excerpt: When in May 2005 the Bush apparatchiks officially adopted the Clinton policy towards the Balkans (until then, they merely allowed it to continue out of inertia), predictions were rife that independence for the occupied Serbian province of Kosovo would be just around the corner. After two and a half years of diplomatic, propaganda and political onslaught from Washington, London, Brussels and New York, it remains a pipe dream.

Excerpt: A boyish, inquisitive face with an innocent look peered out from the Washington Post's lead story yesterday on torture. It was well groomed, pink-shirted John Kiriakou, a CIA interrogator who could just as easily pass for the local youth minister.

Excerpt: The left wing of the antiwar movement has some very serious problems, mainly our inability to recognize that the antiwar sentiment in the United States is resonating far beyond the confines of the so-called "left."

Excerpt: US Jews appear to have become more opposed both to Israel's making key concessions in renewed peace talks with Palestinians and to the US carrying out a military attack against Iran's nuclear facilities, according to the latest in an annual series of surveys of Jewish opinion released here this week by the American Jewish Committee (AJC).

Excerpt: This weekand#8217;s surge in violence continues with at least 33 Iraqi dead and 32 Iraqi wounded in the latest attacks. Another five who were killed appear to be Arab foreigners. No Coalition troop deaths were reported. Eighteen bodies were found in a mass grave near Muqdadiyah. The bodies are thought to belong to men who were kidnapped and assassinated two months ago. Twelve of the victims were beheaded.
