Video: Kleenex Gets Punk'd by Greenpeace!

<div>Greenpeace recently had some fun in NYC, at Kimberly-Clark's expense: Check out the funny video of the action!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZCym0DB7hA

Kleenex is destroying the ancient forests of North America. Its manufacturer, Kimberly-Clark, the largest tissue company in the world, is clearcutting the North American Boreal forest to manufacture products that are used once and then flushed down the toilet. Representing 25 per cent of the world’s remaining intact forests, the Boreal is an important buffer against global warming. But to Kimberly-Clark, it’s disposable.

K-C was in Times Square on the 24th, filming interviews for their "Let It Out" Kleenex ad campaign. In this series of advertisements, folks are recruited off the street to sit on a blue couch and share personal stories that make them cry into Kleenex tissues.

We sent in three undercover Greenpeace activists with hidden mics to infiltrate their interviews and talk about what makes us unhappy: wiping out ancient forests for disposable tissue products. While one activist was being filmed on the Kleenex couch, folks in Kleercut t-shirts appeared out of nowhere and unfurled a banner behind the couch, making a sweet Kleercut campaign commercial…

The Kleenex team was caught off guard. They stopped the film shoot and for the rest of the day Greenpeace distributed information and communicated with New Yorkers about K-C’s forest crimes. We effectively shut down a multi-million dollar ad campaign, and K-C execs looked none too pleased in their suits and their scowls.

Very kind of Kleenex to go to such lengths to set the stage for our own campaign commercial. Big ups to the NYC crew.

Check out the video, and please favorite it and leave a good comment!

Peace,

Breaking News -- Fire on whaling ship, Greenpeace offers help

<div>Friends,

Onboard the Greenpeace ship Esperanza in the Southern Ocean - campaigning against an illegal whaling hunt- we find ourselves in an unexpected situation. The vessel we had been searching for - the Japanese factory whaling ship Nisshin Maru - issued a distress call after a serious fire broke out on board. The blaze is thought to be under control, but tragically, one crew member has been lost.

The Nisshin Maru is now disabled and carries approximately 1,000 tons of oil and sits 100 nautical miles from the largest Adelie penguin colony in the world. An oil spill or chemical leak would be a major ecological disaster in the Antarctic, and there may be bad weather soon.

To help avoid further tragedy, Greenpeace has offered our ship, the Esperanza, to tow the whaling ship out of the Southern Ocean. We'll keep you posted as the situation unfolds.

The whale hunt is most likely over for the season, but the whales still face a serious threat. The government of Japan has been lobbying hard to overturn the 20 year old ban on commercial whaling, and this May the International Whaling Commission is meeting in Alaska for a vote. &amp;lt;b> Now, more than we need YOU to defend the whales.

-->> You don’t have to be on the ship in the Southern Oceans to help save whales!

Whales are an important and irreplaceable part of our ocean environment. Their intelligence, grace and beauty make them ambassadors of our increasingly endangered seas. In the 1980s, however, whales of many species were being driven to the brink of extinction by rampant and uncontrolled commercial whaling. The moratorium on commercial whaling was a great victory for ocean wildlife. But the whales need us now more than ever. From now until the International Whaling Commission's vote in May, whale defenders must take action to prevent the resumption of commercial whaling.

Become a part of the online whale defender community today, and play a role in saving the whales once and for all. I'll look for you on the US Whale Defender's

After 17 years, Iceland has officially resumed commercial whaling. The first kill was made on Saturday: an endangered Fin whale.

Norway used to be the only country openly conducting commercial whaling. Japan currently conducts a large yearly hunt using the pretence of "scientific whaling" to keep its industry alive. Since 2003, Iceland has also engaged in so called "scientific whaling".

The Icelandic Fisheries Ministry has now issued a permit to hunt 39 whales for commercial purposes. Nine of these are endangered fin whales - proving claims that the hunt is sustainable are not true. An old Icelandic whale processing factory is also reportedly being put back into service.

The whaling permit should be revoked before any more whales are killed!

"The fact that the first kill was an endangered whale makes a nonsense of claims that the hunt is sustainable," says our campaigner John Frizell. "Iceland has no market for whale meat internationally and almost none domestically. This hunt is no more than pointless posturing, which achieves nothing except the further depletion of an endangered species," he added.

