what's up

can't quite believe it, but the boy is a year old. a lot of stuff has gone down with us. lots of fun and good times, some hard stuff too. been too busy to make much music, but we listen a lot, and i've rediscovered things that i've loved and forgotten---pete seeger, odetta, louis armstrong, and major scale. i used to totally snob the major scale, but you know, it's got some nice things going for it. and i make up little songs for him--never did that before. baby is crazy for guitars, ... read more

Our son came into this world July 31, 2007. We adore him. Now he's almost three months old. Overnight, three whole new people came into being: a baby, a mom and a dad. I hope I'll be a good mom to him, do right by him, bring love and music and sunshine into his life. I feel so lucky to have a tribe--many tribes--to help me raise him. More photos in the album.

it's all about the nighttime. it seemed to me that i could be in the grubbiest, dingiest place the daytime--hot, smoggy, rundown, stressful--and the same place at night was magic. the temperature goes down; the drama goes up. everywhere we went, the buildings were lit up like theater backdrops, everyone dressed up and came out; sat and smoked narghile and sipped tea; ate felafel and kebab; looked and were looked at. especially during ramadan, it really seemed like everyone woke up and came a... read more

i visited some very old cities. damascus is the oldest city in the world that people have been living in continuously; halab (aleppo) is close to that. here in california we are impressed to meet someone who is a fifth or sixth generation californian; that means that their people came with the gold rush, and what they found was oak groves, herds of wild deer, giant redwoods; but damascus was already an ancient city at that time, and i have no idea how many generations a person's family coul... read more

i spent about 5 weeks in turkey, syria and egypt. in turkey, i got off the plane, sinan picked me up and we went right to his house, where they were having a zikr. so, that was my welcome. it was very beautiful, and the only other time i saw dancing was in cairo, at another sufi event. so my travels were framed my ecstatic devotion. it was hard to remember that, when we were sitting in the hellish traffic of cairo... turkey from the sky looks blue, like the blue-eyed mashallahs that you see e... read more

it was really cold playing outside. sure it's september; but by late afternoon the fog blew in off the bay, and we wished we had hot cocoa and fingerless gloves. still, a lot of people came out, sat on the grass, and susan lead line dances around the park.

dozens of cute little kids danced in front of the stage, and when we played quiet pieces, they sat and watched us. i think we always play better when there's kids to entertain us; besides, they watch us really closely.

they were having a rousseau exhibit at the national gallery. i remembered that i have always loved rousseau. he was called le douanier, the tax collector, because of his dull job, and he never left france and he never saw a jungle, but he went to the gardens, and he looked at the plants, and he went to the museum and looked at stuffed animals, and he read thrilling accounts of the jungle, and he made these beautiful crazy paintings of the jungle. and they're all wrong, he got a lot of things... read more

I went on a whirl to the east coast.

it's all shady and green there. i had forgotten about the sunlight in the green leaves. it's beautiful. we didn't see fireflies, but the cicadas were roaring in the trees, and there were east coast birds singing so sweetly.
