about me
I am a horticulturalist. Plants are my box of crayons. Dirt is my sheet of paper. I also write about gardening and other stuff. I volunteer at a local museum helping to restore the garden to its former glory. I sometimes work on figure studies in clay hoping to someday add male nude sculpture to my own garden. Fat chance, but one never knows. I could be struck by talent some day.

Marching (blog entry) On October 10 and 11 there will be a march in Washington D.C. for equality. I'd like this march to be a success. The media will probably judge the march's success by the number of participants. So I've booked a seat on an Equality WMass bus leavin... read more

Napoleon's "Sex Change" (blog entry) Napoleon, who said, "It is at home, not in public, one washes one's dirty linen." would be mortified to have it known that he is entombed without his penis. For some reason it was removed by one of his British captors after his death on St. Helena... read more

Phallic City (blog entry) This week, a map of Holyoke on the wall of a thrift store prompted a customer to say, "Look, Holyoke is giving us the finger!".

So I've booked a seat on an Equality WMass bus leaving at 1:00 a.m. on October 11. I've never done anything like this. I'd like the LBTG community throughout the U.S. to enjoy the same rights and privileges that I have in Massachusetts. I hope this march is a step toward that end. I urge everyone aroun... read more

For some reason it was removed by one of his British captors after his death on St. Helena, and its mummified remains have been described as resembling a tiny sea horse.

One of my favorite quotations from Blaise Pascal is, "Le coeur a ses raisons, que la raison ne connait pas." It translates as, "The heart has it's reasons, which reason does not know." It is a sentiment echoed by Francis Bacon when he wrote, " 'Tis impossible to love and be wise.", and by Antione Bret in, "Le premier soupir de l'amour est le denier de la sagesse." ("The first sigh of love is the last of wisdom."). These thoughts resonate deeply with me because I've been in that position. So I... read more

Frank Sinatra asked for his autograph at a restaurant, and Igor Stravinsky saw nothing surprising in that. I hadn't listened to Stravinsky's music for some time until last night when I heard his opera/oratorio 'Oedipus Rex' to a libretto by Jean Cocteau. I followed that work with a collection of 12 miniatures ranging from 'Tango' to 'Scherzo a la Russe'.

I've never listened to Stravinsky for relaxation. Whether it's his bombshell 'The Rite of Spring' of 1913, or his nostalgic 'The Fairy'... read more