In addition to the Iceland hunt, next month the Japanese whaling fleet will sail to Southern Ocean, with plans to kill nearly 1,000 whales - including endangered Fin whales. Japan has announced plans to begin hunting humpbacks in future as well.

How You Can Help Stop Whaling In Iceland

Iceland is a stunning, pristine land that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year, many of them to go whale watching in the clear arctic waters. Would you seriously consider taking a vacation in Iceland rather than somewhere else if the Government of Iceland stopped whaling?

<div>Hello Friends…

Scientists from NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) have announced measurements showing Arctic sea ice is hitting major lows. (http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/news/nasa-findings-on-global-warmin)

This past summer, Greenpeace explorers succeeded in making the first summer trek to the North Pole to document the impacts of global warming firsthand and to call attention to the plight of the polar bear. As part of the expedition, the explorers also collected data on ice thickness, snow cover and snow density and took snow samples for scientists at NSIDC.

NSIDC’s satellite data analysis shows that Arctic perennial sea ice, which remains all year-round, has shrunk by 14 percent between 2004 and 2005. These changes in Arctic sea ice are being linked to global warming and changes in wind patterns. The overall decrease in winter Arctic perennial sea ice totals 280,000 square miles - an area that is the size of Texas!

The good news is, scientists say we can avoid the worst if we act now. That's why Greenpeace is putting Congressional candidates in the hotseat. Find out more about how you can get involved http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/houseparty/?&amp;ref_source=bloghotparty.

Greenpeace has released a report card grading technology companies on their environmental responsibility. There are two simple criteria: Toxic chemicals in the companies' products, and recycling and takeback programs. None of the companies scored particularly well, and you may be surprised to learn who earned bottom positions.

It doesn't make sense. What would make sense is for Congress to make a real energy plan, one that would invest in clean, renewable energy and more fuel efficient cars. This would help address global warming and it would help every American. What Congress is doing now is helping a few big executives.

<div>Hey There...

We'd like to ask your help in defending our oceans from the destruction of bottom trawling. Have you heard about this? Bottom trawling is about the most wasteful fishing practice around. Corporate ships are dragging huge nets (2 tons+) along the bottom of the ocean, catching a few fish and destroying everything else in their path. These guys are destroying deep sea ecosystems and almost surely extinguishing whole species before they are even discovered.

1,500 square kilometers of ocean floor are bottom trawled every day, and the governments of the world are not stepping up to deal with it. The Secretary General of the UN just said the international response has been “woefully" inadequate. So... We the people must be heard! Want to save deep sea life? Please take action and let our government know we want bottom trawling stopped now! Here's the link:

<div>Here's some good news for ya!

http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/news/mcvictory
McDonald's just announced they will no longer sell chicken fed on soy grown in recently deforested Amazon, and the soy traders burning down the Amazon have no choice but to listen...

As a result of our exposing McDonald's' role in rainforest destruction, they've been working with us to develop a zero deforestation plan. The big soy traders (some of these guys are complicit in slave labor farms- nice guys, huh?) were forced to the negotiating table, and have committed to a limited two year ban on buying soy from deforested areas. This is an important step, and Greenpeace is demanding that the ban hold, basically until a long term protection plan for the Amazon is in place.

But Kentucky Fried Chicken still won't play ball, so if you haven't done this action yet, now's the time to let KFC know how you feel about the rainforest... http://members.greenpeace.org/action/start/108/?&amp;ref_source=tribekfc</div>

<div>In the chilly waters of the Bering Sea, the stretch of ocean between Alaska and Russia, Greenpeace campaigners are exploring the rich marine environment and documenting the impacts of one of the worlds most productive fisheries. More than half of the fish we eat in the US come from this fragile ecosystem, home to whales, walruses, sea lions, polar bears, and millions of seabirds.

One cause for concern is that this tremendous fishery operates with little oversight and few constraints, always a recipe for disaster.

Crewmembers have been keeping a blog ( http://members.greenpeace.org/blog/staff_oceans ), reporting their findings and sharing with us the severe beauty of the Bering Sea. We've also set up wildlife fact sheets at the bottom of our Bering Sea page where you can learn more about the animals that brave the icy sea: http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/campaigns/oceans/beringsea</div>

Coast Guard Bill Passes, Cape Wind Moves Forward!

