this prompted david brinkley to offer a commentary against the marigold "... because it isn't pretty and it smells bad." some lady wrote in to say that-- given the state of the world-- maybe that was appropriate. brinkley wrote back: "i always thought flowers were supposed to be a relief from ugliness and sordidness... not a confirmation of it."

maybe drummers could augment their livings by marching the streets offering to cure hiccups.

"here comes the hiccup man", people would say. 
just found out that clara harris and major rathbone-- the engaged couple in the presidential box when lincoln was shot-- were also step-siblings. i wonder if lincoln's last thought was about how wierd that is. rathbone eventually murdered his wife and wound up in an insane asylum. coincidence? i think not.
