I would like to invite you to attend the fall concert of the
Meadows Percussion Ensemble. It will be at 8pm on Wednesday,
November 19th in Caruth Auditorium in the Owens Arts Center on
the SMU campus. This concert is FREE and no ticket is required.

www.smu. edu/maps> The ensemble is
honored to have world renowned cellist, Andrés Díaz, as a
special guest and featured soloist. He will be performing Tan
Dun's "Elegy: Snow in June". Tan Dun is one of the world's most
exciting composers. He is best known for writing the score to
the film, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". This cello concerto
with percussion accompaniment is a virtuosic display for the
soloist as well as the percussionists. It is a blazing
tour-de-force. The ensemble is also honored to welcome Jac
Alder, executive director and producer of Theatre Three in
Dallas. Mr. Alder is joining the ensemble in a performance of
John Gibson's "Preachers, Thieves and Acrobats. Mr. Gibson
describes this piece as a family album containing true stories
and descriptions of actual members of his family. Poignant and
moving, the percussion ensemble sets the stage for the text that
describes each family member. A truly remarkable piece of music.
The ensemble is also pleased to present two of the greatest
masterpieces in the percussion repertoire, Edgard Varése's,
"Ionistaion" and John Cage's, "Third Construction" .
"Ionisation" , written in 1933, is considered the first piece of
Western music to treat percussion as a seperate idiom.
Varése uses timbre and texture to create a sound landscape
that is still stunning. "Third Construction" , written in 1941,
is a masterpiece from one of the most influential composers of
the 20th century. Using drums, tin cans, cricket callers, and
even a conch shell, this piece is seductive and inspiring.
Rounding out the program will be an arrangement of Claude
Debussy's, "String Quartet in G Minor", movement II, for marimba
ensemble and a xylophone rag, "Cross Corners", featuring Meadows
student, Aaron Trewitt as soloist.