<div>I'm pleased to say that we have scored a huge victory in the fight for Cape Wind. On June 21st, Senate leaders reached a deal with Senators Kennedy (D-MA) and Stevens (R-AK) to remove from the coast guard bill the amendment that would have allowed the Massachusetts governor to veto the wind farm's development for any reason. As a result, plans to build the first offshore wind farm in the country can continue.

For a while it looked like America’s first offshore wind project might be dead in the water. But thanks to a massive public outcry, some of the project’s most powerful Congressional opponents have figured out which way the political winds are blowing.

The bill passed this afternoon with a vote of 413 to 0.

This is a positive step forward, but we won’t declare victory until we have Cape Wind producing clean energy for Massachusetts.

This offshore wind project, located in Nantucket Sound, will provide 75 percent of Cape Cod’s energy needs with clean and safe wind power. As America’s first offshore wind project, Cape Wind will set an important precedent in the fight to turn the tide of global warming. We hope you will join us in supporting these projects – say “Yes to Wind!”

Greenpeace activists stormed the beaches of St Kitts, site of the International Whaling Commission meetings, on Monday to set up a whale graveyard with 866 whale tail gravestones, one for each whale killed by the Japanese fleets this year. The police arrived quickly and arrested 10 of the activists. However, their point was made: the slaughter has continued and things are not looking good for the whales.

The good news is that many of Japan's measures, including one to eliminate protection for dolphins, porpoises, and small whales, were shot down, though by a narrow margin: just two votes! However, these votes were overshadowed when another pro-whaling nation joined Japan's camp to pass a non-binding resolution declaring whales guilty of over-fishing (as unbelievable as it sounds).

It seems Japan has gained momentum, and will threaten to take over the talks in the future. Please take action and write the State Department to ask them to take a leading role in saving the whales: http://usactions.greenpeace.org/action/start.php?action_id=106&amp;ref_source=tribekitts

Another Arctic Update

<div>Below is an update from Lonnie up in the Arctic!
***************************
https://secureusa.greenpeace.org/securedonate/?from=thin_ice
It’s 11:00 at night here in the Arctic, but it’s still light outside our tent. Since Eric wrote to you almost a month ago, we’ve traveled 225 miles, and we’re just a few miles away from 87 degrees North, where we’re expecting our first food and supply drop. We’ve received more than $7,500 in total so far, enough to cover the cost of our food and gear, and I can’t thank you enough for your generosity. But we’re expecting our first supply drop any day now, and we still need another $45,000 to cover the costs. Will you help us get halfway to our goal?

Let me tell you, a growing boy can really build up an appetite out here! We’re hauling 200 pounds an average of 9 miles every day, and I’m starting to daydream about the fresh supplies we’ll be receiving – enough for the next 80 days. I’m not sure what I’m looking forward to more – a chocolate treat from home or a few clean pairs of underwear and socks.

But obviously, chocolate has nothing to do with why we came here and what’s really driving us forward. And we’re not the only ones feeling hungry. If global warming continues to increase, polar bears will find themselves increasingly isolated from their food, and starvation will become a serious threat.

I wanted to share this video with you to show you how dire the situation could become for polar bear: http://www.projectthinice.org/you/donate.php
The poor bear in the video was filmed by the crew of the Greenpeace ship, the Arctic Sunrise, and almost surely drowned shortly after being filmed. It is a sad story that could become more common up here, and I hope you feel as strongly as we do that it has to stop.

Won’t you please help us save the polar bear?

The situation here in the Arctic is just one of the many problems caused by global warming. If Eric and I can’t get the world to focus attention on this urgent issue now, it may be too late for the polar bear.

Please, support our efforts here in the Arctic, and tell your friends to spread the word. We’re doing everything we can do to save the polar bear. Won’t you? https://secureusa.greenpeace.org/securedonate/?from=thin_ice

>From the top of the World,

A Return of Commercial Whaling?

