Oh my god - thats me
Red Sky in Morning
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 12:48 PMI woke up at 9am today, but it felt like sunrise. The light shining through the window was red - deep red. I pointed out to Julian how our white sheets were almost salmon, and peered out the window. The sun high up in the sky looked ominous, incredibly pink and tinged with red. I instantly said " Something is wrong." At that instant I heard fire engines wailing outside several trucks seemed to be going in several directions. As I gazed up the sun suddenly grew and brightened and I cried out "oh god, we're dead." It seemed like sun was going nova, or it was armageddeon, or equally something awful. I was not alone in feeling this way, the emergency lines were clogged. It was a cloud passing, way high up, like a regular cloud, but full of smoke that scented the air, and everywhere people were calling in to 911 about the smell. A search for "Red Sun San Francisco" brought me to this page.

The smoke color and odd weather are caused by a fire in Nevada, hundreds of miles away, and sometimes by another fire at least 75 miles away. I am not in any danger. These things are all happening far away, in wooded or grassy areas - not near cities, it wont spread to SF, but we are all affected.

the Lick fire is down south in california, by Gilroy, and is also contributing to the whole lurid scene. It is growing to be the size of San Francisco.

1,700 of our local Bay Area fire fighters have gone off to beat the fires. Brave guys. send them good vibes.

its a wilderness area, not not very populated with humans. I dont know of any casualties, and I think they would be mentioned. There was likely some property damage.
"The Moonlight Fire, has prompted mandatory evacuations for 30 homes and several campgrounds in the area. Over 300 homes have been given voluntary evacuation orders." |

hmmm
I woke up. I noticed the pink sun out the back window. The only strange part was that I couldn't *smell* any smoke. Coming from Orange County, every other October would bring scorching heat, and a brush fire in the hills. The sky turns brown, ashes rain from the sky, everything smells like hickory smoke flavor. This was every alternating October or September. The other years, the stuff hadn't grown back yet. People would talk about arsen or kids playing with matches. But it was so regular it had to be "natural phenomena" like just oily rancher grass getting ignited by the magnifying glass of a broken bottle.
We would all hose down our rooves. The next door neighbor installed sprinklers on her shake roof, but eventually replaced it all with red spanish tiles made of tin. |
