<div>The weather was shockingly hot yesterday and everything is dry.

I woke up at 9am today, but it felt like sunrise. The light shining through the window was red - deep red. I pointed out to Julian how our white sheets were almost salmon, and peered out the window. The sun high up in the sky looked ominous, incredibly pink and tinged with red. I instantly said " Something is wrong." At that instant I heard fire engines wailing outside several trucks seemed to be going in several directions. As I gazed up the sun suddenly grew and brightened and I cried out "oh god, we're dead." It seemed like sun was going nova, or it was armageddeon, or equally something awful. I was not alone in feeling this way, the emergency lines were clogged. It was a cloud passing, way high up, like a regular cloud, but full of smoke that scented the air, and everywhere people were calling in to 911 about the smell. A search for "Red Sun San Francisco" brought me to this page.

The smoke color and odd weather are caused by a fire in Nevada, hundreds of miles away, and sometimes by another fire at least 75 miles away. I am not in any danger. These things are all happening far away, in wooded or grassy areas - not near cities, it wont spread to SF, but we are all affected.

the Lick fire is down south in california, by Gilroy, and is also contributing to the whole lurid scene. It is growing to be the size of San Francisco.

1,700 of our local Bay Area fire fighters have gone off to beat the fires. Brave guys. send them good vibes.

<div>manhattan was a trip - I walked everywhere and lost pounds, but now I am home to gain them back

i spent 20$ that I dont have at the fabric store, nice folks though!
http://www.yelp.com/biz/6GFe7LO7236VtTsL-bkKfg

and then went to scrap:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/9MmEddCB75q3H1ewMqnImQ
and bought 5x the amount for..5$. Also i picked up some discarded carpet - long bits of blu rug. i have a hankering to do the stairs over - they've had the same carpet since the 1970's and its dangerously slippery.

It's a huge project with much footage of rug in the home. julian will be annoyed...maye I can do it while he's gone? I'd need like three people struggling with a rug with me, so it'd depend on my both working and absent hoseumates. sigh..in a week i'll ask if anybody wants a nice blue rug collection?

In the meantime, I began trying to quilt. right now I just cut out pieces. i've always wanted one of those of my own - and i am really just using it to teach myself how to machine sew. so, maybe it wont make me cry with frustration. here's hoping :)

<div>It was actually Dan's party - he missed out on all the white trash parties people had in the 90's. I had a hard time talking to people that I didn't know, because i kept getting this subconscious message that they were idiots. They were of course, not idiots. I wasn't dressed too stupidly myself - just very crass. I had on panties that had Oscar the Grouch on the front, and on the back said "I love trash!"</div>

    </a>
<div>She was there in the corner of our minds for a while, we would see her crossing a hallway or some boring typical non-moment like that. You'd see that while occupied with other things. This is because you only see things like these if you are both not paying attention.

I said maybe the house desired a cat so much it was manifesting one. Then we got a cat - Jezebel. As soon as little Jezebel moved in, the ghost cat vanished from our lives. Jezebel moved out recently, though, so now we have a ghost cat again. People report seeing her here and there. "Do you have a cat?"

Ghost cat woke eso up this morning by nuzzling her friendly fuzzy face in our friend eso's hand, which woke her up.

Our ghost cat is a completely uncreepy thing, but I like this creepy little picture, because it shows something very true about cat personalities and looks a little like Jezebel.

Hopefully the internet will crush the old corporate news media and give rise to the newer more personal stuff. in which case, this guy Josh Wolf is our little forerunner of freedom. he's had 144 days in jail, for an actual just cause. Thats where the Fourth estate of the press is defined as a protected bunch. it's like a wild and weird branch of the gummint, somehow. See, because you cant have a free and edcuated people without information, and that info has to NOT be coming from the goverment.

<div>This should please my more sarcastic friends. The Nietzsche Family Circus pairs a randomized Family Circus cartoon with a randomized Friedrich Nietzsche quote.

<div>" As long as the press is free, a nation is guaranteed against sudden and capricious folly, either from above or from below. As long as the press is free, a nation is guaranteed against the worse evil of persistent and obstinate folly, cloaking itself under the venerable shapes of tradition and authority.

