Bound Jizo

a magistrate seeking to discover a thief who has stolen a cartload of cloth. He orders the Jizo bound and brought to the court for "negligence" as the Jizos are the protectors of travelers. The people in the court laugh at this and he orders them to each produce a swath of cloth to the Jizo as a fine. They comply and he is able to determine from the swath's who the thief is. To this day people who have a wish tie a rope to the Jizo until the wish comes true and then they untie it. At the end of the year the monks cut the ropes of any unfulfilled wishes.
