update of myself
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 10:51 PMI've been on crutches for a few days now and it pretty much sucks. I can't even drive because the immobilizer prevents my leg from bending and my bad knee is my driving leg. So tomorrow I have to leave about an hour early before work to take the bus. At least I'm saving on gas money lol I was going to try to make it to dance class anyways to at least sit and watch, but since I have to leave extremely early for work and have to take the bus everywhere I'm definitely not going to be able to make it. So if anyone wonders where I went, don't worry, I didn't disappear. Hopefully the next time I see everyone will be soon and walking without crutches.

I'm not sure how long. My knee hasn't been hurting as much, so I was going to try and not use the crutches as much, but my knee was really swollen and I could barely bend it. I guess I'll find out this week when I go for my appointment. =o(

Hey Lindsey, hang in there. I too have a lot of knee issues. Like you, it started when I was very young and I have been to many specialists. and I am not a doctor, but I'm betting that you can overcome this pain. I still remember all of my knee exercises from physical therapy and I still do them when my knees get really bad (they're always somewhat bad). One time something snapped behind my left knee and I couldn't walk at all for about a week, ended up in ER too. And I was just walking in the mall when it happened. Many times I thought -this is it for my knees and i'm going to have to do some radical surgery. But so far I have balanced and bent and worked these knees back from so many injuries, more than I could count. So just know that you will heal. Just do what the doctor says and be gentle with yourself and let your body take the time it needs to heal.
I can teach you the exercises from therapy. You pretty much just want to do any strengthening that you can without bending the knee at all. so like straight leg lifts from all different sides are very good. When you get stronger then youc an add weight. Then after you build strength with the weight, you can possibly start doing reformer Pilates. Anne or I can help you there but that's a ways down the road. But right now, don't do anything. Ask your doctor when you can start working on it and if you have good enough insurance go to a PT. But if you can't get any therapy I can just teach you my emergency knee routine. As much as possible keep it elevated. Do anything you can to reduce swelling. Consider taking salt out of your diet for a few weeks. When you come back to dance don't do any deep knee bends for a while either. Don't worry about missing. You woudln't have even made it up the stairs anyway, although we could have probably carried you. lol. Feel better and please call me if you want some help with the exercises. |
