Soma is a gem of the silk road, her styles of dance and her teaching abilities are very open and broad. She is flexible and allows for some creative feedback. Shes strong in her ways that relates to her passion for life and her passion for living the dance. Its good to know you and I certainly look forward to dancing with you in performance, in practice, in sisterhood ~ Jeze

Working with Chris over the past few years was a treat and a challenge. She is a gal who knows what she wants and no one can tell her no! I love her strength and ability to always bounce back and you can count on her for a great plant lecture!! I learned more about the moss in my front yard than I did about my neighborhood!! I love Chris aka Somatra Devi and hope she finds a great life for her wherever she lands. She deserves. I have have not known many people that work as hard or as dedicated as she does. Any dance group or business will have real asset on their hands!

One day I was wandering around the Renaissance faire and I spied some belly dancers. I sat down to watch and was enthralled by their skill, stage presence and beauty. One lady, Somatradevi, performed something called a fan dance. I'd never seen that kind of dancing before. I came back time after time to watch her and the other members of Oojam perform. This lady is not only beautiful, she is an excellent dancer, very intelligent and loves animals! I have seen her perform several times after that day at the faire, and each time I can see that she has improved. This last weekend, I watched her perform at Tribal Fusion, and I must say the word that comes to mind to describe her dancing is simply: WOW. Her dancing was as good or better than anyone else on stage that day. I am happy to have met her, as I believe she is a free and good spirit.

One day I was wandering around the Renaissance Faire and stopped to watch some belly dancing by a troupe called Oojam. I saw this very pretty lady dancing on stage with fans. I'd never seen that before, so I stopped, sat down and watched. I came back time after time to see Somatradevi and the other members of Oojam dance. I have seen Somatradevi dance many time after that fateful day, and each time I see her getting better and better. This last weekend I saw her perform at Tribal Fusion, and, well, the best word to describe her dancing is: WOW. This lady danced and she danced as well or better than anyone else there. I was impressed, my only disappointment was that her performance had to end! Sigh. I could have watched her dance for hours. Ih well, there will be future occasions, I am sure.

check out the new video I made
wow, so here is the ren fair I danced at in 2006. I really miss it and it is so nice to see my dance family on this video. I really miss you Marjhani, hamzah and all the fair people there that became like my family.
It is interesting how once we come in contact with other dance groups that we automatically get paranoid that we would not be as good as they are. I have seen this with other groups and dancers and apparently it seems that almost all dancers feel this. The funny thing is that it is only after you watch them, that you realize ok, I am not better or worse. Just different and great also! Sometimes we need to just affirm to ourselves a little more often that we are in our own rights dancers a...

Ok, this discussion comes up alot. I hear it all the time that if you are not dancing the standard ATS style created by Carolina of FAt Chance Belly Dance, then anything else is fusion. If this is so, then does this mean that ATS cannot evolve? Is it always static? where is the line drawn between ATS and fusion? Can we combine the 2 and call it ATF? to delineate it? Also, how far can we go with Just fusion where we actually loose any Middle eastern dance roots entirely?

I cant believe it, leading Prime Ministerial contender and anti terrorism crusader Benazir Bhutto was shot dead during an election rally in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near Islamabad. What is wrong with these pakistanis that hated her so much? because she was strong women! the world needed her! Pakastan needed her! This totally breaks my heart! With all the security she had, they got her! Today is a sad day in History! We lost Bhutto!

about me
Recently moved, I love the sisterhood of dance. I love getting together with many who have different backgrounds and dance differently. We all learn from each other and no matter how long I have been dancing, I meet another dancer and feel like I havent learned enough! I'm a nerdy botanist for the governement and teach dance on the side.
