"If I had influence with the good fairy who is supposed to preside over the christening of all children, I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life." Rachel Carson
National Women’s History Project honored Rachel Carson as part of women’s history month in March. She was honored as one of the women who took the lead to save our planet. Parallel to her recognition a documentary style film depicting her life long journey, A Sense of Wonder was released. This film will be shown as part of a 100 city tour in Sheboygan, WI at the Paradigm Café 1022 Michigan Ave Sheboygan, WI 53081 on May 18, 2009 at 7pm. The café will be open at 6pm for refreshments and food prior to the screening.
In This film A Sense of Wonder, using many of Miss Carson's own words, Kaiulani Lee embodies this extraordinary woman in a documentary style film, which depicts Carson in the final year of her life. Struggling with cancer, Carson recounts with both humor and anger the attacks by the chemical industry, the government, and the press as she focuses her limited energy to get her message to Congress and the American people. The film is an intimate and poignant reflection of Carson's life as she emerges as America's most successful advocate for the natural world. A Sense of Wonder was shot in HD by Oscar-winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler at Carson's cottage on the coast of Maine.
An important figure in our modern history: Who was Rachel Carson
Rachel Carson has been called the "patron saint" of the modern environmental movement. The Atlantic has listed her as one of the 40 most influential figures in American history. Praising Carson and her work, Al Gore wrote that, “without [Silent Spring by Rachel Carson], the environmental movement might have been long delayed or never developed at all.” As a scientist, a writer, and a woman, Rachel Carson has inspired generations. As an activist she fought governmental negligence and unbridled corporate interest. Through her scientific integrity and elegant prose she became one of the 20th centuries most prescient scientific authors. And as an individual she battled economic adversity, family tragedy, and gender stereotyping. Carson reminds us that we each have not only the ability to make a creative difference in this world—we have the responsibility to do so.
When pioneering environmentalist Rachel Carson published Silent Spring in 1962, the backlash from her critics thrust her into the center of a political maelstrom. Despite her love of privacy, Carson’s convictions and her foresight regarding the risks posed by chemical pesticides forced her into a very public and controversial role.

3rd Annual Women's Herbal
Earthways Residential Apprenticeship Program
Coon Valley, WI
July 8-29, 2009
Join us for this remembering- as we are invited to discover the meaning of the term Be-Wilder as it is defined by feminist author Mary Daly. She defines this term as to "lead the self and others on pixie-paths that wind deeper into the unknown; to hear and follow the call of the wild"
This residential apprenticeship is a unique opportunity for women to hear the call of the wild. We will connect deeply with ourselves and develop a connection with herbal green allies. Participants will have the opportunity to experience living close to the earth while incorporating herbs and wild foods into their daily life. We will create a community of women that encourage, inspire and challenge each other to look to the mother earth and plant sisters for deep healing and wisdom. This program is an authentic apprenticeship where participants are offered support on their own personal journey and encouraged, supported and challenged to journey to their depths.
We will connect with the wise woman within while hiking, kayaking, dancing, harvesting, creating community, crafting traditional foods and medicines, practicing compassionate communication, sitting in talking stick ceremony, exploring nature awareness and learning a wide variety of skills including but not limited to cordage making, basket weaving, attunement etc.

I posted this on the herbal wisdom tribe and thought I would include it here as well.
If this is true and I do believe it is, then how do we make sound decisions for our health? The question I like to ask, is how do I want to get there? What process do I want to go through in order to thrive? Thriving requires a journey and I know personally that I am most interested in nourishing myself and those around me. So my bottom line question no matter what other modalities I enlist is where is t...

Relocation for mysef as a bioregional herbalist (one who chooses to incorporate the plants that grow nearby) has proven to be an opportunity to connect with new plants on a more intimate level. 5 years ago I moved from the Pacific Northwest to the Midwest.
One of those plants is Monarda fistulosa, commonly known as Bee Balm or wild bergomot. While I grew Monarda didyma in my garden while living in Seattle, I did not harvest very much, as there were only a few plants. I occasionally harve...

I have been watching and studying the information about the flu virus that started in Mexico and is affecting people around the world. I wanted to offer suggestions around prevention as well as care. Prevention is the best first course of action, followed by appropriate treatment. Prevention in my mind includes, not panicking, gathering information, following the safe practices offered by the CDC (listed below) and knowing what plants grow around you that you can use to combat this flu if it ...

I posted the below entry on the Herbal Wisdom Tribe, but also wanted to post it here:
I spent most of the day at our local ecology center, it was their 23rd annual flap jack days. Pancake breakfast with REAL maple syrup and tours of the sugar bush or maple grove. Fun day..good music and a wonderful turn out. The sap is flowing nicely and some of the containers on the trees we tapped were almost overflowing when we got to them for collection!
Went for a walk and found the first skunk c...
