about me
I'm a private Bay Area tutor in math, science, writing and SAT preparation. I'm available in San Francisco, the North Bay and the East bay. Find out more at www.achievewitheasetutoring.com

I'm also a singer-songwriter with two CD's out and a band called Crooked Roads, which answers the musical question, "What if Hank Williams grew up listening to The Beatles?" We'd be loosely categorized as alt. country. You can find out more about us at the website for our new CD "Heartbreak Sampler," at www.heartbreaksampler.com.

My Blog

Andy tore it up on violin last night. The rest of us sounded pretty good too. We appreciated The Pinch Dogs' crowd sticking around for our set.

I know top ten lists are dumb--especially when it comes to songs--but they're kinda fun too. I came up with a 9-song top ten list a few weeks ago and you'll be thrilled to know I've come up with the missing tenth song: "Don't Let Me Down," by The Beatles (but written entirely by Lennon). Deirdre Walsh at Highbias.com has just reviewed Heartbreak Sampler. (Read it at highbias.com/reviews/200...rookedRoads) (The CD also got an outstanding review from Americana-UK.com--see previous blog entry)

She called it "Americana music for the white collar man," which bothered me at first but which also gets at something true about the music, I think.

The phrase suggested inauthenticity to me at first. The terms "Americana" and "white collar" aren't supposed to... read more

Americana-uk wrote a great review of Heartbreak Sampler on Mar. 24 with the headline "Superlative lyrical angst and heartbreak."

It was really gratifying to feel that what I was trying to do on the CD came across.

I've been thinking about what I'm doing on this planet--what I'm good for. What are songs good for? Why would I write another song? Do my songs have to be uplifting and inspire people in order to be valuable?

And what came to me were words from Jesus. Specifically from Mark 4:21: "Surely the lamp is not brought in so as to be set under a basket or under the bed rather than to be set on a stand..." And then I thought of his words in Mathew 7 when he talks about distinguishing false prophet... read more
