about me
My sparkly friend, *Samantha*, gave me my dance name. Baseema is Arabic for "smiling". Isn't that nice?!
I have loads of fun dancing around work, the grocery store, my house ... I love my husband. Engineering pays the bills, but I'd rather be dancing ... I've been dancing for about 5 years. It truly makes me happy and I can't help smiling. I love-love-love dancing with my troupe. The interaction of dancing with a great group of women is energizing. It's a wonderful community feeling. While many belly dancers try to put a label on themselves, I don't think I have a particular style that I am married to. I am a tribal improv dancer, but I dance solos, too. I've danced some tribal fusion and Goth, as well. Cabaret style is beautiful, too. But, I don't have the figure for a "sparkly bikini". If asked, I will call myself a "dancer".

No media image can stand up to the certainty of nature. I’ve never considered a tree to be “too large” or its surface needing to be changed in any way. Nature thrives on variety and diversity; it is never too much or too little, too fat, thin, dimpled, wrinkled, small, big, hairy, ugly-it just is. Our choice remains to claim that most basic freedom: to just be and love who we really are.

We've been busy planning Shimmies for a Cure. We want the event to be fun. If everybody has a good time, we'll consider it a success.

But, Shimmies for a Cure is much more than having fun. And, an article from ABC News reminded me of why we started this ... In 1996, construction workers building the research center for Dana Farber Cancer Institute spray painted the names of the kids going through cancer treatment on the building's steel beams. This story touched my heart. It's ... read more

I am touched by the outpouring of support we've received from this talented and beautiful belly dance community. We started with a small idea three years ago and I'm overwhelmed with how much it has grown. Thank you to everybody who has supported me. shimmies4cure.tripod.com/

Moondancebellydance.com donated this beautiful quilt to Shimmies for a Cure III. It's one of a kind and made with sari fabric and purple velvet. More gorgeous than my picture can show. We'll be auctioning this quilt at Shimmies for a Cure III on March 28.
