Hitchens Gets Waterboarded, Withdraws from Iraq in 11 Seconds
By John Dolan, AlterNet

Stop the presses! Christopher Hitchens just noticed that waterboarding is torture!

Hitchens announced the news like he'd brought it down from Mount Sinai, in a Vanity Fair article. "Believe me," he told a waiting nation, "it's torture." Well, yeah. It usually is, when it happens to you. When it happens to somebody... read more

Kovic stated in March of 2005 that," The scar will always be there, a living reminder of that war, but it has also become something beautiful now, something of faith and hope and love. Sweating It Out

Nike's Bad Air

By JEFFREY ST. CLAIR

This is an excerpt from Jeffrey St. Clair's new environmental history, Born Under a Bad Sky, now available from AK Press / CounterPunch Books.

The place is in Honduras, a so-called free-trade zone or maquiladora—little more than a ragged swath hacked out of the rainforest and ringed by a tall fence, tipped with razor-sharp wire. Inside a clump of factories produce cut-rate apparel for American companies. Armed guards, many of the... read more

I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately. -- George Carlin,

The last vote that George Carlin said he cast in a presidential race was for George McGovern in 1972.

When Richard Nixon, who Carlin described as a member of a sub-species of humanity, overwhelmingly defeated McGov... read more

about me
I have ended one journey, graduate school, and am on the verge of beginning a more expansive one. I officially graduated with my Ph.D. last June 15th. I have spent the last two decades learning to be kind to myself, to be myself openly and honestly, and taking responsibility. All the possibilities I realized but couldn't pursue, because I was finishing a doctoral program, are facing me with mystery. Which way to go? I've tried to resume reading from my large but recently neglected collection of books, but seem unable to finish books. I suppose finishing a dissertation has taken some umph from me. Within my now strained budget, I go to live concerts, watch movies (on video and DVD), and attend political events. In the Fall, I will begin studying digital media and dance — I thank Tenille and Anglique Kidjo for reminding me of my desire to study dance. I laxly considering volunteer opportunities and part–time jobs. For now I am focusing on publishing research papers and implementing my research to make the next step into work, if I can do this. I plan to resume weight training soon, hiking, perhaps take up meditation, establish a community of true friends, explore intimate relationships and my sexuality, travel, learn to dance, understand music and art history, finish decorating my apartment and outfit my front and back balconies with plants, flowers and trees, birdbaths and lanterns as my meager funds permit. In short, I am crossing through the doorway, beginning exploration with a capital E — beginnings are so wonderful (and scary)!
