what my friends say about me....

July 29, 2007
Aaminah has the kindest spirit, you can't help but feel her positive energy. She is also a caring friend, and has a way of making everyone feel at home when you're in her presents. Her great love of travel and cultures is evident in how she lives her life. Aaminah is a beautiful and graceful dancer. She knows how to "feel" the music and it expresses flawlessly. It is a pleasure to know this fun loving, free spirit with a great sense of humor!

Mandy is my co-conspirator in belly dance and eBay addictions! We both started belly dance classes together after being persuaded by Heather/Anon and have been obsessed ever since! Over the few short years since we began taking classes, Mandy has grown immeasurably in so many aspects of her life...from her dance skills, to increased confidence, to her recent discovery of sewing talents! Mandy is not only a wonderful dancer, but she's also super crafty. She makes beautiful jewelry and has recently discovered that sewing isn't as scary as she originally thought, and has created beautiful and creative costumes very quickly! Plus she's super sweet and a ton of fun to hang out with! Luv ya!

Mandy has really excelled in her belly dancing over the past year! Its AMAZING to me to see how much she has developed! She has started to put more of her personality into her dance while simultaneously spicing it up with more daring and fearlessness. She's warm hearted and has a wicked sense of humor! I've only had the opportunity to get to know Mandy better since she's been dancing and am that our life's paths have converged! She is another who has allowed me to put more of myself in my dancing. On another note, I can't believe she put up the ice luge picture and I invite everyone and anyone to look for it in her photo album!!! muuuaaagggghhhh!!!!

URGENT -save the Achuar & the rainforest

I have just returned from a 2 week trip to Ecuador, which included a week at the Kapawi Ecolodge and Preserve on the Rio Capahuari, close to the Peruvian border. It really was the best experience of my life and I hope to stay connected to it by starting a non profit org. to donate school supplies to local communities and by going back to volunteer with the English teacher. The Kapawi project is unique because it is located in the territory of the Achuar, an Amazonian culture who had no contact with outsiders until the 1970s. The land is pristine, with several Achuar settlements here and there. Although missionaries came to the area and the people wear western clothing, they are fighting to preserve their culture and protect their lands. In the northern part of the Amazon basin in Ecuador, oil companies have destroyed much of the land and robbed the people of their homes and culture. The Achuar are trying to prevent this from happening in the south. They value education very highly because they see it as the only way to stop oil companies and other corporations from encroaching on their land. Kapawi is one of the best ecotourism projects I have ever seen. In 2011, the ecolodge will be completely handed over to the Achuar. Many of the Achuar guides and workers are currently learning English so they will be able to be self-suffiicient, without having to hire outside guides or translators. Being an anthropologist and a person who hates change in my own life, going into it, I had doubts about the program, because of its impact on the local communities. However, after seeing pictures of and reading reports about the devastation in the north, I think that a restricted amount of ecotourism is the best way for the Achuar to preserve their culture, environment, and rights. It is a major crisis that affects much of South America. However, many indigenous groups have organized to fight against big oil. There is currently a lawsuit by one group against ChevronTexaco, who dumped 19 billion gallons of toxic wastewaters into the region and was responsible for 16.8 million gallons of crude oil spilling from the main pipeline into the forest.

I am hoping to become involved personally in the helping the Achuar. I hope that others will learn about the situation and do the same.

closet sale! (UPDATED!)

Green & red Indian choli & skirt set $20, plus shipping
This is a gorgeous folkloric set that I bought used on Ebay. I've only worn it once or twice.
The skirt is 38 inches long and can fit up to a 40 inch waist with a drawstring. The top of the skirt is decorated with shisha mirrors and cowries. There are embroidered dancers on the skirt and choli. The choli fits up to a 32 inch bust (it was a little snug on me).
The sleeve openings are 4 1/2 inches when laying flat. The length of the choli is 12 1/2 inches from the top of the shoulder to the bottom.
There are hook and eye enclosures up the front. The only problem is that, on the choli, some of the green dye from the neck bled onto the red fabric around it. There are also a few dye stains on the front of the choli.
It had the stains on it when I bought it and I tried to cover them by wearing lots of jewelry and tribal dangles. Still, it is a beautiful, rare set!

Purple velvet cabaret hipscarf $15, plus shipping.
I bought to wear for a cabaret piece, but it just isn’t my style! It is a
beautiful, deep purple color, with lots of gold sequins, beads, and
pailettes.

I prefer PayPal but can also make other arrangements if necessary. I usually ship via USPS Priority Mail. Prices are negotiable.

Thank you!!!
aaminah :)
