Simon's testimonial about Michael is completely true, but I think he only described one or two facets of this multi-faceted, fascinating, irritating, loving, madening, outrageous and tender guy. It is true, he is a philosopher, artist, and poet born of angst and heartache. All of that perspective of him is there in deep, mineable abundance. But there's also another side to Michael, the sweet, thoughtful, gentle, loving, "normal" side to him that is kind to old ladies, little kids, and puppies, who is tender-hearted enough to weep at sentimentality, yet will not suffer fools, hypocrisy, injustice, or hurtfullness. He is at once a child that needs to be held and comforted and loved, and yet he is a man who can also be a source of strength and comfort and love to others. I was fortunate to be his boyfriend for a time. I am fortunate to have him as my best buddy now. He is my rock and touchstone. He keeps me grounded and laughing, yet also keeps me ever questioning and searching. He is my heart. I love you Michael!

He is not for the squeamish, the lilly livered, the space cadets who think love is what makes the world go round.
Know the man before you dare criticize his genius. Mike knows darkness. He knows the beast that lurks in the human heart. He has endured human cruelties you won't even let your mind think about. I have had glimpses into what he's gone through and I've had to turn away because I just couldn't take it. Not everyone gets a bowl of cherries for life. God, being the asshole that he is, gave Mike a bowl of shit. Don't believe me? Ask him!! And when you see him shrug it off, you will experience Zen.
There is sadness. There is bitterness and frustration. Play counselor and condescend him at your own risk because he is so far beyond your superficial catagories. He is the sharp teeth that bite into the soft, vulnerable flesh of your optimism. He is the bored audience at the theater. He's gone through the Abyss that you keep avoiding. When you become annoyed with shallow hedonists, Mike will be smirking at you from the shadows. Mike will be walking the Earth long after the Burning Man hippies have been incinerated by the blast of the mushroom cloud. He is a survivor.
So it goes without saying that there is an amazing beauty within him that you'll be hard pressed to find elsewhere. He's an acquired taste. He is not the carefully refined itty bitty piece of glass that fools you into thinking it's a diamond...but rather,he is the real thing...the crude diamond the size of your fist that you'll have to dig through miles of rock to get to.
I love Mike. I am proud to know him. Give him a chance and learn something about the world you live in.
