The Disconnected Threads of A Weary Mind

Senior Project

Did you have to do one of these? Daughter number 2 is starting on her project, and damned if the advisor told her No.

Ran's heading for the art world, and decided she wanted to make a duct tape dress. Wearable, yes, but more of a sculpture than an ode to a seamstress. There's an annual contest with a $3000 scholarship for these types of dresses - she can't enter, she's not allowed to reap financial rewards from her senior project.

So truly, an art project. No. Advisor tells her it's not of any value; it has no worth; there's no education value, no intellect involved in a project like this. Um. Bull?!

So instead - she's crocheting a dress. Hmmm, still using alternative materials to make a dress. Still focusing on the artistic aspects. But crocheting is acceptable.

Go figure. There is no way I can help her with this one, it was never a skill I learned.

Erg!

With some of the nonsense I see people in the fashion world getting paid big money for, there's no value in a duct tape dress? Hogwash! Not to mention if your truck breaks down on the way to the prom, all's you need is some baling wire and you're ready for repairs!

Her senior advisor is woefully out of touch. Ah, well.

Did you see the finalists for 2007's scholarship? www.ducktapeclub.com/contest...list.asp

Look at the construction involved in these clothes and tell me there's no "educational value" or "intellect" involved in their construction.

Precisely!! The creativity and the workmanship the winners put into their outfits is just incredible. And yes, advisor is out there and out of touch.