<div>http://members.greenpeace.org/action/start/103/?&amp;ref_source=tribewhaleaction

Japan has spent years buying votes from developing nations on the International Whaling Commission to reopen commercial whaling, and they may finally have the votes they need to win the majority.

If Japan finally succeeds, it will turn back the clock twenty years, and threaten the stability of many whale populations.

A few small nations could be the key to the whales’ future. Please use this link to send a message to the governments of Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, and the Marshall Islands urging them to vote with the whales, not the whalers, at the upcoming IWC meeting: http://members.greenpeace.org/action/start/103/?&amp;ref_source=tribewhaleaction</div>

URGENT: Big Oil vs. Wind Energy in Congress

    </a>
<div>We've seen the political influence of big oil before, and even drawn a connection between financial contributions and congressional voting records - before anyone had heard of Jack Abramoff. But this takes the cake.

Congress is actively killing America's first offshore wind farm, and only YOU can stop them: http://usactions.greenpeace.org/action/start.php?action_id=97&amp;ref_source=tribesavecapewind

Even President Bush has admitted that our nation is addicted to oil and we need alternative energy. But Congress can't seem to get enough of the oil drug, or at least the financial contributions from the oil industry. Oil industry lobbyists negotiated an 11th hour back boardroom deal that could kill Cape Wind forever.

Congress comes back to Washington in two weeks, and I hope they'll return to find a mountain of angry emails, faxes and phone messages.

Take Action! Tell Congress not to block the future of wind energy: http://usactions.greenpeace.org/action/start.php?action_id=97&amp;ref_source=tribesavecapewind

This is just the start. We've been working to make Cape Wind a reality for more than two years, and we can't give up now. As soon as Congress comes back, you'll be hearing from us again, and I hope you'll be ready to act quickly.

<div>MAKE AN IMPACT WITH ONE PHONE CALL!

Today students from more than 130 campuses across the country and Canada are holding events to kick Kimberly-Clark out of the bathroom. Maker of Kleenex, Scott, and Cottonelle, K-C uses no recycled paper and wipes away more than 3 million tons of ancient forest each year! Student activists will be calling K-C to tell them that Kleercuts Stink. JOIN THEM BY MAKING A QUICK CALL! Just call K-C Customer Service at 1-800-544-1847 (you’ll have to stay on the line to talk to a person, don’t press one even if you’re using a touch-tone phone).

Once you get a representative on the line, tell them to stop wiping away ancient forests! Add that you won’t buy any Kimberly-Clark products until they stop sourcing old-growth and start increasing their use of recycled paper (you won’t, will you?). Once you’ve made the call, send me a message or send an email to usa@kleercut.net to tell me you’ve done it (we want to know how many calls are made!). If you want some more background on the campaign and K-C, check out our Kleercut site: http://www.kleercut.net

Help make a huge stink today, April 5th, and put an end to ancient forest destruction!

Thanks,

Victory for the Whales!

<div> We have the best news of the year to share with you: The Gorton’s fisherman and his Japanese parent company have agreed to get out of whaling. That’s right, thanks to you, we’ve proven that whaling is bad for business.

After years of targeting the governments involved in whaling, this year we launched a new campaign to target corporate involvement in whale slaughter, including Gorton’s of Gloucester right here in the U.S.

More than 25,000 of you wrote to Gorton’s, sent postcards, attended whale watching parties, folded origami whales, and made generous contributions, all to send Gorton’s a clear message: Get out of the whale killing business. Well, in less than 4 short months, you’ve managed to get the largest corporate shareholder in commercial whaling to agree to get out of the whaling business altogether.

And that’s not all… the rest of the corporate shareholders in the Japanese whaling fleet have also decided to divest their shares of the business rather than face your wrath. This doesn’t mean an end to so-called “scientific” whaling, but it does mean that public pressure is gaining momentum and forcing corporations to jump ship.

This is the most important victory since commercial whaling was officially banned in 1986. You have so much to be proud of. But the fight is far from over, and now we’re gearing up for what could be the greatest threat yet.

The next meeting of the International Whaling Commission will be taking place in June, and Japan is threatening to win the majority vote and overturn the commercial whaling moratorium. For years, the Japanese government has spent billions of Yen buying votes on the commission, and this year could be the critical year that they manage to turn the tide. Our own government will have a critical role to play, and we expect a lot more from them than we’ve seen lately if we’re going to prevent this from happening. So stay tuned for the next round.

