How I see it

Top 10 roller coasters

   Sun, August 26, 2007 - 4:20 PM
On Friday, I saw a programme on Sky 3 listing the Top 10 roller coasters as voted for (presumably by viewers).
Interesting enough to watch, but I think the programme was perhaps a bit too US-biased (8 of the 10 were in the US).
Also, I think a lot of the votes were based on nostalgia rather than thrills. About half were old-fashioned wooden coasters, and I was surprised to see the Nemesis only made it to number 10.

So, what would my favourites be? Read on ...

1 - The Oblivion, Alton Towers. Vertical drop, really scary.

2 - Millennium / Jubilee coaster (both similar), Fantasy Island, Ingoldmells near Skegness. Only one down side - you have to pay for each ride, there's no wrist band system.

3 - Nemesis, Alton Towers

4 - Shockwave, Drayton Manor. Whether you prefer this or the Nemesis, I guess it depends whether you'd rather ride standing up or sitting down, lol

5 - G-Force, Drayton Manor. Didn't seem as big as the Shockwave, but what a speed!

6 - Pepsi Max / The Big One, Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Easily the best "traditional" roller coaster (up and down only, no loops) I've ever been on, seems as high as Blackpool Tower when you're on the top of the ride.

7 - The Missile, American Adventure. Steep (almost vertical drop) followed by a loop, then the same in reverse. Sadly no longer with us, neither is the American Adventure park. However, the Revolution at Blackpool Pleasure Beach is similar.

8 - Corkscrew, Alton Towers. This is my "nostalgia vote", first looping roller coaster I ever went on, back in 1982.

9 - Black Hole, Alton Towers. Fear was heightened by the fact the ride was in the dark, you couldn't see what was next. Sadly no longer operating, but Blackpool Pleasure Beach has a similar ride called the Space Invader 2.

10 - Log Flume, Alton Towers. Is a log flume a "roller coaster"? I think it is, but with water instead of wheels :-)

Well, that's my personal top 10 roller coasters, from my own experience/memories. There's plenty I haven't mentioned, if you know of any better ones in the UK, please let me know :-)
