And I am in oakland. House sitting for the summer.
Got a job off Craigslist caring for a disabled man within a week of arriving, which is good because I rolled into town with only $60 and a half tank of gas. It is teaching me a lot about paitence and appreciating the little things that aren't so little when you don't have them...like the ability to wipe your own ass or make your own dinner.
I am full of gratitude for my family and my loving community that have helped me through this difficu... read more

From The Prophet by Kalhlil Gibran...

Then Almitra spoke, saying, "We would ask now of Death."
And he said:
You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?
The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.
If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.
In the depth of your hopes ... read more

THAT Damned Band comprises a repertoire of original dark carnival and circus music, jug band music, and traditional music from around the globe. THAT Damned Band is an accordion driven group of multi-talented songsters, which pay musical tribute to eastern European, gypsy, Klesmer, and old-tyme vaudevillian era music and style. Whether playing creepy dark carnival originals or rousing drinking songs, THAT Damned Band features a unique arrangement that includes Accordion, Clarinet, Jug, flute, Washboard rhythm, guitar, Washtub bass, and Tuba. An emotionally charged musical set is spiced up with gags and puppets by their own clown, Lowrent the clown, and occasionally by REAL LIVING HUMAN ODDITIES.

THAT Damned Band also provides the background music for the 999 EYES Authentic Freakshow – the last traveling freakshow in the United States focusing on REAL LIVING HUMAN ODDITES with MEDICAL ANOMALIES, and a MUSEUM OV MUTANTSTROSITIES. The 999 EYES freaks and the 999 Eyes “Museum ov Mutantstrosities” carnival sideshow museum occasionally make cameo appearances with THAT Damned Band.

Esmerelda Strange is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist based out of San Francisco, CA. Drawing on the vaudevillian tradition of the one man band; she plays the accordion, drums and sings all at the same time.

Ms. Strange would describe herself as a punk rock band, but her musical influences and the resulting product contain elements of urban folk, cumbia, circus music, Norteno/ranchero, and an Eastern European gypsy sound. She sings both in English and Spanish. She is known for her saucy sense of humor and salty lyrics.

Her music has been described as "acoustic electro-clash goes to the punk rock circus in Mexico."
and her shows..

" It's like watching a punk rock polka goddess making good on a bet with some ranchero band after a tequila binge in Tiajuana"
--Jeff Inman. Las Vegas City Life. Sept. 05

Izzy Cox ........is an anarchist crooner

she has coined the style Voodoobilly

Jazz as her own;

Influenced by old movie soundtracks,

Old time bar room blues and country singers.

Her lyrics are like diary entries..

Stories of serial killers, buckaroo cowboys,

snake handlers and sports of nature .

HELP SAVE THE AUSTIN ENCHANTED FOREST!!! URGENT!! (events » community) Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 10:00 PM URGENT!!!!! HELP SAVE THE AUSTIN ENCHANTED FOREST!!!

The Austin Enchanted forest is the most unique venue in Austin. The 3 acres of land hosts the internationally famous annual “Art Outside” Festival every year during SXSW, This is one of the only places in Austin for artists to exhibit large scale art installations. As a performance venue thus far this year the Enchanted Forest has hosted almost 250 acts. Performance, poetry and all types of music. Every Halloween The Forest hosts the locally acclaimed Haunted Forest.

The Enchanted Forest ii is “Keeping Austin Weird”, and providing an important venue for local bands, performance artists and djs to hone and refine their skills. Many of the acts booked at the Forest have few other venues in austin where they can perform. Such as The Lifesize Mousetrap from San Francisco, or Arc Attack the Tesla Coil Orchestra.

Unfortunately, this haven of creativity, art and music is being shut down by the City of Austin. A handful of people have taken it upon themselves to call PACE, The Austin Public Assembly Code Enforcement Team to complain whenever the gates of the Forest are open.

We , the community of artists, performers and musicians need to tell the Austin policy-makers just how valuable and important The Forest is to the creative life and character of the city before its gates are closed, and this international treasure is lost in a sea of burecracy. It is said the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and we need to not squeak, but to roar over the few “concerned citizens” trying to close the forest for good.

WHAT CAN YOU DO????

COME to The City Of Austin Music Task Force Meeting. This meeting is to deal with community concerns over live music and music venues. It is a opportune time for us to voice our dismay at the closing of The Forest and denying our right of assembly.

The meeting is Monday July 21st at 3708 Woodbury Dr.

WRITE A LETTER !!

To the Mayor of Austin, telling him how you feel about the closing of the Forest and what an asset The Forest is to the cultural life of Austin.

Can you FEEL it?!?! Get converted w/ Rev. Billy! (events » community) Tuesday, July 21, 2009 - 7:00 PM ave you heard?? Reverend Billy is running for Mayor of New York City, and he's coming to San Francisco to seek our support! I hope you'll join me at DNA Lounge on July 21, for a sermon and some outstanding entertainment.

Bill Talen, also known as Reverend Billy, is an activist and performer who has been defending neighborhoods and human scale communities around the world from overdevelopment, gentrification and the corrupting forces of consumerism for more than a decade.

In NYC democracy itself is under threat. Mayor Mike Bloomberg is spending 100 million dollars to win a third term, he has overthrown the term limit laws NYC voters twice upheld! We must stop the Billionaire King !

As Mayor of New York, Reverend Billy Talen will work to create a city that is sustainable, just and free; defending public space, self-determination, and the right for every New Yorker to earn an honest, independent living.

Billy is one of the most compelling public speakers I've ever seen, and his message is one that the world so desperately needs to hear: that we need to move beyond our consumer lifestyles and find fulfillment in our own ingenuity and sustainable living.
