My Funplex Review

Rating: 2.75 Beehives.

Pump: Good beat, fun song, nonsensical. Leave it up to the B’s to repeatedly use a random word like ‘Jellybone’ in a song as if everyone knew what it really was (is it anything like a Rock Lobster)? 3.5 Beehives.

Hot corner: My least favorite song. To many inane ‘Shake it shake it’, ‘shimmy shimmy’s’ and ‘hey baby’s I want you’. The song is lethargic. It’s as if they threw a bunch of meaningless pop babble words into refrigerator magnets and arbitrarily rearranged them to form lyrics for some of the songs. Also it sounds too similar to Mo Dean from the Good Stuff album. Lazy. 1.5 Beehives

Ultraviolet is along the same lines as Hot Corner. On top of that, I have no idea what they are talking about. Lyrics like “Here’s a cheese spot, pull the car over!!” Wait...what??? And “Have you tried it?…Ultraviolet!” Me thinks they should probably cut back on the Ultraviolet. 2 Beehives.

Juliet of the Spirits: The best song on the album and that’s not good because sounds the least like them. This is their best attempt at making an effort to updating their sound. It has a dancey, pumped-up synth disco beat, with Kate and Cindy doing Abba-esque vocals that strangely gives it a contemporary edge. It would fit in well on any indie radio station play list or hip bar/nightclub. 4.5 Beehives.

Funplex is most like a B’s classic ala the Cosmic Thing genre. The ironic lyrics combined with even older classic Kate and Cindy harmonies makes it a definite a keeper. It’s sure to become a mainstream classic with snarky lyrics like “I’m your daytime waitress at the Taco Tiki Hut, I’m your daytime waitress, here’s your stupid 7-Up”. 4.5 Beehives.

Eyes Wide Open: Predominantly a Fred song. It's another attempt to be more current with their sound, and it's good but not as successful as Juliet of the Spirits. Okay. 3 Beehives.

Love in the year 3000: New version of Song For a Future Generation? Not quite. Silly but not in a good way. More of the same formulaic nonsense: “Robot-bootie-bot-Erotobot.” Wtf? Again, time to back away from the Ultraviolet. 1.5 Beehives.

Deviant Ingredient: See Love in the Year 3000, but instead of lyrics about the future, they regress to their mystical hippy side. And you wish they hadn’t. An okay melody but the lyrics and strange voice play between the three takes away from being able to enjoy it, with the exception of Fred’s playful imitation of Prince…Owwwwah! 2.5 Beehives.

Too much to think about: More airy outterspace jargon and a formulaic driven beat. They could’ve dropped this track, it adds nothing to the album. 1 Beehive.

Dancing Now: The third strongest track off the album. Did they write this song for me? I think they did. The lyrics seem suit me all too well. A good beat and a great dance song that has a coherent and straightforward theme. I love it. 4 Beehives.

Keep This party going: Warning: Do NOT play this song at a party if you wanted to keep the party going. 1 Beehive.

Living....

I'd rather be ashes than dust.
I would rather my spirit go out in a burning flame than that it be stifled with dry rot.
I would rather be a splendid meteor, streaking across the sky, every atom in my being a magnificent glow, than to be a sleepy and permanent planet. For life is to be lived and not to just exist, and I will not waste my precious, precious days simply trying to prolong them.
I will use every moment of my time, and I will live every day to the fullest.- - - Jack London

Things that made me smile today….

I went to have my tires rotated today in The WC and was told it would take about 45 minutes. As I walked over towards the seating area I saw a stack of newspapers in a vacant chair adjacent to your typical WC couple. As I rifled through it all to find the Arts & Entertainment section the male half of the couple says to me, “Here are the Wanted Ads.” Without skipping a beat I responded, “Wow, is it that obvious?” He turned red, his wife jabbed him in the arm and scolded, “That was rude of you!” He sputtered, “No, no, I meant…I thought maybe…I just didn’t want to hoard the paper from the lady.” To taunt some more I added, “There’s a lot I want, unfortunately the Wants Ads aren’t going to help”. He apologized and stayed quiet for a while. The WC can be so amusing.

I do love the KALX for introducing me to new (to me) artists like they did today. They played an A Cappella cover of Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ sung by A Cappelle artist Petra Haden. It’s brilliant and the video makes me love it even more….www.youtube.com/watch
Then I checked out some of Petra’s other work and found her female A Cappella group, Petra Haden and The Sell Outs singing the Who’s ‘I Can See For Miles’. I like how animated Petra is, it looks like she has someone in mind while she’s singing:
www.youtube.com/watch

Jennie told me about Depeche Mode’s version of ‘Suffer Well’ for The Sims. They sing in Gibberish, so really the song should have been called, ‘Schoopie Quell’. Funny video:
www.youtube.com/watch

And this video is one of my all time favs ever since the late ‘80’s: www.youtube.com/watch

It has: 1) a good song, 2) cute, dancing English boys like “Julian” and, 3) Andy Warhol. See? All a girl needs and none of which can be found in the Want Ads.

Concert Survey

What the hell, I'm waiting for Project Runway to start.

Well not life changing but a memorable almost religious moment was The Cure’s Disintegration Tour when it started to rain as they played ‘Same Deep Water As You’ (if you recall, the song has rain and thunder sound effects in it).
