about me
I'm a 27 year old Belgian dude. Ever been to Belgium? It rocks! We have the best beer in the world and you have to be only 16 to drink. And from where I live, Holland is only 30 minutes away so getting some weed is no problem. We also make killer fries. Why do people call them French Fries anyway? They aren't French! I once ate fries in France and they sucked. And, yes, we do put mayonaise on our fries, just like the Dutch!
I work as a lab technician for a Japanese pharmaceutical company. Not the most glamourous or best paying job in the world but I like it. Chemistry interested me since the first time I saw a mad scientist in a cartoon brewing something nasty. Of course, the real thing is nothing like that.
I like reading a lot, mostly science fiction and comics. My favourite author is William Gibson. His novel "Neuromancer" is the greatest masterpiece ever created. I also like Larry Niven and Douglas Adams. The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy was a great book, and the movie wasn't too disappointing either. Doesn't happen that often that a great book is made into a great movie.
My favourite comic is XIII (thirteen), a thriller about a guy who lost his memory. It's a bit like "The Bourne Identity", I even believe it's based on the movie (the original one, not the remake with Matt Damon). Also Largo Winch, a true masterpiece. Other comics I like are Technopriest and Hagar the Horrible. I also like manga and anime. Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Vampire Hunter D, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Hellsing, ...
Another progress report
(blog entry)
Okay, so how is my 3D engine project going? I rewrote some of the code in the engine itself to make it more readable and easier to maintain. The engine loads meshes and materials properly and displays them. The converter is more or less finished, ...

Converter progress report
(blog entry)
Done some more work on the conversion utility today. I'm almost done with importing Anim8or files. Materials and meshes load nicely, I just need to format the text properly so it will be easier to convert everything to my own custom format. When t...

3D file format
(blog entry)
I'm taking a short break from writing my 3D engine. Before I can continue with that I need to write a program to convert Anim8or files to my own XML-based 3D file format. Now you probably wonder, why don't you just use Anim8or files directly? Firs...

Worked some more on my engine today. I've added classes for lights and experimented a bit with materials. The following screenshot is the dodecahedron, illuminated by a wide-focus spotlight. A red ambient color and blue specular color has been app...

Update on 3D engine
(blog entry)
Okay, did some more work on the 3D engine. First I wanted to do materials and textures, but then I thought it would be better to add lights first. After all, I already had a light source added to the test program so I just needed to turn it into a...

Okay, so how is my 3D engine project going? I rewrote some of the code in the engine itself to make it more readable and easier to maintain. The engine loads meshes and materials properly and displays them. The converter is more or less finished, I just need to fix a few bugs. Sometimes there are things in the source files, such as line breaks in polygon descriptions, that can cause the program to crash. Just a few more tweaks and bugfixes and I should be able to convert and load Anim8or file...

Done some more work on the conversion utility today. I'm almost done with importing Anim8or files. Materials and meshes load nicely, I just need to format the text properly so it will be easier to convert everything to my own custom format. When this is done, I'll return to the engine. First I'll do some testing to check if meshes are loaded properly. I'll also test all the transformations (scaling, rotating, moving). When that's done, I'll start working on loading materials from files and ap...

I'm taking a short break from writing my 3D engine. Before I can continue with that I need to write a program to convert Anim8or files to my own XML-based 3D file format. Now you probably wonder, why don't you just use Anim8or files directly? First of all, there are lots of 3D file formats and I don't want to add support for all those different file types to my 3D engine. I think it's easier to use one dedicated format for the engine and then just write conversion programs for other formats. ...

Worked some more on my engine today. I've added classes for lights and experimented a bit with materials. The following screenshot is the dodecahedron, illuminated by a wide-focus spotlight. A red ambient color and blue specular color has been applied to the polygons, making it purple. It's going better than I expected. In just a few days I've accomplished more than in the weeks that I tried getting started in DirectX!
If you wonder what Winamp was playing when I took the screenshot, it wa...

Okay, did some more work on the 3D engine. First I wanted to do materials and textures, but then I thought it would be better to add lights first. After all, I already had a light source added to the test program so I just needed to turn it into a C++ class. Turned out to be quite easy. I now have a class for point light sources. The position and all color parameters can be changed in real time. Next I'm gonna add a spotlight class, wich also shouldn't be that difficult.
(update) I also fi...