Many Thanks to You

This is a tremendous step toward an end to whaling, and we couldn’t have accomplished it without the thousands of supporters who took the time to make a difference. Thank you.

The fight to protect whales is far from over though, so please keep fighting along with us.

<div>Take Action: http://members.greenpeace.org/action/start.php?action_id=95&amp;ref_source=tribekillzone

Last time I checked, Pres. Bush and the Republicans claimed to be strong on national security. Even if they messed up some other things like human rights, the environment, and the economy, gosh darn it, they protected us. That's why we kept them in power, right? Well it looks like they've screwed this up as well.

There are more than 100 chemical plants around the country that could kill or injure millions in the event of an accident or attack. Yet in this "new, post 9-11" world, Bush and the Republicans have done nothing to make us any safer from potential disaster.

Along with installing stronger security, the chemical industry could substitute deadly chemicals such as chlorine with other, less toxic substitutes. But the Administration would rather stay on good terms with their industry donors than protect the American people. In fact, Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff just endorsed the chemical industry's legislative agenda - or lack of one - on chemical security.

Congress has the chance to stand up for the American people, for our safety and our environment, and address the threat posed by deadly chemicals.

<div>Did you think the Oil industry and their friends in Congress would give up on their plan to drill in the Arctic Refuge? Think again.
There is an effort in Congress to designate funds from the drilling to Gulf Coast Restoration! By linking it to the budget, advocates have once again tried to sneak an unpopular measure through the legislative process.

Lucky for the caribou, we haven't given up either. The battle is far from over and the vote will be close, so make sure to take action and send a message to your Rep. telling them to VOTE NO: http://members.greenpeace.org/action/start.php?action_id=90&amp;ref_source=tribeanwr

Canada Announces Massive Seal Hunt

Who would want to hurt this?

Apparently the Canadian government would, and they have announced they will reopen the seal hunt this year. Around one million pups have been killed over the past three years, and now the killing will continue. Take Action: Tell the Canadian Prime Minister to call off the hunt! Take action here: http://members.greenpeace.org/action/start.php?action_id=89&amp;ref_source=tribeseals

This all assumes the sea ice doesn't melt. Canada almost cancelled the hunt due to thin ice, though there wouldn't be much of a hunt without the ice: not only would the hunters not be able to stalk, the prey wouldn't be around anyway. With sea ice melting rapidly as a result of global warming, you can add the seals to the list of animals threatened by our reckless fossil fuel abuse (see my earlier post on polar bears and global warming). So why would you decide to slaughter a helpless animal already facing such a threat?</div>

Oceans in Trouble, Hope in Congress?

    </a>
<div>You see that picture of me, gracefully flipping out of the deep? I'm jumping for joy at the possibility that Congress might finally wake up and fix our oceans policy!

Currently, it is the fishing industry that guides this policy: an obvious conflict of interest. This policy has contributed to the precipitous decline of the health of our oceans, my home! We should be putting long-term health and an understanding of the ecosystem as a whole in front of short term profits. A few members of Congress have introduced a bill that would do just that. Tell your Representative to hop aboard! Take Action here: http://members.greenpeace.org/action/start.php?action_id=88&amp;ref_source=tribeoceanvote</div>

The Olympics are over, but one last Olympic-sized medal was handed out today in Knoxville. 75 student activists showed up at Kimberly-Clark's U.S. Administrative Headquarters to deliver a giant trophy filled with 10,000 petitions commemorating Kleenex as the #1 Forest Destroyer. Congratulations Kleenex: you have excelled in your sport, clearcutting ancient forests like no other!

The activists dressed up as athletes and conducted a mock awards ceremony, with Kleenex grabbing the gold and Scott and Cottonelle close behind. K-C employees drifted by while students called corporate executives to congratulate them on their company's victory. Speeches peppered the ceremony, detailing K-C's destruction of the forest and the many lives it supports.

It was a grand day not only for Kimberly-Clark, but for the entire sport of clearcutting. The company had sponsored the US Olympic team in Turin, Italy. We figured it was only fair that they be included in the festivities.
