The day I gave a homeless man banana bread.

I have lived in NYC for 10 months now, and very rarely have I seen the same stranger twice in my neighborhood. There are constantly new faces on my street. I dont know what holes these people are crawling out of, but Im sure the rent is ridiculous! The neighbor that I have seen the most, almost everyday, doesnt pay rent at all. He is a hunched over decrepited bushy old man with a big white Santa Claus beard and kind sad eyes who lives about 20 feet west of my front door. We havent spoken a word to each other, I dont know one thing about this poor man, but for 10 months now Ive had this urge to bake him bread. I dont know why I wanted to bake him bread, I dont even really know how to bake bread or if he even likes bread. But he is worthy of my long, labored efforts in the unfamiliar land of kitchen.
On April 30th 2007. I googled a banana bread recipe to make for my dear neighbor. I ran to the grocery store and bought all of the ingredients for the delicious bread. I even had to buy flour... what kitchen doesnt have flour?? Mine. After a good hour and a half of preparing and baking my goodie, I first let the bread cool down a little, then sliced it, and wrapped it in tin foil to keep it nice and warm. I placed the freshly baked bread with some folded napkins in a paper bag. I was ready to deliver my final product.

He was sitting on his usual stoop, about 20 feet west of my apartment when I approached him. "Excuse me, sir. I just baked some bread, and I was wondering if you would want some."

"Um. Uh. Im not hungry." He replied.

"Well, you dont have to eat it now, but I want you to have it." I said.

"But Im not hungry."

"You can eat it tomorrow if you want"

"No. Im not hungry."

"Wont you be hungry tomorrow?"

"Im not hungry."

"But its a gift"

"I dont want it."

I couldnt convince my friend to take the bread, so I left the package on his shopping cart hoping he would find it sometime soon. I started my long walk home.

Why didnt he want my bread? Why didnt he appreciate that I wanted to give him something? Why didnt he thank me for my efforts to improve his life for a short moment?? Why wasnt he praising me and thanking me for being so kind and warm hearted?

During my 20 feet walk home, I had the chance to process the last few hours and make some conclusions. It was silly of me to expect instant gratification. Im sure once he tastes the banana goodness, he will find it in his heart to thank me for everything I have ever done for him. He will probably stop me in the street someday to tell how I improved his life. I will always remember as April 30th as the day I altrusitically baked a homeless man banana bread.
