about me
I am half of the Oakland based duo, Raks Africa. We enjoy challenging what bellydancers are supposed to look like. I have been bellydancing since 2003. Our style is a mix of American Cabaret, Tunisian and Moroccan dance. We've performed at baby showers, as well as major venues like the Femme Conference, Desert Dance Festival and Cafe Bellie. As members of the Bellydancers of Color Association, we are proud to be a part of a long tradition of embracing our femininity, culture and power through Raks Sharki…..Bellydance!

OK. Enough for procrastination. It's time to get cracking on grants for a bellydance youth camp that my BD partner and I are launching.

Re: Is this a dead tribe?
(in Belly Dance Video Clips)
I think that they all are in the process of dying. Since the last major outage, I've noticed that all of the tribes that used to be pretty active have slowed greatly. I think people are taking their attention elsewhere.

Michael Jackson’s made his mark on the world, body and soul. But what we must not forget is that world marked Jackson as well. In his last days, assimilation and denial were sadly written all over his face. In death, I pray that peace finally finds the music man.

Actually it was a two-for with a Sax Taxim from Guy Schalom. I chose a George Abdo version of Misirlou, which I believe is the first version that I have heard and made me fall in love with the tune. I turned it into a very traditional veil piece with a double circle entrance. OK it wasn't a perfect performance, but it did feel good and flowy. A big thanks goes... read more

By good friend and boss, Rinku Sen has just published a dynamic book called The Accidental American, and she's making several stops here in the Bay Area to talk about it. Next week Tuesday she will be at Walden Pond Books (3316 Grand Ave, Oakland) at 7pm, and then again the following Tuesday 9/30, at Modern Times (888 Valencia St, San Francisc... read more
Today I tried something new. I was trying to figure out what I was going to do with myself on a Saturday evening and feeling a bit scattered. I didn't want to do one of my 101 chores and wasn't quite hungry enough for dinner. So I flipped on my ipod and decided to finally tackle a new bellydance solo that's been chasing around my head.