For under a free press,a nation must ultimately be guided not by a caste, not by a class, not by mere wealth, not by the passions of a mob: but by mind; by the net result of all the common-sense of its members; and in the present default of genius, which is un-common sense, common-sense seems to be the only, if not the best, safeguard for poor humanity."

Charles Kingesley 1867

okay, he was literally talking about a free press, but that is what bloggers are. Also, notice he mentioned a net result of common sense of members. that's the blogsphere, dewd.

    </a>
<div>tesla coil battles big flaming sculpture

The sculpture burst flowers of many types of flame and spark - green flames, yellow flames, white sparks like from a toy gun. The Tesla coil slowly wound itself up to a real jolt of electrical power - after a while you could actually smell it. The bursts of flame were percussive, hit my ear on a level different than that of mere sound. The show went on for a good while and felt super dangerous. Dozens of people were leaning on a metal barricade, packed closely with the crowd behind, as purple fingers of lightning randomly flickered to whatever was attractive. Occasional a burst went towards the crowd, a vein of energy that edged closer and closer. I stayed well back. i have respect for the people who do these things, but I said, "I have learnt a powerful lesson at Burning Man - always watch out for others and never assume that anyone is watching out for you."

<div>For whatever reason, whenever someone at craft night will make a diss about christians, a housemate will reply "well, jackie's a christian...hey...aren't you?" and the whole room stares at me as I try to burble a definite answer covering a complex issue which is also a hotspot for my friends. " uh, I count as a christian, yeah. Sorta. I like Christ."

Recently I found myself saying in snarky tones " i don't believe he is my personal lord and savior." which caused internal recrimination, because I dont not believe that, either. I'm just...not...covered by whatever categories there are. Which is why i don't go to church, cuz there isn't one. Closest thing to it for me aesthetically is Burning Man.

I find that it translates as that I am comfortable with the idea of christianity, my skin doesnt crawl, i don't equate it with evil, whereas my friends often get really upset just thinking about some butthead who said some spooky mean thing. It's hard because for the Left right now, christian has the same ring that feminist has to the Right. especially with that airhead president we have now, judeo - christianity looks sucky.

"Joan of Arcadia" mentioned below, comes very close to describing my take on god, without actually getting it right it too often. the first episode nails it for me, though. It sounded like God to me.

Here we go, movies i have watched this month!

Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill, 1999
I was curious to see what the fuss was about. I did chuckle, but no pants peeing laughter. I loved his explanation that transvestites like him are tomboys, so the look is not high heels and fingernails "basically, like male lesbians".

Breakin' It Down, 2005
i rented this in order to learn hip hop dance moves. I know no standard dance "moves" of any kind, my dancing style can best be described as "muppet" or "polka" or "muppet polka". Apparently she inteds to teach you how to dance like paula abdul, not a goal of mine, but I'm open. I could master only the retarded "dusting the shoulder". Mildly dispiriting.

Snatch, 2000
Rented this for Paul and travlin - travlin was threatening to rent it at blockbuster, for crying out loud - they cut their movies for content. Anyhoo, it was a blast, a modern classic, and I was glad to introduce it to a newbie Arresting factoid - BrickTop closely resembles my Scots grandmother, who partly raised me. Demeanor, accent, glasses, pissiness, everthing but "chopping up people and feeding them to pigs". I have been snatching mp3s from the soundtrack ever since.

Joan of Arcadia: Season 1
I love this show. Its addictive. It makes me cry buckets. I like that feeling. i wish they would renew the show and bring out season 3.

Kingdom of Heaven, 2005
Ridley Scott Crusades epic - supposedly there is a really cool directors cut which I'm renting now. I rented this to show Julian the character of Jerusalem, who I found deeply moving.

Gods and Monsters, 1998
I I wrote a good review of it on Netflix, about how they are metaphorically talking about geniuses as the gods and grunts as monsters, and what that all really mean bla bla
I gotta admit, I was hoping for some real Gods and Monsters to show up. Worth it if you like character acting.
