So, about 34% of petrolium resources are consumed by automobiles and trucks. Some projections anticipate that within 30 to 50 years the world's petrolium resources will be nearing depletion. Today, the media and the world is focused on gas prices and the inconvenience of costly travel. But what about the materials, products and procedures that rely on petrolium. High strength plastics and adhesives, lubricants, coatings, insulation, energy generation and compounds for food production are all necessary to sustaining life.
Setting aside gas prices and the destruction of the earth's atmosphere, what are the consequences of consuming the world's petrolium resources for personal mobility?
Below are tough questions that beg answers now if the world is to evolve from petrolium dependency while retaining some version of life as we know it.
What material technology or natural material will replace heart valves, stints, limb joint replacements, and the equipment and tools the enable medical procedures?
How will vehicles and distribution continue without deisl, plastics, hydralic fluids and lubricants?
What materials will replace high strength plastics and fibers that enable electric and other alternative energy based vehicles to operate efficiently and affectively?
How will the world population be fed without petrolium based agricultural products and energy to cultivate large tracts of land?
Should the United States lead world resource conservation and why shouldn't the US seek preservation and more careful management of natural resources (petrolium) to ensure time to provide research and development of alternative materials, products and energy generation?
What strategic approaches would benefit the longevity of petrolium resources and enable a sustainable transition from polution plagued fossil fuel to an earth friendly and sustainable palette of materials and products that can retain some of the health, safety and welfare aspects of today's society?
What will US society look like in 60 years where reliance on recycled materials are potentially a primary un-natural resource and life goes on with little or no petrolium based products? Will the world's landfills and ocean dumps become the next minning opportunities for needed resources?
